USAT/SBN October 2009 MMA Consensus Rankings

Rankings-button_medium_medium_medium

The October USA TODAY/Sports Blog Nation MMA Consensus Rankings are now live. Be sure and pick up a hard copy of USA TODAY tomorrow morning to see them in print.

Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA sources to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

Will Yushin Okami fall below the man who vanquished him? Can Shogun Rua rise in the ranks off a loss? What about Cain Velasquez? Will Rampage Jackson's decision to skip out on his fight with Rashad cost him with the rankers? The answers to these questions and many more are in the October USA TODAY/Sports Blog Nation MMA Consensus Rankings

On the wag-dog-tip, how far do you think Carwin and Diego will move up the rankings before their title fights? I think they’ll both end up being top 5 by fight day.

I know we have this whining every week but how does Kampann move above Daley?

by An0nymous on Oct 28, 2009 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

was thinking the same thing

Same goes for...

Fabiano above Mackens
KID being listed while Joe Warren isn’t

With that said rankings are just a group of people’s opinions I’d argue that Mir should be ahead of Big Nog, but again rankings are just opinions…

Um.....what????

I think Shogun should be #2, not 4, but thats just me=/

Everyone has a game plan, untell they get hit.

Most of these rankings haven’t updated since Saturday. I started compiling on Friday.

and the algorithim based one’s will move him down because they’ll just put it in the book as a loss

For instance that fight moved Machida ahead of Anderson Silva on Fight Matrix.

I guess that also explains how Sonnen dominated Okami and yet moved down in the rankings.

by Sliup on Oct 29, 2009 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Sonnen got the win

with no dispute so he made dramatic jumps AND Okami fell dramatically. No one dropped Machida from #1.
I expect next month Shogun will rise to #3, maybe even #2.

Machida was actually #2 on Fight Matrix prior to 104. Now, he’s #1.

Rizzo>Monson

How does beating one guy twice make you a lesser fighter?

by wandyman on Oct 29, 2009 12:22 AM EDT reply actions

the lightweight rankings drive me crazy. Aoki and Hansen would get killed by Sherk, Griffin, Sanchez, Stevenson, Diaz or Guida for that matter. To have those guys so far down the list compared to them is crazy. Having Fedor above everyone else in the UFC is one thing but those guys?

by Joselana on Oct 29, 2009 12:40 AM EDT reply actions

Rankings usually aren’t based on who-would-beat-who judgments.

by JRN on Oct 29, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Isn’t it ranking the best fighters? Don’t you usually assume a better fighter would be favored it win? I don’t see a situation where Fighter A is ranked number 5 but is favored against Fighter B who is ranked number 4. Shouldn’t they be flip-flopped?

Or is the concept more of moving up and down the ranking gradually based on the caliber of opponent and not just a who beats who scenario.

by ChiCubs23 on Oct 29, 2009 8:12 AM EDT up reply actions

It can’t just beat “who beats who” results have to matter some, otherwise there’s no point in fighting, everyone should just stay in the gym and do Fedor/Mousasi exhibitions every few months to show how good they are.

I’m not saying that I agree with that order, but in ring results have to count for something.

12 Marius Zaromskis 35 Bellator/DREAM

That should probably say “Strikeforce/DREAM”.

Also, Josh Barnett should be taken out as an Affliction fighter, most likely WVR fighter suits him better at this point.

Thx.

How is Arlovski Strikeforce?

Did I miss the signing or are you guys assuming because he Affliction paid him to fight for them so they wouldnt have to pay him for not fighting. He fought for Strikeforce once and that was because Affliction paid him too.

Also Jeff Curran is no longer WEC he is Strikeforce.

And maybe this is just me but I think its very sad that Hornbuckle, Hazelett, and Johnson are ranked beneath Serra and Karo.

by bigdmmafan on Oct 29, 2009 5:30 AM EDT reply actions

probably our bad.

Serra and Karo have a lot of intertia holding them up.

Interesting

My comment about Swick moving up for nothing and Daley moving down for something was deleted.
