Rankings compiled by Richard Wade.

November is the big month for heavyweights. Ok, well it's not quite as big as it was going to be until yesterday, but it's still big. #1 Fedor Emelianeko will be fighting #8 Brett Rogers on Strikeforce's November 7 CBS debut. A number of things will be decided at that fight. Most of them have more to do with determining the economic viability of the enigmatic Russian star as a headliner on an American network TV broadcast. If Rogers does the unthinkable and upsets Fedor...it won't just be Strikeforce's business model that will be in tatters -- the heavyweight rankings themselves might implode!

#2 Brock Lesnar was going to face #6 Shane Carwin at UFC 106 on November 21. Instead they'll meet at UFC 108 in January. It's kind of a drag that we only get to see Lesnar fight one time in 2009, but hopefully he'll fight twice or even three times in 2010. A Carwin upset won't be the shattering blow to the UFC's fortunes that a Fedor loss will be to Strikeforce, but it certainly will have business implications and will impact the rankings.

#3 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira staked his claim on yet another career revival by thoroughly dominating #9 Randy Couture at UFC 102. It's unclear what will be next for Big Nog. He wants a title shot, but it seems clear that he'll have to win at least one if not two more fights to earn his chance at gold.

#4 Frank Mir will face #16 Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 in December. This is a crucial test for Mir. He has a chance to confirm his re-emergence as a top tier heavyweight, but he could just as easily slip back into irrelevance in the decision.

Speaking of irrelevance, #5 Josh Barnett apparently won't be able to reapply for a license to fight in the USA for at least a year due to his continued troubles with the CSAC. There is a definite shortage of top heavyweights plying their trade in Japan these days so it's not apparent how Barnett can remain relevant in exile.

#7 Junior Dos Santos seems to be cruising towards a title shot after three straight wins in the UFC. He'll be facing #15 Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 108 in January, but presumably is in line behind #11 Cain Velasquez for the title shot even if he wins. Expect Velasquez to rise in the rankings next month as his UFC 104 win over #17 Ben Rothwell was not accounted for in these rankings.

No word on what's next for #10 Andrei Arlovski beyond a recent jaunt to New Mexico to train with Team Greg Jackson.

#11 Alistair Overeem picked up a couple of tuneup wins in the last month. Including a win over the (very) unranked James Thompson at DREAM.12. He's now talking about wanting to fight Fedor in April. Both DREAM and Strikeforce are possible promoters (er co-promoters) for that bout. But Alistair might have to wait in line for his shot at Fedor.

#13 Fabricio Werdum will be taking on #22 Antonio Silva on the Strikeforce Fedor vs Rogers card on November 7. That bout is clearly designed to establish the winner as the next opponent for Fedor. Expect the winner to take a jump in the rankings.

Star-divide

Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings.

We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

I’m surprised Semmy is even eligible, can’t recall him fighting MMA for years.

There’s only one site ranking him, but they rank him fairly high.

Wow. That’s pretty weird.

Semmy v. Mo at Dynamite last year was under MMA rules, but that’s his only MMA fight in quite some time, and a victory over Mighty Mo certainly doesn’t give you too much MMA credibility in my eyes.

Is Roger's beating Fedor that bad?
If Rogers does the unthinkable and upsets Fedor…it won’t just be Strikeforce’s business model that will be in tatters

Granted the current business model may be to ride the indestructible cyborg, but is a win that bad?
Roger’s is an affable American. If he knocks out an undefeated Russian in spectacular fashion (I’m assuming knockout is the only way he wins) on what will probably be the highest rated MMA event ever isn’t that potentially a good thing.

I’ve always felt the best thing for promotions is a trilogy of fights anyway so an immediate Fedor/Rogers rematch would probably have more buzz than Fedor Werdum or Fedor Overeem.

Obviously the knockout would give Dana White a tempting opening to go after the quality of Fedor, but I’m not sure its too bad a result.

In the short term

a win by Rogers would give Strikeforce a good bump for some media coverage, a second fight, and possibly even a third match. After that, it would be a disaster for StrikeForce and potentially for Fedor as well.

by rzor on Oct 29, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can you elaborate?

Obviously for Fedor a loss is bad. Once he can lose to Brett Rogers he really loses credibility and the ability to leverage the UFC. I don’t understand why if they get a good bump short term that isn’t sustainable? If they can continue to sell their top few fighters than they can continue to have CBS shows…PPV whould be the big wild card of course.

I think the problem with a Rogers win from a long term perspective is that Rogers is a bit older and one dimensional, and the chances of him being a long-term top guy are kind of slim. I’m not saying the guy is not good – he clearly is. But I think if he wins you run the risk of him then getting beat by Overeem, who could then get beat by Werdum, etc. Basically you have a potential for the top guy to be constantly turning over.

I think the drop in interest in the UFC LHW division is a good example of the fact that fans like to see a champion on a run – not a hot potato belt. Fedor is a guy who could beat Rogers and build some interest, beat Overeem and build more, beat Werdum/Silva and build yet more to the point that casual fans begin to get behind his “greatest MMA fighter on the planet” issue.

Obviously there are a lot of variables at play here, but in the long term, a strong #1 is good for business, and you have a better shot at Fedor being that long running #1 than Rogers.

Brett Rogers is only 28, while Fedor is 33

Rogers is still relatively young and probably will be able to fight at a high level for a couple years.

So Rothwell gets dominated and moves up two spots?

Ranks were put together before that fight.

Right...

due to newspaper deadlines BE can’t really drag our feet waiting for major events to complete before compiling. Or rather…Richard and Nate can’t wait.

yeah

since Sonnen beat Okami, we waited until the last minute on the middleweights but weren’t able to wait on the other divisions.

I think we’re going to try to time the rankings such that this isn’t as much of an issue in the future.

Barnett is impressive...

in that he’s been able to stay in the top five without facing another top 10 heavyweight since Pride was putting on fights. What really speaks to the relative shallowness of the heavyweight pool is that Rizzo, Yvel, and Monson, Barnett’s last three victims, are ranked as highly as they are.

I understand that rankings are funny creatures by nature, but some scenarios cause you to scratch your head, anyway.

this division is just really really thin

The UFC’s investment in the division should eventually flush out alot of the Monsons and Rizzos.

I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t slid further down since the Affliction catastrophe. I know he technically hasn’t lost, so the computers won’t move him, but I thought more websites would have dropped him down after the steroids mishap.

No Cro Cop at all is odd too. Sure he’s past it but I don’t think he loses to the likes of Rizzo, Monson and Pe De Pano.

I really want to see Andrei Arlovski fighting again. (Preferably in the UFC) I think he could put some of these one dimensional young guys in their place.

As long as they don’t hit him in the face.

by swells2048 on Oct 29, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes he has been KOed in his last 2, but it was against Fedor and Rogers. There is no shame in being knocked out by either. He needs to get his mind right, his hands up and 1 or 2 wins and someone should pick him up!

As usual the HW division is a wreck. AO ahead of Cain is wrong, Semmy rated at all is retarded, Rogers at 8 is good, Barnett at 5 is still way way high.

1 Fedor
2 Brock
3 Mir
4 Nog
5 Carwin
6 Dos/Rogers
8 Cain
9 Couture
10 Werdum/AO/ take your pick, it gets messy here on down.

1. Fedor
2. Brock
3. Nog
4. Carwin
5. Cain
6. Overeem
7. Cigano
8. Mir
9. Couture
10. Werdum

In case anyone wonders...

…Monson’s got a fight lined up against Travis Fulton at a regional show in Alabama on December 12.

Anything happening with Yvel, now that he’s licensed in Nevada?

by Vlad on Oct 29, 2009 5:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I easily put AO top 5.

by Killuminati on Oct 30, 2009 3:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I disagree strongly.

I like Ubereem actually, but top 5 he is not. Just doesn’t have the accomplishments. I think he’s a lock for low top 10 though. I’d have Fedor, Dos Santos, Noguiera, Rogers, and Carwin above him for sure. If Mir looks impressive against Kongo, then I think I’ll be sold on his hype and believe he deserves to be above Ubereem as well. And all that is leaving out Barnett, who I think would trounce him. Make it happen, Japan!
