Demian Maia Looking to Fight in December
After being one fight away from a title fight with Anderson Silva, Demian Maia now has to start all over again after being knocked out by Nate Marquardt at UFC 102. Tatame has a quick quote by Demian where he says he's trying to get back in the Octagon as soon as possible.
"I'm putting the pressure on so I can fight in December or January... I want to fight in December but we'll see. I have no idea [about an opponent]"
Who do you guys think he should fight? I was personally hoping he'd consider dropping down to welterweight... either way one of my favorite fighters easy.

Maia is in such a strange position right now as far as his standings go. He has beaten some solid mid-to-upper-midtier Middleweights in Sonnen, Quarry, Herman, Jensen, and MacDonald, so it shows that he is too good to be fighting mid-tier talent, but he loses in destructive fashion once he fought a top level Middleweight in Marquardt. If he stays in Middleweight, should the UFC give him someone close to the top or another mid-to-upper-midtier like an Alan Belcher or someone around that level? Like Marcelo states, I think he should drop down to Welterweight if he is able to and comfortable doing so. Just because Maia is able to does NOT necessarily mean that it would be a good weight for him (for many fighters dropping to the lowest weight possible is no problem, but a few don’t feel comfortable doing that).

I’ve been loving the Sexy-Wandy idea. I say zap Gouveia-Belcher and do Gouveia-Maia.

i like the move down to ww idea. same for akiyama. both are small mw’s and lord knows gsp needs some fresh challengers.
Maia said that he usually walks in the octagon weighing around 200 lbs. But he’s not that lean, so I guess he could loose some fat and cut to 170.

I don’t understand this idea that Maia should move to welterweight. His one(!) career loss was from a flush one-punch KO; it had nothing to do with being too small.
I’d love to see him fight Akiyama, who would pose a serious threat on the feet and could potentially hang on the floor like no one else he’s fought so far (except Marquardt, we never got the chance to see them grapple). Yushin Okami might be another interesting match if Okami beats Sonnen.
Akiyama has heavy hands, and if I’m not mistaken, he’s now training in Greg Jacksons camp.
Deja vu?

Akiyama is at Jackson’s? Whoa.
Maia needs a tough fight against a reasonably good striker, because he clearly needs to tighten up his defense. I think Akiyama would be perfect.

You think Aaron Simpson would put up much more of a fight than Chael Sonnen? I’ll agree that Simpson has power and takedowns but a lot of guys who have faced Maia can boast as much.
Why is dropping down a weight class always the next idea? You’re just gonna fight other guys just as good, you just gonna be skinnier. The only good drop is if you are a small heavyweight or aren’t cutting at all at the class you’re in.

Have Maia face Dan Miller that would be a great fight and a good test to see where both guys stand now after tough losses.
Miller just lost to a guy Maia already beat, so that win wouldn’t do anything for him. I say give Maia another high-profile or top-level (not always the same thing, sadly) opponent and keep him near the title mix.
