the guy shouldn’t be celebrating anything. He came in 6lbs over and who knows how much he weighed in the fight. Its like beating on a child and then bragging about it. I’m not a fan of this guy

i'm pretty sure
he wasn’t bragging about it.
He was quite possibly the most down to earth fighter at ufc 100’s fan expo. The fact of the matter is yoshidas team took the money, and yoshida should have been prepared to fight with a much larger man anyway. I’m sure whether he made weight or not by the time he got in the ring he would have weighed the same any way you cut it.
And I’m sure johnsons learned his lesson. Trust me he is less then happy that he lost out on well over 60 grand.

It's his responsibility...
as a fighter to make the contracted weight, trying to justify it by saying he would have weighed the same is asinine. He should either make weight or fight at Middleweight. He is a professional and should act accordingly.

So let him try to make weight at his next fight before you crucify him, geez.
I heard no talk of people wanting Alves to move up after coming in at 174.

There was plenty of talk of Alves moving up. He’s been busted for diuretics once before and he grossly missed weight.

I'm not crucifying...
but this is not the first time ‘Rumble’ has missed weight. I was responding to how JaeeJaee was defending his not making weight.

You’re right, but the first time he missed was a short-notice fight. If he misses for his next fight, with a full camp, and no injury to bar his training, then we have a major issue. In both Alves’ case and Rumble’s (this time) there was an injury involved.

He came in 6lbs heavy. Come fight night thats 6lbs heavier than what he would have been had he came in at 170lbs. Thats a huge difference, especially with a guy like Johnson.

That is not necessarily the case
thats a huge assumption that if he started his cut sooner his fighting weight would have been different, we have no way of knowing, you can assume the worst or you can assume the best. Either way yoshida would have faced a much larger johnson.
And last time he didnt make weight I’m sure it didnt run him 60 grand.
Also last time as has been mentioned the fight was on short notice.
lastly anthony johnson does not regularly cut downf rom 220, that was just the case this particular time.
I am not defending missing weight, I am not endorsing it. My point is While he missed weight, the other side accepted the fight, as unfair as it may be. THis call to arms for him to move up in weight or crucify him because you think he’s some bully is riddiculous. it happens, some fighters miss weight. Cutting weight is a part of the sport, as far as I’m concerned he’s got one strike not two… if he misses weight again, then there’s an issue, but he didn’t seem like he was doing backflips because he won the fight.
Must be mighty comfortable looking down at us from your vantage point.

He didn’t “learn his lesson” the last time he did it.

It is time for him to move up in weight. I like him a lot — and I don’t doubt that he is one of the most down-to-earth fighters out there. He seems like a genuinely nice guy, but he should move up in weight, especially since as he gets older he’s going to have even more trouble making weight.
This is the second time he has failed to make weight. Six pounds, too, is a lot. It probably didn’t effect the outcome of the fight, but it still cheapens his victory — and I’m not even talking about the money he lost.
That’s just my two cents for what it’s worth. Thoughts everyone?

not a fan. cutting 50lbs is either dangerous, or he’s grossly exaggerating. either way, not a fan of it. dehydrating to that extreme, then getting hit in the face with 5 oz gloves is not healthy…..period. it also hinders overall performance. i don’t need a phd to know that.

He was probably 220 at his peak when he was inactive. Like he says, he will keep his weight at 195-200 going forward in order to be ready for a fight on short notice.
