Matt Hughes comments on potential opponents:
Heavy.com: At UFC 103, we saw some fresh faces coming up - Paul Daley beating Kampmann, Vitor Belfort beating Rich Franklin. Do you plan on throwing a monkey wrench into their plans?
Matt Hughes: "As far as who I fight next? You know, looking at these younger kids who are wanting to come in and be the next world champion or be the next contender, I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't know if I'll take on those guys.
There are plenty of older guys out there with big names who can fight, too. I like to take fights where I've got something to win. If I take a fight against Mike Swick or Josh Kosheck, I've really got nothing to gain from that fight besides a paycheck and beating somebody up. They've got more to win than I do. Those aren't the kinds of fights that interest me.
Royce Gracie was a big fight, you know? It was a huge name, a guy that had won the old tournaments in the beginning. Those are the fights I like, the ones I can really get revved up for and get motivated. Those are the kinds of fights that gets me into the gym ready to train and work."
Heavy.com: Would a fight with Hallman motivate you?
Matt Hughes: "It might. I lost to him, but I've gone on and done bigger and better things since then. It just seems like I was the only guy he could ever beat. He just hasn't done much except for beating Matt Hughes twice. That's what I dislike about that fight. Who else has he beat? The last time he beat me was in 1999. We're talking ten years or so since he last beat me, and he hasn't done anything since."

Not saying he doesnt have a valid point,
because a fight with Koscheck, Daley, or Swick wouldnt do much for his legacy, but deep down he has to know he would prolly lose those fights.

Matt, you just signed a new contract. You have been giving us a long list of people you don’t want to fight. Is there any one you DO want to fight?

If he wants a bigger name, then do some catch weight fights with fighters out of the 185 pound or the 155 pound. I mean personally, a Dan Henderson vs. Matt Hughes Fight at 180 would be an awesome one to see, (obviously this WILL NOT happen) I mean there is just not enough “names” in the 170 pound division that would be on the level of Royce Gracie or GSP, there is not enough star power to match Hughes in that division, because there is AKA, then prospects… so Matt Hughes might not be fighting for quite some time.

![Matt Hughes' Trainer Matt Pena said Hughes' remarks calling Renzo "Old" were taken out of context by Steve Cofield.
The claims that Hughes is calling Renzo old is a complete fabrication from a writer struggling to find a story, so he is making one! I was next to the two guys when they were doing their interviews both times in Miami. Hughes was having fun with the interview and making a references to how the young new generation of fighters has arrived, and how him and Renzo were the older guys fighters in the division. So Cofield turns this, and tells Serra that "Matt called Renzo old" in an attempt to create fireworks. A gracious Serra (after his win) saw right through it, and said Hughes must have been kidding. Then Serra said, if Matt thinks Renzo old than Hughes is taking Renzo too lightly. All of a sudden he's pushing a story that Serra said, "Hughes is taking Renzo too lightly".
The truth is, Matt thinks Renzo is the best MMA fighting Gracie out there. Matt is currently in Salt Lake City with Jeremy Horn and myself at Elite Performance. Matt showing up to camp 9 weeks out is a record for him. Hardly the signs of someone taking a fight lightly. We anticipate a tough fight, and Matt will be ready for a tough fight.
Cofield at Cagewriter purely has an axe to grind with Hughes, which is kind of funny. When reading his articles, his opinion and knowledge of Hughes is based on what he saw on The Ultimate Fighter show. This is purely laughable. Everyone knows its edited to create a storyline (having done two seasons myself, you still may not know how badly its edited). Those that have actually met Matt, spent time with him and dislike him, I can respect that. Everyone has a personality type that doesn't mesh with them.
I think its sad that in such an exciting sport as MMA, with so many interesting things to write about that MMA atheletes have to deal with guys like this. Cofield is just one of a handful of MMA bloggers/journalist that use such underhanded techniques to create a story. There are a many very good sports writers out there, so understand that I'm not lumping them all together. But in no other sport out there are there so many bad writers, writers trying to make a living out of disrespecting the athletes.

[UPDATE] by Anton Tabuena - Cofield Responds:
"I looked over the posts. I screwed that up. I mistook Hughes' sarcasm and relayed it poor to Serra. I'll geton the UG later "
