WEC 43 Main Card Preview

Two of the WEC's top lightweight fighters will clash in a five-round title match-up on Saturday evening at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas airing live on Versus at 10 PM EST. Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone will look to attain the Interim Lightweight title and battle current Lightweight champion Jamie Varner with a win, but rising star Ben Henderson seeks to spoil a rematch between Cerrone and Varner with a victory. The card will also feature WEC veterans Rich "Cleat" Crunkilton, Rafael Assuncao, and Damacio Page along with an excellent list of preliminary bouts that should interest the hardest of the hardcore fanbase. Check out our preliminary card preview here.

Donald_cerrone_vs_ben_henderson_medium The main event will feature an Interim lightweight championship between Team Jackson's Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone (10-1) and well-rounded wrestler Ben "Smooth" Henderson (9-1). Cerrone is coming off a victory over James Krause at WEC 41 while Henderson enters the contest with a TKO victory over Shane Roller.

Henderson offers some interesting challenges for Cerrone in this bout. He's a two-time NAIA Collegiate All-American, black belt in Taekwondo, and a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and he trains with MMA Lab, who houses current UFC fighter Efrain Escudero. He's defeated some solid up-and-comers in precision Muay Thai striker Anthony Njokuani, vaunted wrestler Shane Roller, and former UFC fighter and grappler Diego Saraiva. He's fought nearly every style of fighter, but Cerrone offers a mix of styles along with a much stronger training camp to prepare him for this bout.

Cerrone's grappling ability is highly dynamic as he works a high guard and works for submissions actively. He also has a solid Muay Thai striking game with a lot of range for opponents to wade through. Fortunately for Henderson, Cerrone's stand-up defense is nearly non-existent, but he's proven that his chin is nearly indestructible. There in lies the challenge for Ben Henderson.

While Henderson has the wrestling and grappling credentials to give Cerrone some problems, Cerrone has enough grappling acumen to stuff Henderson's attempts on the floor. Cerrone's stand-up is good enough to punish Henderson over five rounds, but the ultimate question is whether Henderson can actually catch Cerrone and hurt him enough to warrant a stoppage. It should be an interesting mix of styles, but I'll take Cerrone via decision.

Dave_jansen_vs_rich_crunkilton_medium Former lightweight contender Richard Crunkilton (16-2) will battle undefeated WEC newcomer Dave Jansen (12-0) in what could be a much closer fight than fans may realize. Crunkilton comes in following a decision victory over Sergio Gomez at WEC 33 and a loss to former champion Rob McCullough at WEC 30 that was for the lightweight strap. Jansen enters the bout after a three-fight stint with M-1 Challenge in which he defeated RioHeroes veteran Flavio Alvaro, South Korean Uicheol Nam, and making quick work of Russian Amirkhan Mazihov in only 0:22 seconds.

Crunkilton's style is no secret. He'll try to wrestle Jansen to the floor and either choke him out or pound him out as quickly as he can. With the solid wrestlers he trains with at American Kickboxing Academy, he'll surely have the edge in that department. Jansen also has some wrestling ability on the ground as he is a member of the wrestling powerhouse in Team Quest. Both men lack adept striking ability, but Crunkilton should be the better wrestler in this match-up. The only caveat to pushing Crunkilton into a winning scenario here is that he's been plagued by the injury bug, this bout only being his second in two years. Jansen has fought an impressive eleven fights since Crunkilton's loss to Rob McCullough. Ring rust may come into play, so Jansen isn't a bad pick here.

Star-divide

Raphael_assuncao_vs_yves_jabouin_medium In feathweight action, the most successful of the three Assuncao brothers, Rafael Assuncao (13-1), will battle WEC newcomer Yves Jabouin (14-4) in what should be a classic striker vs. grappler match-up. Assuncao enters the bout following a decision victory over Jameel Massouh at WEC 40. He's won eight of his thirteen wins via submission, and holds a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt along with having a heavy background in Shotokan karate, winning a 2004 championship in the martial art that has been recently made popular by Lyoto Machida's dominance in the UFC's light heavyweight division.

Jabouin comes out of TriStar gym in Montreal, Quebec, a gym famous for housing UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. He's primarily a striker with eleven of his fourteen wins coming by way of knockout, but the level of competition he has faced is nowhere near the level that Assuncao has battled in the past. Jabouin's most recognizable fight was a losing effort to Sam Stout at TKO 16.

While this is a somewhat intriguing fight at a glance, a deeper look would suggest that Assuncao's prowess in both the stand-up and ground game will dominate Jabouin in this match-up. Jabouin hasn't faced any competition recently to push him to that next level, and Assuncao should be able to pick up the easy win here.

Damacio_page_vs_will_campuzano_medium The first main card bout of the evening that will be televised on Versus will be a bantamweight clash between Team Jackson-trained Damacio Page (11-4) and WEC newcomer Will Campuzano (6-0). Page is coming off a devastating knockout win over Marcos Galvao at WEC 39 in which he laid out Galvao in only 0:18 seconds into the first round. Campuzano enters the contest with an unblemished record against some questionable competition, so this will be a substantial move up in competition from the regional level.

Page should be the more well-rounded fighter in this match-up as he does have a wrestling base coupled with power punching. He'll also likely be a bigger than Campuzano, so the clinch game, much like in his battle with Galvao, could be a bit overpowering for Campuzano. Campuzano's strength is the striking department, specifically his boxing technique. He likes to keep his hands up, stick and move, and throw the straight right along with combinations. His ground game isn't terrible, but he showed some problems against some lowly competition when put on his back. Page could probably safely pound out Campuzano from the top if he chose to do so, but I'm anticipating a show for the fans.

Page should be able to use his power to overwhelm Campuzano standing, but I think he can also implement a top control game if he proves the feet to be a futile effort. I think Page has more ways to win, easily a better training camp, and has more well-rounded skills. I'll take Damacio Page by technical knockout.

I really can’t see Cerrone going 5 rounds without a finish.

I’m taking a safe pick here. I think Cerrone should finish, but you never know..

I see Cerrone walking through this one relatively easily.

I do feel sorry for Will Campuzano though. That’s one hell of a welcoming present.

He definitely has a solid stand-up base in terms of being technical. He keeps his hands up, solid straight punching, although he had some very loopy punches as he tired out.

I agree, upset is what I'm looking for. ...

I train with Ben at The LAB in Glendale. He’s one of the nicest guys out there. People often say that, but this kid is an exceptional athlete and just as down to Earth as they get. Cerrone is a good dude too, these guys were buddies before this, and still are. Ben has crazy strength for his weight, strong base, great wrestling and jiu-jitsu. He did some work in Cali sharpening his Muay Thai in the Sityodtong LA, so he has stepped it up again for the biggest fight in his life. Gotta rep the LAB!!! GO! BEN!!

I saw Henderson fight live in San Diego having never heard of him, and I’ve been a fan from that day. I’m excited to see him get this opportunity!

I think alot of people are underestimating Henderson in this fight and think its a given the Cerrone vs.Varner fight. Florian talked about it yesterday on MMA live and its the same thing I thought about the Cowboys wrestling and takedown Def is one thing Henderson can exploit . One thing in the past that was Cerrone’s biggest weakness is his wrestling and especially defending the takedown. I think Henderson can do the same Varner did for 5 rounds and win a decision on points from takedowns,GNP, and position alone. Sure If I was betting my hard earned loot on this fight its going on the cowboy, but I don’t think its a clear cut winand cake walk like so many others do ?

Agreed

Henderson has great wrestling and great submission defense, Seems like a good combo to take Cerrone out.

You hit the nail on the head there Shaun3288 what you said is exactly how Henderson won that fight last night his wrestling and especially his sud defense was just amazing.

OK, I have been warned, so I will re-word my comment. I disagree that Crunkilton is a better wrestler than Jansen. Jansen comes from the University of Oregon wrestling team as well as Team Quest. Jansen clearly has the advantage on the ground, IN MY OPINION. Crunkilton has a slight advantage in the stand up, but I see Jansen playing into his own strengths and taking the fight to the ground and grinding out a decision or submitting Crunkilton.

Well, he’s not a better wrestler on paper at all. Crunkilton’s stand-up isn’t great either, but he probably does have a slight edge. Jansen could beat Crunkilton with wrestling if he manages to put him on his back first, but overall… Crunkilton is the better wrestler.

To me

the odds of +300 for Henderson is good value. I really like Henderson and think he has a good shot to win and is by no means a mismatch… just not featuring two stars so maybe that’s why the event isn’t hyped enough.

I really, really wish I could see this card

I’ve already missed 2 Caps games, now I’m missing WEC. Versus, Comcast and DirecTv really need to kiss and make up.

You say that Crunk is a better wrestler, but that Jansen can beat him with wrestling? I guess I am missing something. Not sure why my first post was deleted and I was sent a warning, but I will re-ask the question, have you ever watched any of Jansens prior fights? I am not “calling out an author” or whatever it is your “moderators” call it after deleting posts, merely asking a valid question. Jansen is a better overall wrestler, in application, if not on paper.

by CageFighter72 on Oct 9, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually, you’re being quite rude in denying the questions you asked.

Who wrote this? You obviously didnt do your research prior to writing this.

You did call me out.

Secondly, Crunk is the better wrestler, but that doesn’t mean a weaker wrestler can’t actually get him to the floor. Nobody was claiming Crunk was an Olympic wrestler while Jansen was a high school level wrestler.

To answer your questions, I have watched many of Jansen’s fights. Jansen isn’t the better wrestler, and all we have is on paper at this point because Jansen hasn’t fought an equal in wrestling as Crunkilton. If Jansen passes this test, then you can walk around saying he’s a better wrestler, but it’s more than likely that Crunkilton will have ANOTHER problem implementing an actual gameplan. If he tries to come out standing, as you said that Crunk is better, he’s an idiot. Jansen will, if that happens, win via wrestling. Not because he’s better, but because Crunk actually thought it was a better strategy to stand, which it isn’t.
