Laying the Groundwork for the 2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards
We're still two months away from year's end, but it's time to start thinking about year end awards. Last year, I hastily put the idea together, and I think it ended up as a smashing success. I'm hoping to build on that with a little more time and planning this year.
The 2008 awards, in one word, were chaotic. I just had you guys send me your top 5 for each category, and put together a spreadsheet with the results. This year's ship will run a little tighter.
For starters, I'd like to narrow each category down to five nominees. Nominees will be determined either unilaterally by myself and/or the BE staff using input from the comment sections. We will use the Instant Runoff method for voting. I will explain the voting process in greater detail in the future, for those too lazy to click the link.
So why am I posting this now? Last year, we had a few candidates that might have had a better shot had they been brought up sooner with appropriate media linkage. The next two months will be fresh in our heads come January 1st, so it's time to start looking back to the beginning of the year, and uncover all the lost diamonds in the rough.
In addition, last year we had 14 categories (listed below). I'd like to get that to an even 20. So put on your brainstorming caps and think of some ideas.
2008 Categories and Winners:
Fighter of the Year - Rashad Evans
Fight of the Year - Miguel Torres vs. Yoshiro Maeda
Card of the Year - UFC 92
Personality of the Year (in the vein of TIME's Person of the Year) - Dana White
Promotion of the Year - UFC
Knockout of the Year - Rashad Evans vs. Chuck Liddell
Submission of the Year - Dustin Hazelett vs. Josh Burkman
Breakout Fighter of the Year - Brock Lesnar
Upset of the Year - Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Performance of the Year - Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Story of the Year - StandGate and EliteXC's Downfall
Disgrace of the Year - Junie Browning and TUF 8
Commentator of the Year - Joe Rogan
Fight Camp of the Year - Jackson's Submission Fighting

Maybe a stupid idea but you could diverge from the Fighter of the Year (keep it, of course) and have maybe like Submission Artist of the Year, Knockout Artist of the Year, etc. Also, maybe Best Local Show, Best New Promotion, Best Fight Poster. I dunno I could list off a ton of terrible ideas.

I wish someone (some group) would poll for MMA blog of the year. I dont know about you guys’ numbers or traffic or anything like that but iv never heard anything negative about BE on this site or outside of it.
Iv been reading for a few years and since joining iv cut down drastically on the other sites/blogs I visit. Same for most of my friends. when they want to get more into MMA ill give them a few places to look but they always end up choosing BE as their MMA source.
I know its off topic, but just thought id make my thoughts known.
Great idea on another year-end awards list btw. You should include some categories just for fun. “Hyperbolic comment of the year on BE.” “Failed prediction of the year (logic).” etc…

FL is often harsh with BE
But that’s kinda their job – BE is the over-acheiving first child, while FL is the attention-grabbing baby of the family. So it goes.

I actually saw this happen in a local amateur title fight. Both guys were winging punches and at one point one of the guys grabbed the cage with one hand and KO’d the dude with the other. They stopped the fight, woke the dude up, and gave him the belt.

6 ideas to get to 20
1.) Best Free Card of the Year (Spike UFC delays, UFC Fight Night, TUF Finales, WEC, etc.).
2.) Worst Fight of the Year
3.) Underachieving Fighter of the Year
4.) Most Entertaining Decision of the Year (Sanchez/Guida?)
5.) Best Victory Celebration
6.) GIF of the Year (Marquardt’s crazy combo against Gouveia)

Comeback of the year. For a fighter who was off the MMA map, maybe on a losing streak…whatever and now actually made himself relevant. Not a comeback in a fight..but in a career.

For example...
when Alistair Overeem won the Strikeforce title and went on his little run to a top 10 heavyweight (regardless of what we think of him now) he would have been a good, solid candidate since on big stages to that point he was mostly a guy who underachieved and never could win important fights.

You’re both wrong. If holding your fire on a defeated opponent is the standard, then Pat Berry is the clear winner. He showed every bit of restraint as Nate and Mousasi, and he did it in a fight where:
1. Both fighters took damage.
2. It was a grudge match with a long back story.
3. He was fighting for his job.
4. His opponent refused to touch gloves.
5. He was fighting with a crazy amount of emotion as evidenced by the way he cried after the fight was over.
If I recall correctly, he was also pretty classy in defeat after he got straight embarrassed by Tim Hague.

This is really off topic and i apologize
but did anyone read the article about Anthony Johnson’s missed weight on mmajunkie? He was saying stuff about how people want to nuthug because your good but if you make one mistake they won’t cheer for you… I don’t know about anyone else, but i personally thought it was disgraceful to see that fight… it looked like a freakshow to me, he was so much bigger… and that he blamed it on his injury, and sitting around and getting fat… i’m sorry bro but that is YOUR fault alone for eating and not maintaining weight, and for taking a fight if you don’t have a chance of making weight… read the article if you want, i don’t know i was a big fan of Rumbles and now i feel myself have a pretty big distaste for him

Johnson’s was an actual KO, Berry’s was a TKO, so yeah Johnson had the better KO. I also feel that Johnson should have thrown an apology towards ‘Zenko’ for not making weight, while he was apologizing to the UFC brass and fans.
by CSKit on Oct 27, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And this is just speculation on my part, but the huge gap in his weight to me is indicative that he stopped even trying to cut the weight a long time before the fight. He didn’t look dehydrated at the weigh-ins and he had to be at least 190 pounds at fight time. I think in situations like this the commissions need to step up and say that this fight is unfair. If they won’t license certain guys because they’re inept, they shouldn’t allow mismatches like this to happen.
by Ahhhoki on Oct 27, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don’t know, his face looks very gaunt to me, but in any case if you’re trying to cut water from 192ish to 170 sorry bro, it ain’t happening

I think if he had decisively beaten Shogun like the other two, no questions asked, but with the amount of venom flowing since the decision, no way people will vote for him, deserving or not.

Anderson Silva- Knocking out Forrest is no biggie.
Lyoto Machida- 2 big wins early on but he’ll never win this for obvious reasons.
Brock Lesnar – Knocking out Mir is no biggie.
Fedor Emelianenko – Only 1 win but it was cool as hell. If he looks like Satan against Rogers this would be a good pick.
Gegard Mousasi – He shoulda won last year. Babalu’s a good win, Soku is ok I guess. I dunno, maybe?
Mike Brown – If he beats Aldo he’d be in the lead I reckon.
Marius Zaromskis – Amazing run of KO’s, he hasn’t fought the top WW’s yet thoguh.
Georges St. Pierre – Two really good wins. Good pick.
The winner of Brown/Aldo should be in the running as well as GSP, Mousasi, Machida, and Fedor. Shogun’s a great candidate for most improved or best comeback or whatever, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him on this list either.

That’s like saying Sokodjou should have been fighter of the year when he KO’d Little Nog and Arona. Pulling a couple of wins out against mid top-10 competition does not a fighter of the year make.

He has 4 wins this year. Three of them in devastating fashion.
You’re wrong to knock “mid top-10 competition”, as though that were somehow a bad thing. You’d still be wrong if you said " top 25 competition", which is more accurate in regards to Zarmoskis.
He’s not in the UFC, so fighting the very best in the division isn’t an option that’s available to him (yet). I’d say, though, that dominating the division in a top-tier promotion definitely qualifies him for serious consideration.

To make a more competitive category, rather than having something like Robbery of the Year, I like the idea of doing an award for the moment that made you most embarrassed to be an MMA fan, for whatever reason. I’m sure somebody could come up with a nice snappy name for it, but this could feature Beebe-Easton, Choi-Canseco, Sylvia-Mercer, and even Kyle Maynard all in one cringeworthy category.
