Report: Tito Ortiz vs Forrest Griffin to Rematch at UFC 106
Kevin Iole tweeted:
Tito Ortiz gonna fight FORREST GRIFFIN at UFC 106 on Nov 21 in Vegas. Just confirmed with #UFC prez.
MMA Madness has more on the match:
It is probably one of the more talked about decisions in Forrest Griffin's career, and now he will get an opportunity to avenge the razor thin decision against Tito Ortiz at UFC 106.
Griffin will step in Mark Coleman's place...
Griffin and Ortiz first met at UFC 59, where Ortiz scraped a split decision victory over Griffin, in what became Griffin's coming out party. Griffin was solidified as a potential contender, going three rounds with a former UFC light heavyweight champion, and not just another face from the initial season of "The Ultimate Fighter."
This is brilliant save-the-day matchmaking by Joe Silva and Dana White. Forrest Griffin is nearly as big a draw as Tito Ortiz. Both fighters are in need of rehab -- Tito after a lackluster run in his last fights in the UFC and Forrest after a humiliating defeat at the hands of middleweight champ Anderson Silva.
This match is even bigger than the Tito Ortiz vs Mark Coleman bout it replaces and truly will make UFC 106 a mega-event.
Once again, the UFC will win no matter who wins this fight.

Perfect.
It’ll be a tough but not un-winnable fight for Tito (& he won’t have the detractors claiming Coleman was too washed-up to win), and Forrest can put on a damn good show against Tito, win or lose.

Forrest Griffin running, you say?

Why, yes. It is a distinct possibility based on the evidence above.

Good idea, UFC.
Depending on how Tito looks coming off the layoff and surgery, he’s got a good shot at taking this one. Forrest isn’t a guy with big knockout power for Tito to worry about.
on the fence
Hope it’s a good show…it’s been a long while since there first fights and they are both coming off from horrible losses to the best fighters in the world.

Really, REALLY dangerous fight for Ortiz
After a year off, he’s going to take on a guy who was the LHW champ last year? Regardless of what Silva did to him, Forrest is a tough matchup for any LHW. Tito is either really underestimating Forrest or he has some guts taking this fight after all that time off.
Really not sure which is the case.
coleman was a more dangerous fight imo
coleman could conceivably outwrestle tito to a decision but doesn’t he doesn’t have the credibility that forrest does. there is more to gain from beating griffin and people wouldn’t hold a loss against him the same way the would if it were coleman. griffin probably has a better shot to win it than coleman just because he has less glaring weaknesses but coleman is actually a pretty bad style matchup for tito and there is not a lot to gain from it
Dangerous fight for both guys, I would have put Brian Stan in to lose to Tito via lay and pray over possibly ruining Forrest forever and smashing Tito’s comeback.
Dangerous move by Joe Silva…. dangerous dangerous dangerous matchmaking as far as business goes.

no it's not
both fighters are damaged goods going into this fight, coming out the winner will be a contender and BOTH are huge draws.
Follow me on Twitter @KidNate
yea, I don’t think it’s dangerous at all.
The winner gets instant credibility, probably a top 10 ranking, and will be very close to a title shot, the loser will not lose that much to much of the UFC’s fanbase because both fighters are popular and looked at as awesome.
Griffin’s already in the top 10. Regardless, I think the winner will be in the top 10.

Great decision
to have Griffin replace Coleman in this fight.

Wow
Much better match than Tito vs. Coleman.
This does look to be an amazing card.

Good Matchup...?
its good esp for last min…
i’m just not really a huge fan of either man but definitely something for the casual fans.
Nice!
This one is hard for me to predict. I think Forest should take it, but no idea how his mental state is now… should be a hell of a match tho!
"Why am I here? Why does my mind have wings? Why do blue midgets hit me with fish?!" - The Tick
Ortiz has the better top game, but he’s been out longer. Griffin is durable and scrappy, but he’s coming off one heck of a tough loss.
Should be an interesting fight.
Griffin’s mental state will be interesting to see. Could even be the determining factor; not saying that he’ll win if he comes in focused and determined, but that he could very well lose if he comes in distracted or lacking confidence regardless of what shape Tito is in after his time off.

Couldn't agree more
I personally feel that if Griffin comes into this fight with the right frame of mind – namely, the frame of mind that he wants to take out all his anger, frustration and pain on Tito to make up for his last lost, then Tito is going to have his freakin’ hands full.
For all his faults, for all his ups and downs, Forrest is no fool. He knows that this fight with Tito can and will be just as critical for his fighting career has their first meeting.
Win or lose, to quote an MMA cliche, he absolutely needs to leave it all in the cage that night.

Huge step up in opponent ranking for Ortiz
Tito just went from fighting the #15 LHW to the #4 (by my own ranking).
A win for Ortiz puts him in the Top 5 and only one more win (against another Top 5er) away from a title shot.
You frequently reference your own rankings. Do you post them somewhere?

matchmaking fun
If Ortiz beats Griffin I’d match him against the winner of Evans vs T.Silva. The winner of that fight gets a title shot against the winner of Machida vs Rua.
Meantime I’d give Jones the winner of Cane vs Nogueira, and match Franklin against Jardine, in a contest for a spot in the Top 10. Assume Nogueira takes out Cane and Jones. Next I’d give him the winner of Franklin vs Jardine. The winner of that fight could have the next shot at the LHW title.
Jones is fighting Matt Hammill.

I'm sorry,
but I give Forrest every chance in the world to win. Anderson is a tough loss, but he would have done the exact same to Tito. And Rashad beat Tito as well as Forrest, even though Tito should have won that fight. Imma pull a Robert Drysdale and say Forrest by inverted triangle… : D
"I will knock your hair black!"- Ken Shamrock to Tito Ortiz
Rashad didn’t beat Tito, Tito would have won the match but the was deducted point(s) which led to a draw. Nevertheless I thought that Griffin took the 2nd & 3rd round to take the first fight and i expect him to win this fight in 3 rounds as well.

I just re-watched the first fight. Lawd of mercy! WTF! Was Forrest the victim of hometown cooking? Or were the two judges giving Tito superstar treatment? Cecil Peoples 29-27 for Tito can some what be explained. But, Abe Belardo 30-27 for Tito? did he pull those numbers out of a hat and just turned them in? That had to be one of the worse judge scoring in history combat sports

Yeah, it’s usually a bad sign when Peoples’ scores AREN’T the worst ones…

If you watch the fight without the commentary you can see that Tito lands just as much as Griffin in the last two rounds.

Yea I was pretty sure in the latest interview he said he hadn’t been in the gym very much……any bets on if he loses he’ll sprint from the cage again?…..I wonder if he loses this fight as badly as he did the Silva fight…how many losses would they let him gain before they walk him…
Forrest is part of the “pantheon” of the UFC now. He’ll be employed by them for life, as a fighter or as something else. They’ll never cut him loose because his name recognition is simply to high.

Yeah well they’ll cut someone if they’ve spent every waking moment telling everyone how shit the president is. I don’t think Forrest has the energy to launch a war like that against Dana, maybe something like cake but not another human.
This shirt is "dry clean only", which means it's dirty.
Nah, if there was ever a fighter that wouldn’t be coming back it was Tito and he’s back in the fold now. This is the one good thing about having Strikeforce around- as long as there’s an enemy Dana will always have a reason to keep guys around even if he’d rather not. He’ll never let a guy like Forrest go, he’d be far and away the biggest draw in Steikeforce even if they have nobody to fight him. Well, other than Mousasi.

Not only the fact about Forrest being a draw, but look at Bonnar…Dana said he’ll always have a job, even though his peak seemed to be Griffin-Bonnar 1 while Forrest just got better. If Bonnar wasn’t in that fight, he would have been cut long ago IMO.

Two totally different situations. Tito talked shit, Forrest is a company man. Tito was pre-TUF, Forrest WAS TUF. Tito thought there would be multi-million dollar deals waiting for him, Forrest – thanks in part to Tito – knows that there isn’t.

it would have been better if they could switch like having rashad v.s tito
and then forrest vs thiago. because rashad can afford another loss but griifin cannnot lose three straight fights in row
Why not? I think Forrest has a better chance of beating Tito than Thiago anyway.

Forrest by UD
Having someone he can actually hit in front of him is going to be a dream come true for Forrest.
This is a must win situation for Forrest…if he wins, which he should, it’s not going to do that much damage to Tito’s image on his return. But if he loses, we might be hearing the slow screech of the door closing. Either way both of these guys have a lot to fight for, Forrest just has a lot more to lose.

Call me crazy but I liked the Coleman match up more. I just prefer watching coleman, he is always giving 110% (you can be that gassed if you don’t give your all right?) and his style brings up some nostalgia. And he is kinda like rocky balboa in his last movie at this point. I’m not really interested to see griffin fight for the moment though.
You don't look like a Tanaka.
So do you think Forrest is going to fight Tito with the same strategy he fought him with last time?
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.
Man, no easy fights for Forrest.
We gotta mix a Hector Ramirez back in for this guy at some point.

This is great. I think this match will say a lot about Forrest’s character and his belief in himself. I hope he comes out fueled by the embarrassment he felt from his last fight. I hope Tito fights just well enough to face more competition, but get completely whipped by someone else in the division.
Well,
Considering he did the best out of anybody against Lyoto, makes you wonder if he could survive again..
"I will knock your hair black!"- Ken Shamrock to Tito Ortiz
Nope
Tito is merely a year older, a year rustier; Machida has improved his STR & CON, earning two brutal KOotN awards.
Tito is old & battle-worn; Machida has hardly taken any damage his entire career.
Tito is too set in his style to evolve; Machida’s style is at minimum unconventional and only gets better.

I think I read that Tito has been training his boxing at Wild Card with Freddie Roach…If thats true, and the ring rust is not a factor, Forrest might be in trouble. Tito can take a punch, and Forrest doesn’t really have KO power anyway.
