How Much Does Drug Testing Cost in Japan?

Kochi_no-drugs_medium

Nightmare of Battle has them:

The managing director of the Japan Muay Thai Federation, which is one of the organizations under the new Japan Martial Arts Federation, talked about this new federation.

One thing he said is that doping tests per person cost 370,000 YEN (~4,000 USD). However, organizations affiliated with the Japan Olympic Committee only have to pay 30,000 YEN.

So that's $4000 per person if you're not affiliated with the Japan Olympic Committee, and around $330 dollars per person if you are. Let's say a Japanese promotion had 11 fights on their card. If they wanted to implement anti-doping tests, that would mean they'd have to pay $7260, or if they're not affiliated with the JOC they'd have to shell out a whopping, $88,000.

Seems pretty steep for just any promotion to have to pay for, especially in a country where it isn't really required to do so. We all know how much financial troubles these promotions have had since their "MMA bubble" burst, and to have to pay extra for anti doping tests, it kinda makes you appreciate what promotions like Sengoku is doing huh?

1) It is very nice to see that Sengoku, Shooto, Pancrase, and ZST will take part in testing.
2) You never test each fighter. You test fighters in a title fight and then do random tests. It would be really tough for commissions to test every fighter on every card.

good point on number 2.. but the issue still stands, they aren’t really doing well financially compared to promotions in the US or to the time of PRIDE, but they’re still doing it, and it’s really nice to see that..

What does it mean to be “affiliated with the Japan Olympic Committee?”

I’m not sure what it exactly means, but if it makes the test drop that much, more orgs should do it.

Must Read If You Don't Get The Post

The new Japan Martial Arts Federation, which is under the umbrella of the Japan Wrestling Federation, held their inaugural press conference today. Figures such as WVR PR Kokuho, Sumo wrestler Asashoryu, Hidehiko Yoshida, and Hayato "Mach" Sakurai were present.

The president of this new Federation, Tomiaki Fukuda, said that MMA and the like has spread around the world, so Japan must not fall behind. That’s the reason for this new Federation.

As mentioned previously, pro organizations WVR, Shooto, Pancrase, ZST, and 9 internal amateur organizations (Combat Wrestling, Muay Thai, BJJ, etc.) are participating in this.

The first action that the Federation will take is to send 8 fighters to the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Hanoi in Vietnam at the end of this month (for Muay Thai, Belt Wrestling, and Kurash). After that is the World Grappling Championship in Florida in December and of course the Martial Arts Games in Beijing in 2010.

Also, this federation, while clearing questions such as weight classes and rules, is aiming at an All-Japan MMA Championship.

I think that this All-Japan Championship will have a limited rule-set if it happens (since All-Japan tournaments usually don’t last more than a day) but with an annual championship it could definitely make MMA look more like a real sport in Japan. Especially with Shooto and Pancrase involved and the Federation saying that they will be strict on drug testing. Of course a weeked of MMA tournaments also sounds like a good watch and future Japanese stars could emerge.

Well then I hope dream and sengoku get on board. It will save them money and bring an air of legitimacy have something resembling a sanctioning body.

Sengoku already does.

Sengoku will be in already, doubt DREAM will be jumping on this any time soon.

Very nice. I wonder what it will take for the JMAF to be recognized by the Japanese Olympic Committee.

I really hope Sengoku doens’t get rid of the stomps if they change their rules to align with the other orgs, I love watching them. Reminds me of the old Pride days.

I believe Pancrase still allows PRIDE rules? Someone can probably correct me on that.
