Lutter gets win over Macdonald; could he return to the UFC?

ENOCH, Alberta -- Travis Lutter sent the MFC fans home unhappy as he defeated hometown star Jason MacDonald with a unanimous decision Saturday in the main event of MFC 22 "Payoff" at the River Cree Resort and Casino.

MacDonald, fighting in his home province for the first time in three years following a ten-fight stint in the UFC, could not find the solution on the ground fast enough to defeat the Fort Worth native.

Lutter, fighting for the first time in 18 months, took MacDonald to the ground quickly in the first and controlled the round on the mat. Lutter went from mount to back control and had MacDonald in danger with a rear-naked choke late in the first.

The second round was a carbon copy of the first, with Lutter establishing dominant position over MacDonald and once again nearly securing a choke from the back.

In the third round, MacDonald was able to establish his game plan by getting on top of Lutter. He managed to trap Lutter in the corner of the ring and land some blows, but it was too little, too late, as Lutter earned scores of 29-28 across the board.

"I definitely felt my Brazilian jiu-jitsu was the difference in the fight," said the 36-year-old Lutter, who was the winner of "The Ultimate Fighter 4." "When I was on top, I passed and when he was on top, he couldn’t."

I can't help, but be ecstatic over Lutter's victory. MacDonald is a great win for Lutter and will no doubt help him to bigger and greater things since being his first fight since his two consecutive losses with the UFC.

Joe Silva left the door open for Jason MacDonald to return to the UFC if he won a few fights in smaller promotions, and I don't see why the UFC cannot do the same for an Ultimate Fighter winner.

Simply put

Because he fucked the UFC at UFC 67 by not making weight. Plus if you look at his record the biggest victory of his carrer is against Cote at TUF Finale.

I doubt you will ever see Travis Lutter in the UFC again but if Strikeforce wants to pick him up it would be a solid addition.

I’m completely biased, but I do believe he has improved and I would like to see him have a shot. I didn’t get to see the fight broadcasted on HDnet, and from what people tell me, Lutter was gassed very early on.

With that being said, I do believe Strikeforce would be his best move for him right now. Would be great exposure and would be on national television. Enough exposure that, if he wins the next few fights, that maybe Joe Silva and Dana White can take a look at him.

I think he is way better than Jason Macdonald and Joe Silva gave him a chance at getting back into the Octagon. I don’t see why the organization can’t with Lutter — if he gets his shit together.

You do realize that

this was his first fight in almost 17 months and he is 36.

Look I have nothing personal against Lutter but the difference with him and Macdonald is the UFC never gave J-Mac a title shot and he didnt make weight.

Travis Lutter would have to get some very high quality wins(Sorry J-Mac doesnt cut it) and be very impressive(decisions dont cut it either) to even be considered to brough back.

Had he made weight for that title fight I doubt they would have even cut him after the Franklin loss but missing weight in a title bout is like the ultimate sin.

Did you watch the fight though?

Lutter will have to do a lot more than he did, and in a lot more impressive fashion that he did it, to get himself back in the UFC. I wish him the best, but this weekend was only a small step, not a giant leap.

Goldie:

Would you say that travis Lutter is the Michael Jordan of BJJ?

Joe:

I would absolutely not say that.

I bet Goldie doesn’t know who MJ is. I mean he probably watched him play and maybe even shook his hand, but he doesn’t know who he is.

My opinion...

I am against Lutter coming back to the UFC. He missed weight for a title fight. That should be enough to get the axe alone. On top of that, Lutter is BORING. Sure, he has some slick ground moves, but to me, his style is just painful to watch.

On the other hand, I’d love to see MacDonald back if he can win a few and stick to a gameplan. Grappling with Maia and striking with Rich Franklin were not good plans by any stretch. MacDonald always puts on a show and always leaves the crowd cheering for him.

Lutter was kicking SIlva's ass in their fight.

He deserves an immediate title shot, skipping Henderson and Nate!

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

Lutter needs to do a lot more.

The problem is that not only did Lutter miss weight in what would have been a title fight with Silva, but he also completely gassed en route to a loss versus Franklin. It seemed that Lutter was extremely focused and business-like while competing in TUF. Then, he seemed to fall apart in regard to conditioning once he left. Unlike some, I like Lutter’s game. I wish he could put it together and get another crack at the UFC. However, there’s been a lot of water under the bridge. Conditioning and making weight should be top priorities for fighters. When they fail in these facets of the game it reflects badly on the promotion in question.

In short, I would say that it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility that Lutter get another chance with the UFC, but he’s going to have to do a lot more that earn a decision win over MacDonald (though he’s a very good fighter).

The problem with the perofmance

is that Lutter was hardly impressive. If you judged the fight, under lets say Japan rules, the match would’ve been close. Even though Lutter did clearly win 2 rounds, it was in mount while not really throwing any punches.

It looked like Lutter was pacing himself and got tired anyway… his faults are still there even though he’s an extremely high level grappler. I’m not sure he will ever have a gas tank at 185…

It was a pretty boring three round decision against another UFC washout.

Lutter didnt look in great shape and did gas. His work ethic hasn’t improved.

Mezger’s commentary was painful as he looked for complimentary things to say about his buddy. “He may not look it, but we joke he has orangutan strength”. It’s a bad sign when the color commentary doesn’t have anything nice to say about the actual fight.

I’d like to see Lutter come back to the UFC if he gets in better shape.

And maybe he did miss weight for a title fight – but that was by far the most exciting fight Anderson Silva’s had in the UFC.
