Quote of the Day: Ed Soares Talks About His Approach to Managing Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida and the Nogueira Brothers
"We don’t have a tremendous amount of guys in comparison to some who are out there," Soares said. "I’ve seen some management companies with 60, 70 guys that they’re representing. I kind of look at it as a car dealership. When you look at the car dealership, well, thank God there are Toyota dealers. There’s nothing wrong with Toyotas. They’re great cars, reliable cars, but there are 3,000 of them on the lot. Walk into a Bentley dealership, though, and there are only 12, 15 cars in the place.
"There are two things about that: The guy’s walking in to buy the car, and you know they’re not going to be negotiating price when they’re buying a Bentley. And that’s how I feel about our fighters. You want one of our fighters, you’re going to get a high-performance fighter. I like to keep it that way."
Ed Soares, Manager of Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, the Nogueiras and Junior dos Santos talks to Kevin Iole.
Anyone who's ever had to take a luxury automobile back to the dealership for expensive repairs can surely sympathize with Dana White when he has to negotiate with Soares to get Anderson Silva back in the cage.

Hold up, you’re arguing that Filho is not a lemon? The dude had a good run in the WEC, but as of right now…dunno, hard to argue against that.

Nate, Dana White has never alluded to or said anything crazy about his negotiating process with Soares or Anderson Silva. I believe most of the difficulty is imaginary or media fabrications.
Some folks thinks he’s picking and choosing the fighters he should fight because of his recent statements but his recent Tatame interviews clearly says otherwise. Many people already forgot that he agreed to fight at 205 on short notice in order for the UFC to compete against Affliction.

“Many people already forgot that he agreed to fight at 205 on short notice in order for the UFC to compete against Affliction.”
Against an opponent that was hand-picked to be a perfect style matchup and easy W for his first fight at LHW. And I’d be willing to bet he got a good sized six-figure bonus for it.

Anderson has a good chance of destroying anyone in front of him in the LHW division, so no matter who they put in front of him will probably be considered to be hand picked for him. But it was on short notice and if I’m not mistaken I believe DW said something regarding Irvin being the only one that agreed to fight the spider on short notice.

I don’t understand the example; I always go back and forth with my Bentley dealer over price.

I think Soares misunderstands the metaphore
The UFC is the Bentley dealership and Soares is selling tires. Soares may have the best tires in the world, but they’re still just tires. If Bentley thinks you’re asking too much for them, they’ll just get tires from someone else.

I thought he was talking about winshields…this metaphor thing is tough

Hey, I'll tell you what.
You can get a good look at a butcher’s ass by sticking your head up there, but wouldn’t you rather to take his word for it? No, what I mean is you can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a butcher’s ass… No, wait. It’s gotta be your bull….

Fat guy in a little coat. Well played sir.
Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

What Soares has
Is a luxury in negotiation that almost no other manager has against the UFC: leverage. Its very interesting to see how that affects negotiations for his fighters because we can easily see what happens to guys like Henderson without it.

I don’t wanna hear about Bentleys seeing as I’ll never own one. I want to hear if Lyoto has accepted the Jan date!!! RAWRRR!!!

Lyoto will more than likely fight . . . it just depends if the UFC can make that happen and whether or not he’s injured. He does have a 60-day medical suspension. So I doubt we’ll see the rematch in January but I’m sure we will see it soon.

Soares has a Bentley dealership that has one buyer in the world that is even remotely capable of paying sticker, and one other buyer who’s hoping to snatch one up on auction.
And the guy who has the money doesn’t like paying sticker.

A Bentley with a Bone Spur
I love Anderson Silva, he is my favorite fighter to watch hands down, but I don’t agree with the Bentley comparison. If I owned a bentley, and it had a bone spur, that bentley would be fixed in like one day.

With all this Bentley talk
Where’s logic? He could surely explain this better than all us Chrysler and Honda owners.

I always find it funny when people give Soares more power and pull than he really has. Basically the guy is just someone who thinks he’s got pull but in reality thanks to the iron clad UFC contracts he really doesn’t. In the end these guys are at the mercy of the UFC and whether they like it or not will do what the UFC tells them or they’ll be fucked just like other big stars have when they tried to challenge the UFC.
