UFC 106 Preview: The Softer Side of Brock Lesnar

Photo

The champ exposes it to Dan Wetzel:

Despite his immense size and years of performing as a big character in pro wrestling, Lesnar, 32, is a soft spoken guy. He's a farm kid from South Dakota , who now lives up here, amidst the rolling hills and fishing lakes a couple hours drive northwest of the Twin Cities.

He's most comfortable with down-to-earth people he's known for years. His 10-week training camp is run by his full-time coach, Marty Morgan, who worked with Lesnar at Minnesota . One training partner is UFC fighter Chris Tuchscherer, who after his last fight immediately worked three weeks running a tractor on a 10,000-acre farm in North Dakota.

...

He, his wife and infant son live on a secluded, wooded plot of land. A second-grade daughter from a previous relationship lives in this 10,000-population town. It’s why he’s here. "I see her as much as the court allows," he said.

Family is everything to him. He’s one of the few athletes you’ll ever met who not only speaks about trying to be the best father, but also the best husband. Then he appears to back it up. His hobbies are hunting and fishing and working his farm.

"Fighting is not my life," the 32-year-old says. "My family is my life."

Pretty heart warming, no?

Well it is Brock Lesnar, so there's this charming bit of folksiness as he talks to high school buddy Jon Madsen:

Madsen mentions a girl they both knew back in the day.

“What happened to her?” Lesnar asked.

“Three kids,” Madsen said.

“She finally put out, huh?” Lesnar deadpanned.

I assume all of you aren't married then.

Grabbing the mic and bragging to a crowd of 10K+ about going home and getting on top of your wife isn’t an example of being a good husband.

Hopefully those 4 will respond to prove me wrong.

Regardless, I doubt many women would consider that the sort of behavior they expect out of a “good husband”. I doubt anyone, male or female, would appreciate being used in that manner as a part of some anger fueled rant.

I disagree again

You must not know many women who get turned on by fighting/bravado/cockiness, etc. A lot of women would be thrilled. I’m not trying to pick a fight with you, just trying to point out that not all women, husbands, marriages, etc are all puppy dogs and ice cream.

You can't assume to know what anyone would feel in that situation.

It’s not like Brock is married to his high school girlfriend from a small podunk town in the middle of nowhere who was suddenly thrust into this world of big crowds and cameras. He is married to freakin’ Sable.

Maybe she didn’t appreciate it and reamed him for it afterward OR maybe she understood that it was simply an “anger fueled rant” because she understands what its like to be in front of thousands of people and the dumb things people say when their in front of a camera and full of testosterone and adrenaline.

I personally would be furious, but I’m not someone who has ever lived that kind of life nor would I assume that MY feelings for it would be shared by her.

I try and live by the cliche of “ass(out of)U(and)me”, but in this case I’m willing to risk it. Most people that publish nude sexual pictures of themselves probably have a desire to be appreciated in a sexual way. When they do it on a cover of Playboy and married the guy in question, I think it’s safe to assume that she very likely found the remarks complimentary.

His wife is a former pro wrassler whose whole schtick was based on her sexuality. She is also the featured spread (pun intended) of the highest selling issue in the history of Playboy magazine. I’m pretty sure she is not a shrinking violet who wilts every time her husband says something crass.

That’s normal though, or at least it’s pretty widespread. A few days before a tournament or any sort of competition comes up gyms (at least the one I train at) just turn a corner and everyone gets a mindset change because of the nerves and anticipation, it’s just how people deal with being anxious and scared.

He could very well be a saint outside of training/fighting, unfortunately he needs to learn how to control certain aspects of his behavior when he’s actually done with the fight…..

No, he lives his lifestyle just fine, with few distractions and without the bright lighs of the big city. The fact that he’s a world champ is a small part of his lifestyle, but it doesn’t change his day to day behavior.

You don’t have to look up to Lesnar, or anyone else. But this story shows that he’s a big farm kid, who still enjoys the same things he did growing up, but he just happens to be a UFC champ as well.

Lesnar isn’t really any different from most fighters.
I don’t really why there’s so much hate directed Brock Lesnar. He does his thing, he trains hard and he’s the champion. Period. So people can continue to bemoan that he’s not good for the sport, came from WWE, and disapprove of his behavior but at beat the beloved Randy Couture (who’s always had his share of problems with bigger heavyweights), Heath Herring, and the articulate, verbose, never at a lost for thoughts Frank Murrrr.

Go Lesnar! Go Carwin.

It is more or less a fluff piece but I think his detractors really make a big deal about his WWE past and his post-fight antics. Everybody is not going to be like Rich Franklin, Belfort or Couture. Just ask Quinton Jackson.

I think the title of the article “Enigmatic Lesnar defies definition” is unnecessary. There is no softer side of Lesnar, that just who he is. The whole dichotomy between the jock (fighter) and sensitive man is kind of overplayed cliche. Hershel Walker, (and I believe Tony Dorsett) took ballet to stay flexible. Big Marcus Jones like flowers, so what. WOW did you know that Mike Tyson likes birds and loves his children, so shocking.

My point is that the WWE thing is a copout. There are many reasons to dislike the guy, but the Brock supporters always fall back on the excuse that people dislike him because he was in the WWE.

As dnevil says, no one cares. The way he acts, stuff he says, etc – thats what he gets judged on, for better or worse.

Yeah he totally did and so did Mir. I don’t mind that stuff if it’s deserved but if it’s not it’s a totally different story. It’s all about treating people the way you want to be treated. I feel bad that he had a terrible upbringing and has had such a hard life but many great people that I know have had the same general bad upbringing and have made something out of themselves despite that. It’s up to you if you are going to let it break you or make you stronger.

Majority of top fighters. Machida , Silva , Fedor , GSP …etc. are soft spoken quiet type. Every guy they face is there toughest challange to date. Every interview before and after is exactly the same. Just PC mouth peices. Never stray out of line say whats to be expected. Brock has blown up so quick because is is the polar opposite of that. he is a champion who speaks his mind and doesn’t care what anybody thinks. I mean seriously do we need another fighter who bows and shakes every opponents hand? There is a reason Brock is the #1 draw in MMA. He knows that which is why he continues to do it.

From Patrick Freitas on the UG:

The last time Brock was in the public eye his values were questioned, based on the idiotic comments he made immediately after the Mir win.

With Brock’s next fight on the horizon, I wouldn’t be surprised if this article was at least partially engineered by the UFC’s public relations people. Its a intelligent tactical move to play up the ‘Brock is a wholesome family man’ story at this time. Had they done it immediately after the Mir win, it would’ve appeared too clearly as p.r. spin. The timing for this piece is perfect.

And even if this article wasn’t the result of the UFC’s p.r. department, its a good story that gives a well-timed polish to Brock’s image.

I mentioned in one of the fanshots that Brock is getting the full GW Bush PR treatment. Clearing trees, shootin’ guns — just a good old honest farmboy tryin’ his best.

The PR machine is out in full force, is very blatant and obvious. And sadly, it will work.

Seriously, I don’t get the hate that people have for pro athletes. Most of the things we know of them are of second hand accounts, and the majority of the things they say (whether it’s “good” or “bad”) are not indicative of who they are as a person.

They might say all the right things and be respectful in interviews, but who knows if in real life they’re bunch of pricks. Or they maybe act like a jerk and an asshole on camera, but in private they might be a genuinely decent person.

The point is that if you don’t know them and interact with them personally, who are you to judge?

A lot of fighters are probably jerks in private (I know I am!). But they don’t go shouting their views at reporters to remind them to publicize those views.

Does that make sense?

Give me a break

Maybe Brock Lesnar is a good guy. I don’t know him, and would never judge somebody just from what I hear them say on TV. But he’s gotta cut loose of this, “I’m a simple, down-home country boy more comfortable around rural people.” Dude is ridiculously rich and spent a large amount of time in the bright lights/big money WWE. Whatever he is, a simple country boy he is no longer, if indeed he ever were to begin with.

Perhaps that he's more comfortable around rural people

because he hasn’t let his success go to his head? I don’t see him manwhoring it around Vegas or doing stupid shit like that. Outside of the “spotlight”, what’s wrong with enjoying a quiet life around other people that enjoy the same thing?

Nothing wrong with it. Just don’t believe that, having survived the world of the WWE and done business with those folks, he can pass himself off as less-than-sophisticated anymore at this point. He’s not a country rube, so I don’t know why he’s aspiring to play the part.

Jem is not entitled to stating that Lesnar is a Douchebag for one… as it violates fighter bashing. Furthermore, the entire honophobic conversation was completely ridiculous considering it led to a lot of comments that were borderline bashful.

If you want to discuss the homophobic commments, stick to homophobic and refrain from “douchebag” and “asshole”. You don’t have to like the guy, but stick to points that are meaningful that aren’t laced with bashing.

b) I can’t see them but I to my knowledge only one comment said “douchebag,” obviously in an attempt to be over-the-top and only indirectly, and 200 following comments didn’t. The conversation, you’ll note, got progressively LESS vitriolic, not more.

I dunno - is that offensive?

it was certainly crude

and not how I’d like to see my sister being discussed in the press.

I actually was being serious.

Probably not a rea classy stmt, but I was wondering why it offened Nate so much.

Wow, I thought it was a great joke. Most parents and young girls I know don’t wish to be know as promiscuous or slutty.

I know I’m from a family that talking about sex is considered classless by many, but I hope that Kid Nate ain’t coming from the same angle as them.

i was talking in general. most times, people don’t go to the link provided and read the whole story. in this case it wasn’t a whole lot, but many times i think it would change what and how people post if they read the whole story. for real. :)

The problem with that story

…for uberfans like the BE community, is that it rehashed old news for far too long before getting to the meat. And when you get there, there’s hardly any meat.

And my criticism of the article stand: it’s an obvious attempt to whitewash Brock’s public persona. Good for him and all, but it doesn’t present a complete picture, while trying to give the illusion that it does.

TO THE BLOODY ELBOW COMMUNITY

Anyone I’ve offended in the greater Baltimore Washington region gets a beer on me at the Duclaw Brewing Company bar at Arrundel Mills tonight at 6:30.* I’ll be there with some friends having a drink before seeing Zombieland.

Brock Lesnar is welcome as well, but since he doesn’t have a computer, I doubt he’d show. (Can I call him a luddite?)

130+ comments on a Lesnar story that hasn’t been up that long. Interesting to see how so many people have so many different opinions on the guy. I guess his persona is working pretty good for him.

by xDieseLx on Oct 8, 2009 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

Personally

I neither like him or dislike him. I think he says and does stupid things but whom among us doesn’t or hasn’t? I can see why people dislike him but I generally root for the guy now but I wouldn’t be upset if he lost.

I have no problem w/trash talking in sports

as long as you can back it up. Mir talked trash, got his head cracked and Brock, verbally, gave him the business after the fight. If you dont walk the walk, you should expect someone to call you out on it.

My opinion on the whole post fight antics on Brocks part has been this…Brock is a big ass country boy who knows how to fight. His opponent (who beat him handily) talks phenomenal amounts of trash. Big country boy smashes his face, and gives him a piece of his mind.

Brock never was painted to be some professional guy who loves the sport, theres no reason we should really expect him to be. Now I’m not saying thats a good thing for him to do…but we shouldn’t act like he betrayed us. lol

I know I've defended Lesar...

a few times in already in this thread, but wanted to get my true opinion out there. I DISLIKE LESNAR! I dislike Lesnar cause he’s barely older than me, seemingly has a happy marriage to a Playboy cover girl, has a family, already has a more than a few sporting related championship of which he may or may not have deserved, is many times richer than my unemployed broke self, and he did most of this with a penis tattooed on his chest. Yes I hate him! (Just misquoting Doc Holliday here, I don’t really hate him).
