I have to agree. If someone would’ve said I’d pick the picture of her clothed over the one where she’s topless but covering up before seeing the pictures, I would have said that doesn’t sound like me. She looks really cut. Way more ripped than I’ve ever seen her. I’m not saying it’s been significantly altered, but it looks like it’s been significantly altered.

This confused me too, and also I know why she’s on the cover and not Cyborg, but it’s notable to me that the female mixed martial artist on the cover of ESPN was on the wrong end of a high-profile beatdown.
Has Santos gotten any media coverage lately? I feel like there’s going to be a pretty noticeable double standard that only gets more blatant as time goes on
Actually, I guess this is less of a double standard because the first male MMAist on the cover of ESPN was also nowhere near a top athlete*, but it’s still sorta dumb IMO :)

This isn’t about mma.
They’re doing a special “body issue” and i really don’t know what the point of it is (besides the prophecy of Kevin Garnett and Starbury when ESPN the magazine was announced). There’s really no way that Cyborg would be in it, Gina is the female athlete with the body that will sell the most magazines.
As for the overall lack of cyborg coverage, that’s a separate battle that is going to be a struggle for SF.
But wouldn’t it make sense for the fitter woman to be on the cover of the body issue, especially if they’re going to use the woman as a sort of canvas for the airbrush anyhow?
Maybe. But there’s no way Cyborg on the cover sells more than Gina.

They’ve gone as far as putting ads on the cover of the magazine. They will always do the thing that makes the most money.
I recognize (if not understand) the reality of what you’re saying (and ESPN is probably thinking), but the double standard really rankles at me. I’m not complaining at you, just the situation.
Not sure there’s a double standard. There’s been some heavy discussion recently about Kimbo vs Roy Nelson where some people (not me!!) think that Roy Nelson shouldn’t fight for the UFC because he doesn’t have a nice enough body.

I hadn’t thought of that angle, and I can definitely agree with a lot of what you’re saying there.
The double standard to me is in how Carano is treated primarily as a sex object. The implication of the photo is that a woman is not interesting by merit of her skills alone, but by how photogenic her boobs are. Male MMAists, even if hated on or made famous by their looks, are still marketed first as Big Scary Men who hit other Big Scary Men. I can’t think of an example where a male MMAist is treated primarily as a sex object, and I think the double standard lies there; people might criticize Nelson’s body type, but he’s still considered and being marketed as a fighter, and no one’s selling the cover of ESPN with Kimbo’s wang hidden by the S in ESPN.
I do think it’s interesting that there are such parallels, even across gender lines; if Roy wins TUF, I bet he still gets paid less than Kimbo, because Kimbo has The Look. If Cyborg keeps winning and Carano can’t beat her, I bet Carano’s pay would still outstrip Cyborgs, because Carano has The Look.
It’s very strange and confusing to me that people are evidently more interested in a certain body type in a sport than they are in seeing successful athletes in the same sport, but so long as they’re being consistent about it…
(Total aside: I loved Scott Coker’s take on the marketability of Cyborg, talking about how it was a different angle, but not talking like it’s a bad angle to have “one of the fittest women in the world.”)

That would be me, and I argued that most people thought, including Joe Silva, that in today’s society, being “fat” or “overweight” is a negative thing as far as image goes.
