Snapshot of the Day: Tony Hervey and Takanori Gomi

Photo

Tony Hervey sits in his corner while Takanori Gomi is tended to between rounds three and four of their five-round battle at Vale Tudo Japan '09. In a fight which each man came close to ending - Hervey with punches, Gomi with an armbar - the judges awarded Gomi a unanimous decision via the unusual scores of 47-45, 46-45 and 46-44.

Sources inform Bloody Elbow that Gomi was unable to conduct post-fight interviews due to "exhaustion," and may have been taken to the hospital with a rib injury.

Haven't seen the fight yet,

but from all accounts, Gomi gassed out hard before the championship rounds. He almost ended it with an armbar at one point; Hervey was saved by the bell. But Gomi was definitely the more banged up of the two at the end of 25 minutes.

Does anyone know if the decision was a legit one? Controversial? Sounds and looks like Gomi got worked over pretty good.

I really hope Gomi can get back to his old self, every time I see a story about him I just get depressed lately.

Apparently Gomi’s surprise was that he was going to challenge Masato at Dynamite, but since he wasn’t happy with his fight he didn’t follow through on the challenge. I read that at Japan-mma blog.

I don’t think Masato would take that fight anyway, Petrosyan won MAX and obviously is the biggest test for Masato to face in his retirement fight.

I’m just proud of Hervey for showing he is not just a “nobody”… He is someone to contend with.
