Andrei Arlovski to Train With Greg Jackson
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
Loretta Hunt at Sherdog is reporting that Andrei Arlovski will join Greg Jackson's team for a 10-day training camp in the next few weeks:
Jackson said Arlovski is likely to clock in gym time with UFC regulars Keith Jardine and former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans, as well as heavyweights like "The Ultimate Fighter 10" participants Brendan Schaub and James McSweeney.
"We’re super excited having an athlete as high-level as Andrei coming down to work with us," said Jackson. "We’re hoping that we can help each other out and make it a situation that’s mutually beneficial. Everybody’s really excited about having him come work with the team."
Arlovski will apparently be bringing his main coach and BJJ instructor, Dino Costeas, with him to New Mexico, and the training will only be limited to ten days as the report says, but it's great news for Arlovski fans to see Andrei really re-dedicating himself to MMA and trying to pick up a few tricks from "Yoda" himself.
The Pitbull has never been associated with an elite team or camp, mostly choosing to bring in his own training partners and instructors (like Costeas) under the "Team Pitbull" moniker in his hometown of Chicago. Things were looking up when Arlovski began training with renowned boxing coach Freddie Roach prior to his fight with Fedor Emelianenko, but after two consecutive losses, it's unclear if he continues to train with Roach.
Regardless, Arlovski might be encouraged to join Jackson on a more full-time basis, depending on the success of the 10-day camp. It certainly seems to have worked for recent Team Jackson converts like Joe Stevenson and Brian Stann.

I have always been an Andrei supporter, and wish nothing but well for him, but the matter of the fact is, no matter how great his boxing, footwork, power is, there is no trainer, sparring partner in the world that can help his jaw.

that chin stuff is nonsense
ANYONE would’ve been knocked out by those shots.

I'm not POSITIVE that it's nonsense...
but there’s no way to know until he gets hit with a wide looping left hook by Shogun. But seriously, some people think that a guy getting dropped by a sledgehammer right on the button, while they’re moving forward, just has “no chin”. Wand hasn’t exactly been knocked out by weak shots either. Cro Cop, perfect shots from Dan and Rampage. Jury is still out on Andrei and Wand IMO, but honestly one more bad knockout for either, and they should quit.

I agree and
yet I don’t. You’re right in that anyone who gets hit on the button, while moving forward is going out. That said, I don’t know that Andrei has ever (in his KO losses) not been hit with one of those type of shots. I think most of it stems from bad head movement (not that I’m an expert on the subject) and poor defense once hew gets hit. I hope he soaks in all the knowledge Jackson has to give. It would be nice to see him return to the UFC and drop to 205, but I don’t suspect that is a real option for him, reason being there is NO way he can compete with Brock or any of the other heavy weights of that size.

Sure, I’m not saying he doesn’t have a problem, I just don’t think we know it’s his ability to take a punch. It’s his ability to NOT take punches that seems the obvious issue. I’m not an expert either, but he just seems too tight and too predictible. Maybe his chin does suck, it’s just that “bad chin” is used all the time as though there’s some information in that statement. And yeah, I can’t see him dropping to 205 or being competitive in the UFC again at heavyweight, but as Trigg, Coleman and Tito have shown us, you can never be sure…

agreed
with AMADEUS regardless of what bobthewriter thinks. some fans fail to realize what a true “glassjaw” is. some fans think gsp has weak chin or a “glassjaw” even though he has only lost once by tko(he actuall tapped out) and he didn’t get hit on the chin or the jaw, it was a behind the ear shot. some fans also fail to realize that arlovski is a HEAVYWEIGHT who wears 8oz gloves, and sometimes is a risk taker. when he decides to fight cautiously his chin holds up just fine
close dec loss to sylvia in their 3rd fight
close dec win in the werdum fight.
but when he fights like this, he gets trounced by the fans. i grew up watching boxing and became a fan of mma through that sport and the term “glassjaw” was reseved for fighter that would get knocked out with any old punch, hell even a stiff jab could ko bruce seldon. wladimir klitstchko was considered to have a suspect chin when he got koed or knocked down by fighters that were deemed lesser than him (corrie sanders and lamon brewster come to mind), but alot of that had to do with his immobility and the punching power of those said fighters. he has since worked on those weaknesses and hasn’t lost in a long time. i dont see andrei or jardine gettin koed with weak punches. they have been stright up bombs to heavy hitters and both fighters seemed to hold their chin up and move straight back, or just plain freeze up. i’m not going to try and say that a.a. or jardine or forrest griffen don’t have suspect chins, but the term glassjaw is thrown around a little too loosley in mma imo.

honing up hid defense and head movement would go along way to helping support his suspect chin.
by bdw on Oct 9, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Arlovski’s chin is not “suspect”.
It’s not a “person of interest”.
It’s not simply being “called in for questioning”.

Is this a Sherdog thread?
Because this thread is feeling like the Andrei Arlovski memorial nut hug chat room.
He’s a beautiful technician but when he gets ding-ed he goes to sleep.
Neither joining a new gym, nor dropping to flyweight, nor going on TUF, nor any other sports-marketing technique is going to change that.

Yes but Jackson can help him avoid getting hit there.

Can he? It really has not worked well for Keith Jardine.
by "Mr. NC-17" on Oct 9, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Roach didn’t help him with his defense I doubt that Jackson will do any better. On the other hand, I’ve always thought that AA fights in a stupid way, making silly decisions/mistakes, so maybe Jackson could change his mind a little bit to help him (but then again, Jardine spoils it all, haha)

REC'D
because he does have a bad chin, regardless of what amadeus thinks.
couple that with horrendous defensive skills and little to no head movement, and that’s Arlovski.
Jackson’s camp can work on the defense and head movement, but nobody’s gonna be able to fix that chin.

He has went on the record stating that he needs to give his body a break and let his head heal. Pit Bull recognizes his chin is weak.
Spinning out solid gold, like Rumpelstiltskin.

nope
he might have said he needed to give his body a rest but but he never “recognized” that his chin is weak. he was actually pretty upset that everyone was saying that. this was on a video chat on his website….where do you claim that he went “on record”?

X-Couture, Jackson’s MMA
ATT, AKA, Miletich
sityodtong
arizona combat sports
Black House isn’t a Full-fledged Camp with a Coach and a TON of fighters like these other ones are in my mind. Besides that, their are four levels of MMA camps. What am I forgetting?
by joseph. on Oct 9, 2009 3:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
There are a lot of smaller camps that get one or two fighters to the big time shows. TLI, Duke Roofus, ect. But you forgot a big one, Quest.
by szucconi on Oct 9, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
HIT Squad's
growing pretty steadily as well.
I would also put Miletich down on the third level or even fourth level these days. What notable fighters still train with Pat, and how much success have the ones that do train there had lately?
by Scott Haber on Oct 9, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cesar Gracie (Diaz brothers), Golden Glory (Overeem), Red Devil (Fedor), Wolfslair (Rampage), Tristar Gym (GSP/Denis Kang), Wand Fight Team (Demian Maia), Team Alpha Male (Faber). There are many other fighters in those camps, but I just named the fighters that would stand out.

Wand is very new and there is a lot of crossover in vegas. Which brings up another one, Cobra Kai. Chute Boxe, is that still around enough to be a major camp? Renzo Gracie out of NY. Hammer House. Serra’s gym. Is Jesus is Lord still around? BJ’s team in HI trains a lot of guys. Team Aggression. KenFlo split with sityodtong and now runs his own gym, but he trains a lot of places and does some conditioning with GSP and his conditioning coach.
by szucconi on Oct 9, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Hammer House disbanded. Not sure when, but I think it was a bit after PRIDE busted.
Team Quest is becoming increasingly irrelevant IMO. Their marquee fighters all have such phenomenal wrestling backgrounds that I have to think they’d have been successful just about anywhere, but more successful just about anywhere else. I feel like they’re sort of Hammer House 2.0, with a lot of boxer/wrestlers who don’t really seem to train a lot of BJJ.

in an interview with either CagePotato or TheFightNerd, that Hammer House gym is just a punching bag on Coleman’s porch lol…and Randleman stole the bag, so I guess they did disband. He was joking, I know..

ten day camp?
this isn’t him scrambling to get ready for a fight, is it? hope not. wanna see him get back on track, but do it patiently.

I think Jardine’s chin is suspect as well and I don’t think Jackson has helped him after being together for years. If you don’t believe in suspect chins and more of a matter of getting caught on the button then Jackson hasn’t been doing a good job fixing that for Jardine so I don’t see it helping AA either.
by YoungGun on Oct 9, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
jardine is a scrapper...
arlovski is an athlete.. there’s a huge difference as to what you can teach the two.

Great to see Andrei actually goin to a MMA gym and training with high caliber mma fighters, hopefully he can make a permanent move to jackson’s and get back to top 10 HW contention

Andrei was a victim of the hype machine
I think Andrei , who was never really a great fighter , was led to believe he was by the media and internet rankings (who ranked him 2 before the Fedor fight). Then came the devastating crash back to reality with two straight losses – and the whole russian roulette thing. I’m not blaming the media , the man is grown and is responsible for himself , but it’s pretty obvious he got way more hype than he should’ve .
I hope he re-signs with StrikeForce , they need more heavyweights…
