Werdum Added To Strikeforce CBS Show, Antonio Silva and Bobby Lashley Currently In Negotiations

Bobby20lashley_medium

We learned a few days ago from Dave Meltzer that Strikeforce and Bobby Lashley (4-0) are in talks to transfer over his contract from Prize Fight Promotions.  Part of the deal includes that Lashley can still fight on TNA and compete in Strikeforce as well, since he also has a TNA Wrestling contract at the same time.  TNA would then be able to promote Lashley as a cross-over star plus give Strikeforce some exposure to their wrestling fan base.  From a recent MMA Fanhouse report, we also learned that they are trying to get Lashley to debut for Strikeforce on the CBS show:

On Thursday, Ariel Helwani of AOL FanHouse reported former WWE superstar and current heavyweight prospect Bobby Lashley (4-0) is currently in negotiations with Strikeforce. Though negotiations have not yet concluded, Helwani cited Nov. 7 as a potential date for Lashley to make his Strikeforce debut.

Now, MMAJunkie is reporting that Fabricio Werdum has verbally agreed to fight on the Nov. 7th CBS show, and that they are also in talks with  former EliteXC HW Champion and current Sengoku participant, Antonio Silva (13-1).

MMAjunkie.com has also learned from multiple sources that another American Top Team fighter, Antonio "Junior" Silva (13-1), may also be in discussions for a potential slot on the Nov. 7 event. However, Silva's manager, Alex Davis, declined to comment on any potential negotiations involving the former EliteXC heavyweight champion.

Via MMAJunkie, another top quality heavyweight  has been added to the CBS show:

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the event that "Vai Cavalo" has verbally agreed to appear on the main card of "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers."

More after the jump...

The Nov 7th card is now shaping up to look something like this:

Doesn't Silva still have...

Doesn’t Silva still have some unresolved issues with CSAC regarding his suspension. Sherdog recently interviewed Silva where he said his suspension is over. However, fighting in Sengoku and “ignoring” the suspension meant that the CSAC might refuse to grant a new license, at least at the end of the official suspension. Right?

by random_asshole on Oct 4, 2009 9:13 AM EDT reply actions

Well the fight is in Illinois so CSAC couldn’t do anything to stop it. But I’m not sure how the Illinois AC works, if he has to get licensed or what.

Yeah, but when someone flaunts a suspension in Japan, American ACs tend to get cranky.

Yeah, do you know if they need licenses to fight in Ill. like in Cali?

I’m sure he does. Licenses are pretty much a universal feature of sanctioning.

Didn’t Antonio and the CSAC release a statement on how Antonio’s test may have been unduly affected by his own medical condition?

That's what I was under the impression of

but who knows, maybe the CSAC just wants to continue being assholish

I missed most of the recent news, especially anything from CSAC. But US ACs tend to respect each other’s suspensions, which is why I was curious. CSAC seemed to say before that they would hold it against him that he fought in Japan while under suspension.

by random_asshole on Oct 4, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Silva’s suspension is over, and even CSAC has admitted they have no jurisdiction over what he does outside the country, so he WILL get his license back.

The only question is, with the card less than a month away, will ISAC be willing to fast track his license or will they drown it in red tape and drag their feet in a bit of petty bureaucratic payback? My money is on petty bureaucratic payback and not getting him licensed in time for the show.

by Steve4192 on Oct 9, 2009 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

According to Silva and ATT, he should be okay to fight now. We don’t really knows whats going on with the SAC’s and whether he can or not, but he says he can.

LOL, oh, okay, well as long as he says he can.

I believe CSAC has admitted the same.

They weren’t happy about him fighting in Japan while under suspension, but they admit they don’t have the authority to do anything about it in an official capacity. Of course, that doesn’t mean they can’t mess with him in an unofficial capacity. They can (and probably will) make sure his licensing process is a gigantic pain in the ass and takes as long as possible.

Don’t be surprised if/when the news comes out that Silva could not get approved for an Illinois license in time to fight on the card.

so who's fighting who

in the lashley, silva, werdum triangle? i would think lashley would be mismatched against werdum, so that leaves silva/werdum. they would have to bring in someone to fight lashley. pedro rizzo perhaps? it’s getting close to a month out so they should be getting these fights finalized so the fighters can get in a good camp, unless they know something we don’t.

The “ignoring the commission and fighting overseas” issue isn’t as big as it’s made out to be, methinks. Belfort ignored his suspension and fought outside the country, paid his fine when he came back, and no one said a thing.

The commissions make a big stink about it, but they don’t have the authority to back up their threats.

by Steve4192 on Oct 9, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Also, just gotta say...

His own manager admits use of a test-booster, which would be very likely to cause a positive (legit or not) PED test…

According to Davis, Silva’s positive test for Boldenone was caused by his use of Novadex, a testosterone-booster that Silva uses to counteract the low testosterone levels caused by his acromegaly.

Really, after that admission, my guess is that he’d have to find a compelling reason why he used a test-booster & was under the allowable limit for test ratios. If he was over – legit reason or not – it’s hard to see how he could argue against any suspension

by random_asshole on Oct 4, 2009 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

but Novadex isn’t boldenone. It just does everything that boldenone does and makes you test positive for boldenone…

worst excuse ever.

by Phildo on Oct 5, 2009 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention he never produced receipts or any proof whatsoever other than his word. Nearly every guy who has ever been busted for steroids has used the same excuse. Stephan Bonnar went the extra mile and produced receipts for his Novadex, but nobody ever made the case that he should be let off the hook.

Fighters are responsible for what they put in their bodies. Ignorance is not a valid defense.

Hmm

well 1 thing that I just saw which is interesting is that in this MMA Fanhouse interview, Doerksen talks about how Jorge Santiago will be fighting on Nov. 7’th

Is there a chance you’ll be Jorge Santiago for the Sengoku middleweight title?

That was talked about before the fight and he’s fighting Nov. 7, and that’s really not flexible. He’s fighting on Nov. 7 no matter what. Probably because of the injury with my hand — I don’t think I’ll be ready for the 7th. Had I not been injured it probably would have been me, possibly. I know he’s definitely fighting on the 7th, and they are probably going to find him someone else to fight, and if my contract gets renewed, then possibly we’ll face off sometime next year.

Is it just some kind of coincidence that both events are on the same night?

I don’t think so, and yeah, it is odd that both events will be on Nov 7th so its confusing since Strikeforce would want Jorge to fight for them as well.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Oct 4, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a pretty solid card. If they can get Mousasi a credible opponent (Fihlo, Arona, where y’all at?) then it measures up with a lot of UFC cards. But so did Affliction…

My only qualms are Fedor’s fight should be for the belt and if Lashley is put on TV it’s just a ploy for eyeballs.

We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.

by Anthony Pace on Oct 5, 2009 1:54 AM EDT reply actions

Eh, Lashley is 4-0 and has a good background. Of course he will be used to get eyeballs, but its not like he will be making his MMA debut on national TV. I heard that Strikeforce wants to develop him more in the Challenger events though.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Oct 5, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep.

If you look past Lashley’s pro wrasslin’ background, the guy is a legitimate prospect. He’s still needs a LOT of work (as his Guida fight proved), but he has a ton of talent and wrestling skill. There is no shame in featuring him on a card.

I’m all for calling out Strikeforce for bullshit like Kim Couture versus Kerry Vera and the Herschel Walker signing, but Lashley is a legit prospect.

and if Lashley is put on TV it’s just a ploy for eyeballs.

I mentioned it in another post...

but another interesting thing is that I’ve heard the ticket sales for the event have been REALLY good. From what I have heard 8,000 tickets were sold and only 3,000 were left!
There was some research here on BE by ufc4 and he guesstimated about 6,500 – 7,500 tickets may have been sold. Either way, it’s pretty impressive knowing that the show is still more than a month away.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Oct 5, 2009 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

I wish I could go but I’m going to Vegas two weeks after so I don’t think I can get the time off work (nor do I have the money for both trips). I went to the SF show in St. Louis back in June and it was a good show. Too bad this one isn’t in StL also.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Oct 5, 2009 7:25 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah...

I’ve heard a ton of fans are coming from 2-4 hour drives to make the event. You Midwest’eners deserve a lot of props for that.

Though, you haven’t seen a show like one where Fedor is the headliner. Trust me! It is bananas the way the audience and the building erupts when Fedor is going for the kill or when you think he is in trouble. Everyone stands up during his fights and you get really involved. Its crazy and hard to explain. Ask anyone who wen to his Affliction shows in Southern Cali.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Oct 5, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, if it was only a 2-4 hour drive I’d be there (like the StL show was) but Chicago isn’t a drive I could make the day of the show, I’d have to drive in the day before, get a hotel, blah, blah, blah. If I didn’t already have my Vegas trip planned before the show was announced (another reason SF really should plan their shit farther ahead of time) I would have gone. I’d love to see a Fedor fight but unfortunately it’s not gonna happen this time, at least not live that is. Fedor and Anderson Silva are probably my two favorite fighters I have never seen live- seen GSP 3 times, Lesnar 2, Jon Jones 3, Machida 1. Please come to the UFC Fedro! Oh well, if I can make a SF show he fights in at least the tickets will be cheaper.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

I’ve seen Fedor twice – the two Affliction shows – and I got to tell you, he’s pretty amazing live.

Rumored December Card:

Nick Diaz vs Jay Hieron (WW title)
Josh Thomson vs Gil Melendez (LW Unification Title)
Frank Shamrock vs TBA
Scott Smith vs TBA
Cris Cyborg (may fight here if she is healthy)

This is what I have heard so far…

by MMASuPreMaCy on Oct 5, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

Scott Smith opponent should be Tim Kennedy. And if Jacare is taking on Lawler, as rumored, that leaves Lindland for Shamrock, hopefully. Now that would be a pretty good card.
And some people didn’t think they’d have enough fighters to put on another event before the end of the year.

by John Nash on Oct 5, 2009 10:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Since you have reading comprehension problems....

Let’s recap what EXACTLY I said. It started with this:

Strikeforce won’t be holding a show for at least 3 months after this, they won’t have any decent fighters left.

My NEXT COMMENT was this:

I was being facetious but I think you see my point, if they were to hold another show before 2010 who would be in it? It would be a pretty weak card.

The December card, as it stands now, would be a ratings disaster. There are 3 fights on the November card better than any fight on the December card. Like I said, I was joking when I said they couldn’t put on another show, it’s just a crap card since they’re blowing their wad on the November show. I don’t blame them for it considering they will need to get great ratings since the card will be on network TV, but let’s not try and pretend like they can put on a great card like that every month because they can’t.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Oct 6, 2009 10:59 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I wouldn’t be so quick to say it is a ratings disaster. Once event will be on CBS, one will be on Showtime. The Showtime event ratings wont nearly matter as much as the CBS card, so whether it gets great ratings or not on Showtime, it is still a pretty good card.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Oct 6, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I realize the ratings on Showtime don’t mean nearly as much as the ratings on CBS, the point still stands that this card is weak and it doesn’t sound to me like Showtime is really interested in working with Diaz, without him it just gets worse.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

Lindland-Shamrock would be UGLY.

Frank’s positional wrestling is dogshit. Renzo Gracie took him down and controlled him with ease, and Lindland’s takedown and control game is much better than Renzo’s. Easy bounceback win for Lindland.

From Sherdog:
“There is no action pending against Mr. Silva nor is any contemplated,” wrote CSAC Executive Officer Dave Thornton in an e-mail to Sherdog.com. “So he is clear to fight in California or any other state as long as he fulfills all other requirements.”

The American Top Team heavyweight was suspended after testing positive for Boldenone following his July 2008 heavyweight championship contest against Justin Eilers at an EliteXC event in Stockton, Calif.

Silva has agreed to a multi-fight contract with Strikeforce with a carve-out that will also allow him to compete in Japan’s Sengoku promotion.
