Josh Koscheck to Co-Headline UFC 106
Josh Koscheck announces via Twitter:
I got some big fight news for me. I am fighting nov 21 in Vegas. Co main event!!! Haha it's on baby!!!!
So it appears that the curly headed one is out of his fight against Mike Pierce at UFN 20. No word yet on the opponent but for the co-headline fight it has to be someone of decent name value. It clearly isn't GSP, it isn't Alves, it isn't Fitch. Who do we have left here?
[UPDATE] Sherdog is reporting that Koscheck's opponent will be Anthony Johnson:
Josh Koscheck and Anthony Johnson have verbally agreed to fight each other at UFC 106 on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas, Sherdog.com has learned from a source close to the bout.

Unless they do a rematch with Paulo Thiago, I think we are looking at Paul Daley.
Hughes didn’t want to face Koscheck or any member of AKA with a full training camp, let alone a months notice.
This shirt is "dry clean only", which means it's dirty.
That’s what I thought with regard to Hughes. Daley is certainly interesting.

Paul Daley?
I thought he was gonna face Condit at 108 I guess its possible they scrapped that match up but if its co-main event I would guess Hughes but I doubt it.
Maybe not even then.

If
Koscheck is smart enough to take Daley down. Which I think he will, but you never know with all these wrestlers getting stoked with their standup
That said, Kos isn’t a dumbass, and should lay down a Lytle- esque beatdown on Semtex

Last i knew he was injured, besides I’m not to sure that fight would be good enough for a co-main event.

I have to believe it’s either Hughes or Rumble. Nobody else makes any sort of sense. I was gonna say Baroni, but he’s supposed to be fighting @ 185, and isn’t main-event worthy anyways. But I’d like to see it regardless…

Baroni is totally main event worthy!

Not after the beatdown Smokin’ Joe put on him… I’d have to see something big out of him, like when he tried his comeback in Bushido to consider him for a big time fight again.

off topic but Baroni needs to be at 185 and possibly 205 he gasses in 30 secs from having all that muscle and cutting all the weight
A name not thrown out there but i would like to see is Hornbuckle, the man loves to finish fights and has a black belt in intensity, whats not to like? Just not sure if enough people know him well enough to be the co-main event.
On a side note, anyone know about Hieron’s contract with StrikeForce? Wonder if they locked him up.

That would be sick to see Hornbuckle but whats his contract situation like?? I know the Japanese are open to other orgs but if he’s still under an open contract with Sengoku wouldn’t the UFC consider him not an option?
I’m not 100% sure what his contract situation is like, been trying to find out but apparently it’s a pain to find, what i do know is that he is not on the next two Sengoku event’s and I haven’t heard any info on him getting a fight anytime soon, which is enough reason for me to start hoping he is free for the UFC =).
And no if he is still under contract with Sengoku then the UFC wouldn’t bother putting him on their PPV’s.

Akiyama at the weight he should be fighting at to compete with the weightcutters of the UFC. On a side note Anthony johnson is probably even bigger than akiyama at middle weight… think about that for a sec
Maybe he’s Canadian. We apologize when other people step on our feet.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
Out of all these names
I can’t imagine it would be anyone but Hughes. Kos has virtually no drawing power, so to have him co-main event needs an opponent of considerable stature. No one, not even Nick Diaz has that capability except Hughes.
Koscheck vs Anthony Johnson is Official
Josh Koscheck and Anthony Johnson have verbally agreed to fight each other at UFC 106 on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas, Sherdog.com has learned from a source close to the bout.
Koscheck is good, but has a questionable chin.
I think Rumble rocks and drops him. Which is fine because I’ve always thought he was an ass ever since he was on TUF 1.
Even if he wins via first round KO you don’t do a title shot for johnson. Him and gsp is potentially a gigantic fight in 9 months its boneheaded business to do it before his name means anything.
by Michael Rome on Oct 28, 2009 4:34 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
you are probably right
but we all know what happens to the ufc’s best laid plans the majority of the time. if rumble wins by viscious ko and the ufc tries to put him in another fight to build him up that could backfire, and they would lose an exciting fighter (who is extremely marketable imo) as a number one contender.
yeah, then he gets submitted by justin hazzlet. If you can rely on one thing in this business it’s that building up to a specific fight never works. Ask Randy and Crocop.
If Zuffa had to do that mess all over Crocop would have gotten a title shot ASAP.
GSP was rushed into fighting Hughes and their 2nd fight was bigger than their first.
People thought shogun was being rushed. Nobody thinks Swick has a chance even if he crushes Hardy.
You just got to make the best available fight everything else always works itself out.
For every Crocop there is a Machida. Actually there are way more examples of the build model making sense.
If Shogun had won it would have been terrible for business because he was rushed. Wins a 5 round affair all casual fans thought sucked. They got lucky with the controversy and NOW Shogun can be a star, but if he won 3-2 on leg kicks, it would have been shit for business.
Johnson is not even remotely close to peaking. He’s still in development. There’s no reason to rush fights. The only reason they do this now is they’re so desperate for main events because they have started being stupid and doing 2-PPV months.
Meltzer had a great piece in the observer a few weeks ago about trending data and stars suggesting that besides Machida, the UFC created no new stars in the last year, making it their worst star-making year in a long time. And it’s true. The real reason you have struggle coming up with main events all the time now is they haven’t been able to create new stars with such dominant champions. They’re just rushing guys into main events.
Johnson-GSP coming off Koscheck is no more buys than Swick-GSP. None. Some hardcores would know he has more of a chance, casuals would probably believe more in Swick. You give it some time and it can actually draw a little. It’s almost as retarded as giving Cain Velasquez a title shot right now.
by Michael Rome on Oct 28, 2009 5:23 AM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
Should also note it’s a false dichotomy to talk about the rush model and the Crocop Gonzaga fiasco. There’s a way to build stars without booking stupid fights like that one. Funny thing is UFC is lately doing the worst of both worlds, mainly because of talent shortages.
by Michael Rome on Oct 28, 2009 5:28 AM EDT up reply actions
More was done for Shogun with that decision loss than if he would have beaten 10 eric shafers to death. 20 eric shafers if he won.
Stars are made in championship fights. look at the history. Chuck, Randy, etc… Stars are made when they win and lose in big fights.
AJ, Swick Koschek, fitch… the idea is whose the best and most credible fight. Building up fighters how most see doesn’t work in this business. They need to be place
Stars are never made unless they’re in big fights. You can look at meltzers trending all you want but you need to also look at who were involved in the big fights.
As more and more of these guys get spaces as co-main events more than once and ultimately in the main events… more and more stars will be produced.
“spreading yourself thin” is also increasing the size of the vacuum.
If you look at every draw you’ll notice there’s a direct correlation with the amount of big fights they’ve had. Brock is the anomoly for reasons we both know.
from an equity perspective Crocop would have gained more by losing to Couture than Gonzaga. Same with couture – he would have gained more by beating crocop than Gonzaga. and thus UFC benefits more.
Fighters need to age in the markets mind and the best way to do that is by participating in big fights. Personality, performances, etc… dictate how many big fights are needed to get a fighter passed a certain threshold – but the big fights are the key.
Losing in this business is only relative to who you lose to. Fitch losing to GSP is worth more than beating another 20 guys.
Right now the money fight is Koschek v GSP.
I think that the UFC right now is in a critical position, much like a business that decides it’s going to expand without having the infrastructure in place to do so. If they do it right, MMA is going to get bigger and develop interest, more kids will go into MMA and there will be a bigger talent pool to choose from as the infrastructure grows with the organization. So right now seems to be that critical time where the UFC is expanding it’s product, but there isn’t the steady inflow of talent to fill the products. It’s a very shakey walk, I think the UFC is going to make it through, but for the time being, they have to bite down on the stick and have some not-so-great PPV’s, or free ones that don’t make them as much money.
Agree with you Rome
Over the course of a year, if Johnson keeps knocking people silly, this could be one of the most anticipated fights in UFC history. The extra year also allows AJ to add some more to his toolbox, so that he isn’t all flash and pomp when he goes up against GSP.

Is this really a good idea? Johnson just missed weight because of any injury, and turning him around so quickly doesn’t seem like the wisest decision.
The injury was from his previous fight so he didn’t have enough time to rehab, this fight he should be fine to make weight.
I doubt he would have taken the fight if he was worried that again he’d miss weight when he knew how pissed everyone was he missed it this time.
At least Kos isnt holding out for Hughes!
I think Johnson takes this fairly easily as long as he gets in a good camp & doesnt miss weight.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
This can go one of two ways:
1) Kos tries out some of his mediocre kick boxing and gets KO’d quickly
2) Kos goes old school and shoots early and often and GNP’s his way to a win.
I completely agree with your assessment sir. I hope Kos comes out with his lunch room brawl punches and gets KO’d personally.

I wonder how Josh Thomson and some of the other guys that
are linked to both Koscheck and Johnson are going to handle this fight.
I know that Johnson isn’t a full-time AKA fighter, but Koscheck and Thomson are, and Thomson did corner AJ at 104. Is Thomson just going remove himself from both guys’ training camps?
finally watched the johnson/clementi fight
johnson held his own on the ground, better than i expected. as long as he stays calm and doesn’t throw flashy strikes that get him taken down, he could make things interesting with koscheck.
johnson desereves this fight
cant wait to see this fight. i want to see johnson move up the ranks with a good stand up game and a wrestling background. hes definitly overdue for that next step in his career.
