TUF 10: The Ultimate Fighter Live Discussion (Episode 4)
Well, that was...special. In between being stuck in crucifixes, Kimbo Slice gave Roy Nelson a taste of Miami BBQ. Unfortunately, a couple of menacing strikes does not a win make, and Nelson took advantage of a serious mismatch on the floor in route to a stoppage victory.
And with a loss to the season's odds-on favorite, we're immediately left guessing if Kimbo will end up back in the competition. Ex-NFL'er Marcus Jones has already been shown dealing with various ailments. Will he end up as Kimbo Slice's golden ticket? (Does that make Dana White some bald headed, Bostonized Willy Wonka?)
In bigger picture news, Team Rashad has jumped out to a 3-0 start to the season. Quinton Jackson's wanton drafting and irrational matchmaking has already come back to bite him in the ass. When will Team Baracus get their first win? Will Kimbo ultimately redeem himself? Did Greg Jackson go back to Dagobah during the show's taping?

Subsidiary question:
What did dana put in Jones’s bottle?
I’ll bet on snake juice.
You don't look like a Tanaka.
I was pretty much on Herb’s side here, Roy wasn’t doing any damage and that is usually when I think the fight should be stopped— when you see someone getting destroyed and they cannot stop it from happening.
But I have seen a lot of contradictions about the stoppage in various articles. Even Dean said he looked at the clock. But take a look at the Gina Carano fight where it got stopped with a second or two left in the round and that ref talks about how it would be unfair to let the round give her a recovery even though she could have made it to the end of the round without getting destroyed.
When you don’t have any definite rules for this sort of thing, then you get totally different results in different matches under similar circumstances. But in the end, if Roy was that worried about having the fight stopped, then he should have laid into Kimbo harder. In the end, he protected his hands, which was smart for how much they have to fight on the show. And he still got the win, so he shouldn’t complain too much.
I know where the confusion is coming from
“And with a loss to the season’s odds-on favorite, we’re immediately left guessing if Kimbo will end up back in the competition.”
When looking at this sentence, you are assuming that ‘with a loss to’ means ‘assigning a loss to’. This is not correct.
The sentence is about Kimbo and the loss is obviously his. ‘to the season’s odds-on favorite’ is to give a more in-depth description to ‘a loss’…….Kimbo’s loss.
So Kimbo’s loss was to the season’s odds-on favorite.
Does that make sense or was I assuming wrong? I thought you inferred that Kimbo was the season’s odds-on favorite and that was what you were questioning…not that you were questioning Roy Nelson’s odds on the show.

With regards to the entire TUF set up, does anyone here feel the “Team” aspect is really pretty irrelevant now? I mean, even if one “Team” wins every single fight, they end up fighting each other anyway. I know they have the team set up to try and create some artificial drama, but it just seems pointless now. What they should do is, give out the monetary reward to the entire team for winning a preliminary bout, and not just the $5000 purse to the winner of each bout. The more fights one team wins, the more money the entire team can share amongst themselves. Take an idea from the “Survivor” show, and give the entire team whose fighter wins a bout, a chance to call home. Heck, they could even offer (they do already anyway to some degree) the entire winning team a chance to appear on the TUF finale, or give the winning teams’ fighters 1 fight contracts. They should do something to help motivate the fighters into wanting to help their team succeed if the UFC brass and Spike TV plan on staying with this set up.
The team aspect is only a gimmick, it’s irrelevant like you said, most people don’t care which team wins, I don’t remember which team won the last two seasons.
You don't look like a Tanaka.
I know Bisping won last year, because I had a theory that we were seeing Britain’s best against the Americans that couldn’t get into the UFC on their own.

Ugh. Hope thats not right, just for the fact that it spoils the “fight announcement” moment. I don’t think anyone will care too much, but think about the casual guy who’s like “Wait…thats the guy Kimbo was gonna replace…wtf!?” and just quits watching.
I’m glad Marcus gets to fight though, watching him overreact about getting pushed back due to his knee gave me mixed emotions. On one end, I’m thinking, dude…stfu and be glad you get time to recover. On the other I’m thinking, man, this guy has the heart of a warrior to argue with RAMPAGE about getting his fight on.

Does anyone think that Kimbo will ever achieve a decent ground game or at least the ability to fight off takedowns, given his late start in MMA?
Yeah...

The only reason I still like Rampage is because I realize he is a naturally gifted fighter, which explains why he is such a terrible coach. He’s not an especially technical guy so he doesn’t have anything better to tell his guys than vague things like “GET UP!” and “GET YOUR ARM OUT!” because he only knows what works for him.
If I had just watched TUF though, I’d probably hate him. He comes off as a real dick.

Shamrock seems like he’s a little bit…mentally unstable the last few years. The Tito beef got to his head… he was a coach before with the Lion’s Den but I don’t think he cared about coaching.
For Rampage, no matter how hard he tries, he will always be a bad coach. There’s no ability there…

What exactly is the difference between an Anaconda and a D'arce?
They look really similar to me, but maybe it’s because I’ve never taken any BJJ classes and have wrestled my whole life.
"If Ron Zook were an ice cream flavor, it would be praline and retard"

Great Question
Wikipedia says:
The D’Arce choke is similar to the Anaconda choke. The difference being that the choking arm is thread under the near arm, in front of the opponent’s neck, and on top of the far arm. The choke gets its name from Joe D’Arce, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Renzo Gracie. Though not the inventor of the choke, D’Arce performed this choke often and with great success in many Jiu Jitsu and submission grappling tournaments. Another name for this choke is the Brabo choke.

Also:
An anaconda choke is an arm triangle from the front headlock position. The man on top threads his arm under the opponents neck and through the armpit, and grasps his biceps. The performer then attempts to pin the bottom man onto the trapped shoulder so as to better interrupt the flow of blood, all the while applying pressure with the grasped biceps. He may accomplish this by rolling the man over the untrapped shoulder, (known as a gator roll) and use the momentum to turn the man onto his trapped shoulder. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was the first one to use it in MMA, although he and his twin brother learned this submission from Luis “Buscape” Firmino.

No house or training footage at all… =\
Was wondering this myself, he seemed pretty funny in the lead-up and he’s a veteran for whatever that’s worth. It seems like he might have kept to himself though or something, they were saying something about an outcast in the preview for next week and showed him.

Unless its clever editing
you can see that perhaps Rampage is worn out with MMA after all these years and you see it in this season. Rashad’s head seems so much more into everything about the show, the fight, and the fight game in general. It doesn’t surprise me that perhaps he was fishing for a way out.
It looked real shitty the way it ended, Rogers is a real kid that needs his coaches to back him up and Rampage, his coaches, and his team failed. Its not like he’s Big Country, who could handle that because he’s so experienced.

Had to catch the 11 EST showing this week...
I like the focus, relatively speaking, on the training. So far, very little house drama or other stupidity. The “will Kimbo return?” stuff is hopefully moot after Demico put in a more impressive performance—if anyone goes down, the spot should go to Demico. Of course Zuffa and SpikeTV may say otherwise. The quantity of commercials continues to piss me off.
Rampage and the coaching staff came off really bad in this episode. It’s sick how much better off the members of Rashad’s team are.
Rampage's coaching is atrocious
I couldn’t agree more, way to leave your fighter unattended pre-fight. That’s totally going to get his head in the right place to perform at 100%.
I think I am going to skip the rest of this season after tonight’s episode, the crappy commercials and the terrible reality T.V. editing and hyping. It’s intolerable and unacceptable frankly.
Rashad is gaining a new fan in me. He can rub people the wrong way at times with his cockiness, but at least he actually cares about the guys he’s training. I didn’t think Rampage could be worse as a coach after season 7 but damn he sucks as a coach. Just goes to show ya that just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you can teach it.

Abe's Blog
It’s hard to believe Rampage acted that way after the fight and didn’t want to give D a stool or even go in to the cage afterward. Well, I mean I guess I can, he left before my fight was even over. In fact now that I think about it, he wouldn’t even speak to me for a day or two after. I think Rashad did a very accurate job of describing the feelings after a loss and he was dead on. You do feel really low and I do think that a good coach will be there for you to help you through it.
I consider Rampage among my friends and in general I think he’s a decent guy. But at this point, it was feeling to me like his heart really wasn’t into being a coach; almost like he was just waiting out the clock. Maybe that wasn’t the case, but it was definitely my perception.
It’s borderline criminal to keep letting Rampage “coach” these guys. I’ve never been much of a fan, and it’s only gotten much worse on this show.
One of these days Rampage will pull a Junie and jump into the cage after or during a fight.

From Zak's blog ...
That’s when Rampage told Demico he gave up in the cage. You never say that to a fighter when his dream at being The Ultimate Fighter was just taken away. What kind of coaching style is that? Also the last thing Rampage said was that he had to go and read a part of the book he was carrying around for his acting class. I have an idea, why don’t you start acting like a [expletive] coach!
That last bit seals it for me, the rest of this season is going to suck so terribly bad. No doubt about it, Rampage has completely checked out. Being more concerned about getting Thai for lunch, telling your fighter he “quit” and his acting class book rather than coach is just plain ridiculous.
Outrageous. I feel so so badly for all the fellas on Rampages team. They deserved so much better. What the HELL was Dana thinking talking Rampage into coaching again. Wasn’t the lesson from Season 7 enough warning?
After seeing all this I think Rashad might beat Rampage
Just like with Forrest. But Rashad is even more motivated.
