Randy Couture Wants Ricky Hatton to Make the Jump to Mixed Martial Arts
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
UFC Hall of Famer, Randy Couture talked about wanting British boxing superstar, Ricky Hatton to make the jump to MMA. If interested, Randy says he's willing to help the former boxing world champion with the transition:
"I am a big fan of Ricky Hatton. He is a fantastic fighter. I could get him up to speed on the ground wrestling part of it, while he could take advantage of his boxing talent."
"He could make a big difference in the lighter categories... A lot of boxers have trouble putting themselves in the situation where they are going to get choked and taken down. But if he can learn the ways of UFC then he could go a long way. He is a tremendous fighter and has a lot of heart. There is no doubt he could make a tremendous impact with his heart and determination in the ring."
Ricky Hatton, who hasn't fought since losing to Manny Pacquiao, had also talked about switching to MMA in the past:
"It is all action, proper fighting. They are going the right away about it to get people interested. There is a concern in boxing that UFC is taking its place. People seem to get more value for money."
"UFC would be right up my street, I used to kick box so maybe I would be all right."

“How would do you feel about the possibility of being smothered by wrestlers for a fraction of the money?”

he could never learn and compete at the high levels of MMA. he is 30 or so years old with, i believe, no wrestling or BJJ experience. anyone with common sense would take him down and use their many years of wrestling or BJJ to make his boxing worthless and get the W.

same thing could be said about kimbo slice..
he doesn’t even have a fourth of Hatton’s boxing skills.. but lo and behold, Kimbo is in the UFC.

And I’d say that Hatton is at least as marketable now as Kimbo is (definitely when he first started in MMA).

hatton is a megastar in England..
did you see how many people flew out to vegas just to watch him against pacquiao? Imagine having him on a card in his home country..
just fyi: the wembley stadium can hold 90k people for a football match..

The best thing about having Hatton in the UFC would be they could stop propping Bisping up as the face of British MMA.

Yea it was amazing, plus his band that follows him around came out and the crowd signing Hatton songs in unison was crazy.

An obvious point that's constantly overlooked is that combat sports are an inherently dangerous and unhealthy activity.
Another obvious point that’s constantly overlooked is that repetitive concussive and sub-concussive head trauma are clearly bad for the brain. In reality this trauma doesn’t solely come from strikes; its not a secret that you can get KTFO if you get slammed hard enough. Be it the American football, boxing, or MMA, you cannot simply sweep this issue to the side.
People expressing concern for MMA fighters and their brains are generally making the statement “MMA is dangerous, I don’t want to see x fighter permanently injured.” This too often is answered by saying “It’s less dangerous than boxing, MMA fighters take less blows to the head.” That is a serious straw man argument, and doesn’t address the issue at hand.
There isn’t some magic number of times you can get KTFO before you suffer serious injury or have productive years shaved off of your life. Its a gamble. The fighters know this. The fans seem to bicker as to which combat sport will leave its fighters the least fucked up as another point into the grander argument of “MMA is superior to boxing.” (and vice versa)

He’d be real small at LW and probably get taken down at will. If his takedown defense became amazing he could be a force, but I don’t really see it happening.
by omigawda on Oct 29, 2009 4:07 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
it’s a long shot… and yeah, he fights at 140 (and higher against floyd), but he’s not really that undersized compared to other guys in the division. He’s 5’6 and is known to walk around 170-180 during the off season..
to compare, Sherk is one of the bulkier guys out there is also 5’6..Franca is 5’6. Griffin is 5’6. Guida is 5’7, Edgar is 5’6, etc etc etc..

Seeing how much Hatton already “wrestles” when he fights, mastering the ground game should be no problem.

If Hatton does make the move to mma I think he’d be a great addition to the WEC. He’d draw a lot of fan interest, which would be useful if the WEC wants to start doing pay-per-views.
I doubt it happens though.

Hate to be a killjoy and speculate
but didn’t he JUST get ktfo by pacquiao with 16 oz gloves on? i mean I’m a huge pacquiao fan but you don’t even see that many vicious knockouts in the lightweight division of the UFC with the 4 oz gloves :S I wouldn’t see this ending well. however I’d love to see him fight in the ufc so the UK fans can have someone they actually want to cheer for and not dana forcing them to cheer for someone :P
by Hendo_One-Shot on Oct 29, 2009 4:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
did you even see the shot pacquiao threw?
he’d KO a heavyweight with that punch.
also, do you think someone could outbox him? if he makes the jump, (which is unlikely), it’s his ground game that will be the problem, not his boxing.
by Anton Tabuena on Oct 29, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Most people don't see this as big a problem as I do
But boxing in MMA is way different. It’s hard to tell how a real boxer would deal with taking shots from MMA boxing because of the smaller gloves. It will also be hard for him to adjust his defense to the smaller gloves and he may make mistakes in the ring by ineffectively blocking, and against a BJ penn, his already suspect chin may crumble. not to mention hatton isn’t the best boxer (by ’boxer" i mean someone who keeps his distance and boxes).
by Hendo_One-Shot on Oct 29, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You have a point, boxing is different when you’re using it in MMA. The smaller gloves makes defence different, you have to take a slightly different stance because of the threat of take-downs and the need to sprawl… but Hatton is a major talent. His boxing would still be outstanding. All the basics are there, and then some. It’s not like a wrestler learning how to box, which would be from scratch. I’m sure Hatton could make the adjustments, especially if he were in a good camp. It’ll all be about the ground game for Hatton.
I love me some Sexyama!

That extra weight is in padding. So yeah.

by toxic on Oct 29, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Ugh, this is another retarded misconception. You’re adding nearly a pound of weight and are now capable of throwing harder (HINT: THE PADDING IS NOT FOR THE OTHER GUY’S HEAD!).
The tradeoff of using smaller MMA gloves (which don’t have added weight and don’t allow you to throw with as full of force) is that the defensive capabilities of 16 oz. boxing gloves disappear.

8 oz gloves
16 in sparring, some 18, but under 160 the standard pro glove is 8oz total. And they go half-way to the elbow with wrist support.
But yeah, Hatton truly did get KTFO’d.

Well given my knowledge of what he is like outside of his training regiment I believe Hatton gets quite large in weight, roughly gaining 20-30 pounds.
I wonder if he has the cardio to grapple as well as strike or even enough time left in his fighting career where he can learn enough ground game to not get smothered by high school level wrestlers.
Overall the cost far outweighs the reward short of Hatton wanting to give a big middle finger to the boxing community.

I just wanted to throw this out there in regards to the size of the gloves used by boxers. When they train they use 12 to 16 oz gloves, when they fight they use 8 to 10 oz gloves. While they are bigger then the gloves used by MMA fighters, they are not that much bigger. I work with a guy who is a pro boxer. I also saw this on wikipedia.
by billthemarine on Oct 29, 2009 8:41 PM EDT via mobile reply actions 0 recs
right
no pro boxing match I’ve ever encountered uses anything bigger than a 10oz glove. The standard division for 8oz/10oz is boxing’s middleweight division, where it could be 10 or 8. At or above that weight it’s 10, below that it’s 8.
One of the most popular ‘punchers’ gloves is Reyes because they incorporate what’s called the Mexican weave. It’s extremely tightly packed. Many gyms won’t let guys spar with 16oz Reyes gloves because the padding is so tight to the fist. The 8oz Reyes is a brutal glove to get hit with.
