"I want to fight BJ Penn again. He knows I’m the unique guy of this division able to knock him out. It would be the biggest champions fighting. Imagine how this match would be … but it’s not close to coming true. I don’t want to talk over UFC … Mr. Dana White is a great manager and I respect him but is a person hard to deal with. I’m not an art martial beginner, I am a MMA champion. What about him? What would he be?" Takanori Gomi talking to Tsutaya Online. (HT MMA Mania).

BJ beat the hell out of a nearly prime Gomi and would murder the current version.

Gomi is the best lightweight of all time but in 100 Gomi v. Penn matches, Penn takes 99 of them.

If not Gomi, then who?
I honestly can’t think of anyone who has accomplished as much at LW as Takanori Gomi. BJ is the better fighter, but he spent a large chunk of his career bouncing around weightclasses and another also suffers from inactivity. There is no way you can say he has accomplished as much at LW as Gomi has.
If there was a career achievement award for LW, Gomi would be the winner hands down.

Penn. He crushed Gomi and can’t be penalized for inactivity because he was fighting up. Not only at WW, but he won a round from Lyoto Machida. He crushed Gomi so bad when they were both in there prime that I don’t see how it could be Gomi. If it were closer then perhaps the argument for Gomi might hold water.

It’s no secret Gomi and the UFC have been negotiation forever but have never been able to make a deal. This is the reason Gomi and Strikeforce (also Affliction) were in talks earlier this year.

LOL
I meant to say in the states again, since he has wanted to come back since he left Sengoku but hasn’t found an offer he likes.

This issue sounds financial. If UFC is not gonna pay Gomi the money he thinks he deserves, what makes you think Strikeforce will?
by The Bronzeville Bully on Oct 27, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They wont, but they will offer him something.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Oct 27, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They will offer him shot at the lightweight title, haha…
by dancingChicken on Oct 28, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It seems that Strikeforce’s offer with a win bonus, a title challenge, Showtime (tv, sponsors, etc.) is the best. However, because of the base pay they haven’t come to an agreement yet. If Gomi signs with Strikeforce, he will probably have his first fight on their August 15th or September events.
A Gomi signing by Strikeforce could also set up a rematch of his epic battle against Nick Diaz from PRIDE 33: Second Coming.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Oct 27, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
What that sounds like to me is that Strikeforce wasn’t willing to pay what he wanted either.
by ufc4 on Oct 27, 2009 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hence why he signed to fight for Affliction 3, though, he was considering this offer bad. He just wanted a one off fight for the most money, and Affliction gave him that.

Imagine the PPV #s!!!
Everyone knows Gomi has huge casual fan appeal here in the states. Dana would be a fool not to pay him anything he asks.

Gomi Wants Penn Again
God bless Gomi for hyping himself, but let’s be honest: Gomi hasn’t beaten anyone worth a damn in about three years. The difference between Gomi and Penn is that Penn is still fighting the highest level of competition and, aside from his recent forays up to the Welterweight division, BJ has been successful and largely dominant.
Gomi should beat someone to prove that he’s even worth brining into the UFC in 2009. Then, he can get in line behind about a dozen other more qualified fighters and work his way up to a rematch with BJ. If he does that, I’ll happily give my hard earned money to watch them throw down.

When I was a kid I’d fish Halibut. We’d catch it, club it, and put it in the freezer. Every so often 25 minutes later some not quite dead halibut would start thrashing around in there and we’d have to open the lid, grab the club, and beat it down again and again until it stopped. This sort of reminds me of that last ditch flop by those halibut. Thanks for listening. The memories.

Hm. That’s one powerful dead halibut.
by Chris Nelson on Oct 27, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Punches thrown from below the hips do tend to be powerful, but I have the feeling they wouldn’t be as effective against Penn.
by casey manrique on Oct 27, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
An uppercut to the left pectoral and some kind of weird flimsy right hook downing a no-name does not a BJ Penn killer make. This statement is clearly a death rattle.

Sorry, I’m being a douche now. He was a great fighter in his prime. He’s a legend. But that part’s over. He might be able to knockout the odd can, but he ain’t gettin anywhere near BJ.

Not sure if calling Nakakura a can is accurate…
by CSKit on Oct 28, 2009 4:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s definitely not. He was a Top 5 lightweight in Japan when Gomi beat him into semi-retirement.

Sorry, the part about him being a can was just more hot air blowing out of my ass. I had no idea who that guy is.

offtopic but halibut are really dumb and friendly looking. I feel bad when I eat dumb looking animals, so I stick to Tuna and Salmon.

(And: insinuating? Really? About a guy that is suspended for admitting in his blog on a major MMA site that he threw a fight? WOW. Sorry. Bizarre.)

There’s no fighter bashing on this site. Needlessly taking a shot at a fighter’s looks/intelligence is fighter bashing, regardless of whether you were only doing it for the sake of a lame pun. If you don’t like it, take your act somewhere else.

I said I was sorry
And I meant it.
I just don’t feel like the line is as clear as you do. There’s an entire post jam-packed with folks calling Rampage a moron, an egomaniac, and delusional. Suggesting that Sean Salmon might be a little goofy looking when I’m rocking this ’do:

…seems pretty tame to me. If you see what I mean.

For anyone who hasn't seen the fight
the Rumble on the Rocks series is actually pretty cheap on DVD, and has some decent fights. I found the five disc set for $10.00.

Not to pile on the Gomi negativity here, but...
It would be the biggest champions fighting.
Really? Because Gomi is the champion is what exactly? Yeah, hype is hype, but this is pretty silly.

Gomi and Penn are the two most successful and accomplished lightweights in MMA history. That might be what he means by “biggest champions.” I’m sure he’s aware he no longer holds a title.

FWIW, I met Penn at a meet ‘n’ greet in Vegas last year, sometime between the Sherk and GSP fights. I wanted to ask him something that he probably doesn’t hear often, so I asked if he would want to fight Gomi again. He looked a little surprised to hear it, and then said he would love that fight again.
Just throwing that out there.
