I wonder if that guy with gi pants and flashy passes made it through.
Also what a dick move by that one guy near the beginning of the grappling highlight. He basically punched the guy he was rolling with.
Who was that guy with the fucking passes?
Too bad they didn’t have any tape of Goat/Cannon.

This guy He is awesome. He’s the piss drinker.
he only has one KO and it’s by way of punches.. what a shame for a capoeira guy

Watch his brother here. Dudes have skills, but a kick KO is still rare.
that’s his brother? Why do they have different last names? But I can see Vinicios in the beginning of that clip on the left side before the entrance (I think that’s him), maybe their from the same camp but not related?

I’d much rather watch this stuff than the current season of TUF
Bob Arum thinks I'm a white Nazi skinhead even though I'm a brown grad student (with hair)
I clicked into the post to say exactly this. I would much rather watch an hour of tryouts than watch the show. Hell, I’d be happy to watch unedited grappling tryouts. The drama on the show has really turned me off. I was looking forward to this season, but only ended up watching a single episode.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying the show is horrible or condemning anyone for watching it. It just isn’t my thing anymore. I’ll probably watch the last few episodes. Those guys will likely have a few fights in the UFC, so I’d like to get to know who they are before the finals.
I was looking forward to see the striking part of the tryouts. I’m off to see whether there’s another video.
Why do people hate the drama in the TUF series? It’s a reality TV show, no drama and the ratings will drop tremendously. Granted the fights so far haven’t been great, they have been pretty lackluster (I haven’t watched last night’s episode yet on the "supposedly" greatest fight in TUF history), but we have to understand that what brings ratings is good TV, and if there aren’t any drama than the chances of bringing in new viewers to the sport will drop quite a bit. TUF is an invitation to the non-fans of the sport to like the athletes they see on the screen in hopes of having then pay for PPV’s in order to see them fighting in the big stage. I think what’s so bad about this season are the fights that are probably turning off these "hopeful" viewers, not the drama per se.

I agree. That’s why I said that the show isn’t objectively horrible and that I don’t look down on anyone for watching it. It just isn’t my kind of entertainment. That’s all. There’s nothing wrong with watching TUF and there isn’t anything with watching golf on TV, but I’m not likely to do either regularly.
I do want the show to be successful. I get excited when I hear about good ratings. And believe me, if my family were a Nielson household I’d say I watched it.
yeah
I usually try to watch the fights only, but lately they’ve been pretty bad.

The drama is so annoying...
I actually finished grading homework and saw only the fight, and even then I feel cheated. Somehow watching 200+ lb men who are athletes at the peak of physical fitness [sic] disrespect each other like school children doesn’t do it for me. I’d probably rather see an episode of an MTV reality show.
I’m watching a season of TUF after TUF 2 (given that we didn’t get the seasons in the middle in India) and the nature of the show has changed dramatically.
I remember watching the Contender Asia and being impressed at the level of respect that the competitors had for each other. I’ve done a few martial arts (mostly Kyokushin and a bit of BJJ) and respect and discipline has always been a major consideration. Any idea how thes MMA fighters have become the way they are?

I think most fighters are respectful of one another, but you’ll always have a few bad apples in the mix. Even though the "badboys" are a minority on the community, they always get the most attention because people in general (casual fans) likes to watch them more.

Why do people hate the drama in the TUF series?
Same reason we don’t watch soap operas: We’re not women.

my reactions
Stanky!!! Where have you been?
wow, there is a capoeira guy who seems like he knows how to grapple, watch out!
and wtf, they eliminate people before any striking takes place? I understand that you should be well rounded, but some people’s forte is striking with good takedown defense…

it looked like the striking test was going to be after the first round eliminations of grappling, but if there were, than it’s all good :P if not that’s a shame…

Striking is not as exciting as grappling. Not when they are just hitting the mits. Maybe they just showed it because it was more exciting and interesting. But at this point I think they are reviewing there record and watching the grappling to make sure they are not a scrub. I would think they would take a guys strength into account on the first pass of cuts. They are certainly not judging them on the two minutes of grappling alone. If anything personallity is more of a factor then talent, but talent can get you on the show (Roy Nelson).
Absolutely
The 2 minutes of grappling is hardly the main basis on which they are deciding who advances. I’m sure at that point they are primarily concerned about their background, fight record, and experience.
The grappling is, I imagine, more just to get a first glimpse at how they carry themselves, to see who looks like they really want it. Plus if some guy is really lacking in his ground game, that raises a big question mark about the overall quality of his training and commitment to the sport.

i'm very glad that they did
and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a new change from all the other seasons…
it suggests that they’re trying to improve the quality of the fighters.
its getting pretty annoying to see a two guys banging it out on TUF, have the fight hit the ground and then all of a sudden not look like a real fight anymore because one or both guys can no longer defend or attack.
what about potential chucks though?
If you are not that great on the ground (but may be so-so), but can stay away from the ground, should that be placed against you in the try-outs? I understand people who know nothing of the ground game (ie Kimbo, Houston Alexander), but there are people that are great at takedown defense (such as chuck).

Guys with a good sprawl should do just fine rolling. At least well enough to pass to striking given they are strikers. Chuck after all was a wrestler.
The next Chuck is not likely to be discovered on TUF…if he exists at all. Anyone w/Chuck’s attributes would have already been scouted and signed by someone and he wouldn’t be trying out for this show.

I thought they changed that
after season 7? I think you need at least 1 pro fight or something like that now
wow, there is a capoeira guy who seems like he knows how to grapple, watch out!
That was sick, I want him to get on the show just to see how that style works out
Me too, if he doesn’t do the Jinga and doesn’t dance around, and if he has a good ground game, there could be some sick KO’s!

“Not the right personality” ~ Dana
Really?
“You’re a great fighter but you’re boring as shit so we can’t take you.”
God, imagine if they had TUF 15 years ago. I guess liddell, hughes, miletich, sylvia, (additional great fighter with the personality of concrete) would have been shit out of luck.
I think that criticism is being taken a little too far. Every season still has some good fighters that are just boring.
Also, Liddell would have gotten in on look alone. And I don’t find Hughes boring at all. Sylvia and Militich would both have been good enough to get onto the show regardless of personality.
