The Week in Quotes: September 27th - October 3rd

THIS IS THE GREATEST NIGHT IN THE HISTORY OF OUR SPORT!
"Me and Kimbo, we talked about it, like how much money we would have potentially lost by fighting actually on the show." - Roy "Big Country" Nelson, who had six million people watch him meticulously deconstruct Kimbo Slice on the latest episode of the Ultimate Fighter Season 10. (MMA Weekly)
"First round was 44 punches to the face, and then (referee) Herb Dean doesn’t know how to ref, but we’ve seen that before. And then the next round was 22 punches. You could even see me yelling at Herb Dean, ‘Come on, ref.’ " - Nelson, believing referee Herb Dean should have ended the bout late in the first round when he trapped Kimbo in a crucifix. (USA Today)
"Kimbo got up after that round pretty quick and spry, right? If I stop a fight it's because I believe a fighter's not fighting back, because he can't." - Herb Dean, defending his decision. (MMA Weekly)
"That weight was hard to move. The crucifix is not my favorite position." - Kimbo Slice, finding common ground with Jesus Christ. (Inside the Ultimate Fighter)
"You know how Babe Ruth used to point to the fence and say, 'I'm going to hit this home run'?" - Nelson, certified baseball historian.
YOU CAN'T POLISH A TURD
"This is probably, I would say, not hands down, but pound-for-pound a good fight, one of my best fights." - Kimbo Slice, hyping up his fight with Roy Nelson. (Sherdog)
"The fight sucked." - UFC President Dana White (Yahoo)
"Are you going to see Kimbo Slice fight again in the UFC? Yes." - White, influenced by the six million viewers the fight brought in. (LA Times Blog)
"No, never. The ratings do not influence our decision. The guy can either fight or not." - White. Was that ever really a question?
RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!
"There's no reason [I did it]. Anytime I lose a fight that's what I'm doing from now on. I'm just going to jump over the cage and run out." - Former UFC light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin, finally offering some insight into his Gump-esque post fight jog at UFC 101. (MMA 30)
"And I said, 'Look, man, I haven't told anybody, let's keep this on the down low, but the truth is your mom was waiting for me in the back to suck my dick, and you know how good of a blowjob your mom gives, so I didn't want to be late for that shit.' " - Griffin, relaying his response after his father badgered him about his one hundred meter dash. (MMA Fanhouse)
"There's nothing to say. It's not about talking, I thought it was a fighting sport. I'm tired of talking to people." - Griffin. The more surly you get with fans and media, the more I fall in love with you.
"Telling you they put money on you, and 'you're my kid's idol.' I don't want to hear that shit. Get Tom Brady on your kid's wall. Why me?" - Griffin. Awww, you poor thing.
BROCKSMASH! SHANESMASH! ARGGGGHHHH!
"He hasn’t fought anybody. He’s fought (Gabriel) Gonzaga, so I really think he’s 1-0." - UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, degrading the MMA credentials of title contender Shane Carwin. (Las Vegas Sun)
"He’s a tough guy and a wrestler. But he’s a Division II national champion — enough said." - Lesnar
"Brock is not good with math. Thankfully, the UFC and WWE have paid him enough money to get a math tutor." - Carwin, zing! (Heavy.com)
"I know I wasn’t walked through the front door of the UFC with people holding the door for me. I wasn’t fed fights that sell pay-per-views." - Carwin. Instead, you were fed cans to build up your name. Pot, kettle.
"They have trained hard, and to disrespect MMA fighters is disrespecting the sport of MMA." - Carwin. Please politely take your holier-than-thou bullshit and get smashed. Thanks.
DIRTY OLD EGG SUCKING DOG
"I even asked my dog how does he feel and my dog said, ‘Who the hell are you, I don’t know even know you no more. I don’t even know you, why you even talking to me?’ My dog just looked at me, licked his nose, lit up a fart and walked out my room." - Former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, detailing the amount of time he spends away from home as a fighter. (MMA Bay)
"But every time I shoot somebody I see Rashad’s face over and over, like I get to shoot Rashad thousands of times and it’s fun." - Jackson, should probably seek psychiatric help.
"Rampage, has he left? No. He's mad at me. We've gone back and forth with this movie thing, Rampage will fight." - UFC President Dana White (Opie and Anthony Show)
PARTING SHOTS
"So I think it was more that Herb Dean was afraid to lose his job, because there’s a lot of people with a lot of money that can have a lot of influence with his career." - Roy Nelson
"My goal in the future is of course to become UFC champion but I’m not in a rush." - Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi. He'll be a UFC champ by the end of 2011. (MMA Convert)
"I basically made a statement saying that Marquardt and Anderson Silva are my next two fights regardless and I’ve got to beat them both to either become or stay the champ." - Former Pride middle- and welterweight champ Dan Henderson (Sherdog)
"The reality is, I hope Rogers doesn't knock Fedor out. Because I want to get Fedor in the UFC, I want to see him fight Brock Lesnar." - UFC President Dana White, talking sense. (Bloody Elbow)
"I acknowledge their major league status, financial power, the caliber of their fighters, but I do not consider them the number one. I think I am the better fighter and capable of beating their fighters." - Shinya Aoki, very weird and strange individual. (Dream Channel)

What was uncalled for was Big Country throwing Herb Dean under the bus.

I think Herb
does that all on his own,
If I stop a fight it’s because I believe a fighter’s not fighting back, because he can’t., correct me if I’m wrong, but with both arms pinned and not bucking or doing anything to get out from under Nelson is the definition of not fighting back, if it isn’t I don’t know what is.
by proflex on Oct 4, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He means that the fighter can’t fight back because they are hurt. It’s an excuse for sure. If he believed that, he wouldn’t have stopped it in the second round.

While there is
some truth to that, he should have stopped the fight in the first by his own reasoning. I won’t make any bones about it, I personally think Herb is one of the worst offenders out there for bad calls, but why did he decide to stop the fight in the second under the exact same conditions as the first, with half the blows landed. I truly don’t care that he said that there was close to four minutes left in the round. There is precedent to stop that fight in the first, regardless of how Kimbo got up so spryly. Herb has been incredibly lucky in the fact that he hasn’t gotten anyone injured yet, but if he keeps going at the pace he is, someone is going to get seriously injured. I don’t have the examples on the tip of my tongue, but if you go back and watch the fights he’s reffed, he’s had plenty of bad calls in judgment.
by proflex on Oct 4, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you, for the most part. Either a fight should be stopped, or it shouldn’t. Time left in a round shouldn’t come into play (see: Carano vs Cyborg).
That said, ref’s do have discretion and I can understand why he wouldn’t want to stop a fight so close to the bell when no one is taking any real damage. I disagree with his decision, but I don’t dispute that it was his decision to make.
And, I’m honest enough to admit that if it was a fighter I like vs a fighter I dislike, I would have agreed with the non-stop :)

I know this is going to sound
somewhat contradictory, If I was Kimbo I wouldn’t want the fight stopped, and in all honesty there isn’t much damage being done to him at the end of the first, but Herbs judgment is suspect at best. I can’t count the number of times Herb lets people stay on the ground for far too long, or blows to the back of the head without warning or stand up. I think we’ve seen too many fights “decided” by the judges because Herb makes slow calls. I’m not trying to get on bash a ref rant, but Herb seems to put himself in these positions more often then not.
BTW love the sig, I used to watch the tick all the time.

You could say that about any joke I make in these pieces, secular or otherwise.
Without getting into a dissertation on what’s appropriate in a satire piece, this is such a mildly offensive quip that I’m almost more offended that someone would find it “completely uncalled for.” I’m not insulting anyone for their choice in religion, I’m merely making a joke that has HISTORICAL and LITERARY merit. If the joke had instead been “Kimbo Slice, finding common ground with criminals in ancient Rome,” no one would have batted an eye (except those who read between the lines). Jesus Christ, for better or worse, is the most famous victim of crucifixion in the history of the world.
At the risk of playing the asshole staff card, I’d prefer that all DEBATE on this matter in a religious context cease. If you have a problem with it, staff e-mail (including mine) is publicly available on the front page. Discussion of the joke’s hilarity (or lack thereof) may continue.

Yep, and it’s still true. I don’t think one flash KO is a referendum on his entire fighting style.

aoki has been finished with strikes on 3 seperate occasions. that’s enough for me to be convinced. like i said, this is all speculative opinion and we won’t ever know because shinya has made it clear that he won’t fight for the big bad evil ufc
by cagefightonacid on Oct 5, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Convinced of what? That he can be finished via strikes? So can BJ Penn, Kenny Florian, Sean Sherk, and Joe Stevenson. And hey, Aoki’s never been submitted, but Florian, Stevenson, Clay Guida, and Nate Diaz all have. Tyson Griffin has lost twice as many decisions as Aoki! I’m convinced! Of… something!
Not to mention that one of Aoki’s TKO losses was in his second fight in a single night, which never happens in the UFC, and the other recent one was from a knee to the head on the ground, which is illegal in the UFC. But go ahead, keep reaching for reasons to discredit the guy.
by JRN on Oct 5, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i'm not trying to discredit him
i never said he’s not talented and never did i take a win away from him…. don’t take this so personal. i won’t believe aoki would be successful in the ufc until i see it. end of story for me.
it’s funny how you say that those guys can be knocked out when penn, stevenson and florian never have been, but go on to say aoki’s never been submitted like he couldn’t be.

it’s funny how you say that those guys can be knocked out when penn, stevenson and florian never have been, but go on to say aoki’s never been submitted like he couldn’t be.
Penn got TKOd by Matt Hughes. Stevenson got KO’d by Jens Pulver. Florian got TKO’d by Diego Sanchez. My point was not to say that Aoki can’t be submitted, but rather to point out that a fighter having losses of a particular kind on their record doesn’t necessarily speak to their quality.
Implying that Aoki having been stopped on strikes in his career is enough to convince you that he couldn’t make it in the UFC, which by your own account is the real proving ground for LW fighters, seem like reaching to discredit him to me.

but as i’ve said FOUR times now, it’s my opinion! i’m not reaching for anything. i believe strongly aoki would not do well in the ufc.

I’m not saying they’d defend a flying guard pull, just that they’d stand up… I can’t think of a time when someone couldn’t physically stand up from someones guard
by cagefightonacid on Oct 5, 2009 1:41 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
Think about it this way: if it was that easy to just stand up from guard, why would any fighter ever pull guard? Why would any striker end up in any grappler’s guard for more than a few seconds? Why would fighters with famously dangerous guards—Aoki, Nogeuira, Diaz, Maia etc. etc. etc.—be remotely successful? Because their opponents are idiots who forgot that they can just stand up?

no. many of the opponents to the guys you named (maia, diaz, etc) said in prefight interviews that they don’t believe the hype about their abilities, ex. sonnen, macdonald, quarry…. can you name an instance where someone was trying to stand up and couldn’t?? relying on a flying guard pull to earn a submission is a lot to bank on. listen, like i’ve said twice, we’ll never know due to the stance of aoki about fighting in the ufc

i remember this. look, all i’m saying is that it’s a lot to rely on when everybody knows what aoki is going to try to do, and it isn’t a common thing to see a guy unable to get up.

It would be a lot to rely on, yeah. But it served him well in the past, in another fight not a lot of people thought he had a chance to win.

not really the same thing… he was already standing

i tend to think aoki would be smoked pretty badly in the UFC by most of the top lightweights. the game is totally different over here.

He would definitely be hampered by 5-minute rounds and more frequent standups. I don’t know about elbows—people always talk about elbows as though they’re this huge game-changer, and I’m not convinced. But yeah, he’s got a style that seems tailor-made for PRIDE rules. People tend to hold that against him, but I don’t see one or the other rule set as definitive of fighter quality.

What fight are you talking about? Maynard hasn’t lost in his professional career and from wikipedia it says he is 1-0 as an amateur as well.

The Diaz fight on TUF.
In any case, he’s never fought anyone of Aoki’s caliber in jiu-jitsu as a pro.

Maybe Roy acts so bitchy because..
….well….It’s that time of the month for him. LMAO! :)

But seriously....
…Can he be happy that he won without complaining for a change? I know many here are fans of his but his constant complaining is going to turn his fanbase against him one of these days.

to be honest, I love gegard, but I think he was losing against jacare until the upkick, and outside of that he’s been pretty solid

He’s not that great but you how it works: “people love him, so we love him too”…
With that said, he’s definitely not an average fighter…

-I can’t wait to see Gegard in the UFC.
-Aoki talks a lot of shit and gets away with it because of his modest appearance.
-Carwin is such a contrived protagonist, it’s engaging my gag reflex.
-Nelson has a pretty amazing sense of self-entitlement for a guy that needs TUF to get into the UFC.
-I agreed with Herb Dean’s initial continuation, because Roy was slapping Kimbo’s dome like a bongo.
-LOLZ @ crucifix joke.
-Rampage might really retire if he gets a phone call from Judd Apatow.
