Lyoto Machida Sustained a Hand Injury From His Fight Against Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua
There might be some potentially bad news for those expecting an immediate rematch of the UFC 104 main event. From a tidbit on Sherdog's conversation with Lyoto Machida:
"It’s time to celebrate the win and relax from the hard training routine. After that I will check what happened to my hand (it’s hurt), if it needs some surgery, then analyze my mistakes in this fight carefully with my family to restart my training routine. No matter who is my next opponent, I’ll give some rest to my mind and body and return 100 percent to the training to get ready for my next challenge. If it’s Shogun again, I’ll study his game and make a different strategy to please the fans with a better fight."
Lyoto also went into detail about the controversial fight against Shogun:
"I thought it was a very even and tough fight. I had the opportunity to see the fight again and I thought I won four rounds and Shogun took the last one. Some people say he won the fourth and fifth round, but for sure I won at least the first three rounds. The American commentators were pretty much biased. If you see the fight without audio, you will probably see a different fight.
"Shogun was a great opponent and had a nice strategy. He deserves all my respect as a fighter, but I was superior. I had three or four chances to finish the fight, and he never put me in danger. I didn’t get (dazed) at any moment of the fight, but I put him in danger three or four times. He kicked my legs a couple of times, but he wouldn’t knock me out with that.
My leg started to hurt in the fifth round, and I was very upset that I couldn’t knock him out as I had planned. I had two chances where I felt him really (dazed), but I lost it and I get really upset when I leave the decision in the judges’ hands... Anyone who has a mouth can talk. I respect his opinion and I’m ready to fight Shogun or any other challenger UFC decides, but I would like to say that this fight was not judged by myself, my father or Anderson Silva. This fight was judged by professionals, so I’m pretty much comfortable with the result.

No matter who is my next opponent
why does he keep saying this? DW already said it’s Shogun again, but he keeps on saying “whoever will be my next opponent”. Just doesn’t feel like he wants another go at Shogun.

maybe cause nothing has been officially offered and signed yet?
maybe cause not everything Dana says is gospel? (see Rampage-Forrest 2, Fedor in the UFC)

DW never said Fedor was in the UFC
and Forrest/Page II was never offered either…

although
I do agree that he’s quick to jump on conclusions sometimes, such as the Hendo and Marquardt title belt promises. But until there is anything to the contrary, it’s Shogun in a second go around.

you missed the point.
Dana white said Fedor will get signed. Dana also said there will be a rematch between Forrest and Rampage.. neither happened.
and Lyoto-Shogun hasn’t really been officially offered. so while it’s probably gonna happen, it’s not yet final..
that’s probably why he said that, and not because he’s scared.

no where did I imply he’s scared, I find it funny though that the idea has in fact been presented and will most likely happen. I’d say no fighter is scared of another, otherwise they would not be fighters, but I do see him thinking it might be better off having a different opponent than Shogun for another belt defense right now. Just my opinion.

Why would he? Shogun hurt him more than anyone else has in the UFC. Machida – like every other champ – wants to keep his belt. A rematch with Shogun is a very real threat to Machida Era.

Of course they all want to keep their belts. That doesn’t mean that they don’t want to continually prove themselves against the top contenders. I’ve never seen Machida act in a way that indicates he’d prefer easier fights to guarantee his belt.

As I said elsewhere
he isn’t really injured. The x-rays were swayed by the commentators.

Yeah this is gold. It’s actually funnier the second time than the first.
I think there’s a couple postings on Sherdog where you can post this too. MMAmania I hear eat this up too so you should probably bandy it over there too.

Damn right Lyoto! No apologies necessary…and so much for the devastation supposedly wrought by the legkicks…

right
‘cause you think he’s been 100% honest there huh? 4th round is proof the leg kicks did damage, 5th round is BS.

The leg kicks definitely hurt, and slowed him down as the fight went on, but some folks were talking like he’d be crippled for weeks, that he should apologize for the decision, that he should deliver the belt to Shogun on his knees, and the like. And yeah, I do think he’s being honest. You might think he’s deluding himself, but do you really think Lyoto is a dishonest guy? I definitely do not. You were also pretty skeptical that Anderson would be part of his team for that fight. Do you have some special Brazilian knowledge that these guys are liars? I can see you questioning Soares, since he’s a manager, but yeah, I definitely think Lyoto and his family are honorable people. And I think the same of you. You were right about Shogun when I certainly couldn’t see it, and you haven’t pitched an enormous fit either, though I’m sure you’re pretty upset with the decision.

No, I’m not saying the Machida’s are dishonest, that is a much strong of a word. But telling light lies are usually done by pretty much everyone, no one can be 100% honest, not even a monk. As a fighter, and one that got the decision, why would he want to put wood on the fire that the critics have created and say his legs are badly damaged and he can’t walk? He’s obviously going to play politics (which I don’t see anything wrong with it), he has an image to keep. He is one of the least hit fighters in the game, one can take what he says with a grain of salt, because we all know too well what happened Saturday night, and I guarantee his legs hurt and probably can’t walk normally as he’s used to (take it from a guy who got hit in the legs a few times).

shogun was hurt several times, but he didn’t capitalize :S He’s lying, but if he’s not, what kind of killer instinct is that?

I hope Machida does not go to the same doctor as Anderson Silva. You know, the one that was going to operate on his elbow, oh wait, no, there’s no operation, stop the press, there IS going to be an operation…
