Lyoto Machida: "I Promise to Go Better on the Next One"
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
"We had three judges on the fight, but it’s not me who decides. The judges saw the fight and that were the points.
If the [UFC] decide for a rematch, of course I’ll do it. I’ll go back home and study the whole fight, everything that passed and put another strategy on. We always learn and this fight was more a lesson. Of course we always want to please the fans, everyone who supports. I promise I’ll train more to please everyone and get better… I promise to go better on the next one."
--UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Lyoto Machida, speaks to Tatame about his controversial battle with Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua

Poor guy sounds like he’s really broken up about this one, he had just found a huge fan base and popularity but then it all got pulled out from under him due to this fight and the fickle nature of fame.

Seriously, he went from everyone hating him, to everyone loving him, to everyone hating him.
Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.
sometimes you lose in victory, win in defeat
Machida’s followers made a 180 and so did Shogun’s
This also happened to Marquardt against Leites I think, he pretty much won in defeat
(in defeat, I mean officially, because you all know how I feel about the decision :P)

Personally I’m a Machida fan and did not make the 180 on him, because I thought he was just figured out by Rua. I did however make the 180 on Shogun and gained a new found respect for him and see him more now as a tactician and a brawler

that was mostly in general. and Shogun is a tactician, but he’ll braw sometimes too (with effectness, not just throwing punches for the sake of throwing them), he’s the whole package really. damn, I cannot talk bad about that guy, I’ll stop now :P

Prior to his fight against Thiago I had an entire section to myself on the Machida train. Then he won and it was like, “hey, its good to see some more people getting on board” but this place is a lot more crowded than it used to be.
Then he beat Rashad and the place was packed to the brim and people were in my seat claiming to have been there the entire time.
Now that he has been proven to be human I have room to stretch out again.

I can’t say I’ve been around since the BJ Penn days but I can say that I have been to his last four fights in person (combination of fandom and timing).
Shogun is my second favorite light heavy (now that Wanderlei is sort of a middleweight) and he put on a great show. I can’t wait to see how much energy this injects into what could have been a stalled division.
Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.
I have been a fan since seeing the Soko fight as one of the first events with my friends where we were just there for the ride and not really understanding the nuances of the sport. That fight led to our nuanced fight prediction of “always pick the Brazilian guy” for the next few events.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
I want Lyoto to dominate LHW, but I feel that Rua won the fight, and that Machida will know Rua’s tricks of war next time…

Agreed.
Everyone seems to assume it’s only Machida that can craft a master plan for victory, but as evidenced on Saturday, Shogun is a remarkably intelligent fighter himself. In the rematch, I think Shogun can get a lot closer to finishing him, if not actually finishing him. But I don’t discredit Machida’s ability to pull a few tricks from his sleeve, either.

The next fight should be really interesting based on seeing which fighter can make the better adjustments.
So far Machida hasn’t had to make too many fight to fight, and Rua made some major ones.
It will be interesting to say the least.
Now, of course, the million dollar
question is how does Lyoto adjust? I’ve read in several places that defending against leg kicks was an inherent weakness in Machida’s defense/offense. Is that true? I also saw somewhere that Rua says he plans to use the same attack, which would be foolish, I think. Regardless, although this isn’t an apology, is certainly sounds like one, and really wasn’t necessary.
I’m gonna take a gamble and say that Rua’s leg kicks are the best in the division, on par with Vera’s and Alves’. That said, I think that for the most part Machida has been quick enough to step away from most leg kicks, as he did successfully many times against Rua. The thing was, Rua seemed to be anticipating Machida’s evasion and aimed his kicks further in, especially after adjusting from the 1st. I personally don’t think that anyone in the division lands this many leg kicks on Machida than Rua. The torque on Rua’s leg kicks is flat out intimidating.
Alves is not in the division.

Yeah I know that. But Rua’s leg kicks remind me of Alves’. I think that maybe Alves’ are the best in the UFC, with maybe only Anderson’s being better (but he doesn’t use them very often so it’s hard to tell). When Alves flings that friggin leg out it’s like some kind of plexi whip or something. Then when it flies at his opponents head, yikes. Those things should be illegal they’re so dangerous.
And here’s his interview with Sherdog.com:
"I thought I won four rounds and Shogun took the last one…. The American commentators were pretty much biased."
"…I had three or four chances to finish the fight, and Shogun never put me in danger. I didn’t get (dazed) at any moment of the fight, but I put him in danger three or four times. He kicked my legs a couple of times, but he wouldn’t knock me out with that."
Machida also addressed UFC President Dana White’s statement that he thought Shogun was the winner.
"Anyone who has a mouth can talk. I respect his opinion and I’m ready to fight Shogun or any other challenger UFC decides, but I would like to say that this fight was not judged by myself, my father or Anderson Silva," Machida said. "This fight was judged by professionals, so I’m pretty much comfortable with the result."
damn
Machida is starting to sound like Anderson Silva, only problem is that usually Anderson Silva is right, whereas Machida… wrong

I expect to see the same shogun but a new machida for the rematch. I don’t really see how shogun can do better, I think he did really great already, maybe dominate the clinch and improve his defense, if possible.

many thought he wouldn’t do any good the first time around, I guess he’ll just have to prove the critics wrong twice :P

Shogun is in a bad position. He probably feels – no, he knows he has to finish Machida now. The second time around, there’ll be no hanging back thinking he’s got it in the bag.
I love me some Sexyama!
personally, I think he’ll continue to try to counter Machida, and when it comes to the 4th round he’ll turn up the heat looking to finish. He played it safe because he thought did enough to win (which is how I see it), but next time he’s not going to take any chances.
Machida is a god
I now drink my urine daily
If he made any mistake that was it. And that’s a huge error (obviously).
I’ve played on many a basketball team that tries to conserve a lead and stall after getting ahead a couple of points. It always backfires. Every time.
The problem here is that this is a fight against Machida, he could not afford to be too aggressive and make a mistake that he could lose the fight. He had the right plan, but since the judges didn’t like it, he’ll go for the kill next time because he’s not going to lose the fight two times the same way.
Machida is a god
I now drink my urine daily
I understand that, but in the 5th round, and maybe even the 4th, it was clear that Machida wasn’t going to be putting Shogun in danger anymore. Well it was clear to me at least. Why else kick his friggin legs so much. It’s to damage his abilities so that you can attack him without worrying about their ability to counter you effectively. Plus, at that point Shogun had taken several straight lefts to the face and it didn’t seem to faze him a lot.
If your strategy is simply to keep scoring with leg kicks, you’re strategy is also, by default, leaving it to the judges. He should’ve known that the decision wasn’t a gimme. Surely even the most ardent of Rua’s fans can at least admit that the fight was reasonably close.
It isn't true

I don’t recall him favoring either hand as if it were broken. Not seriously, anyway.
I really don’t get everyone being upset with MACHIDA for winning. Is he supposed to hand over the belt because a large section of fans and Dana White think Shogun won? Be pissed at the judges but take it easy on Lyoto

It’s calmed down a LOT since Sunday. Still a bit raw, but it’s much calmer.
I agree with Lyoto. Lyoto put Rua in danger. Rua didn’t put Machida in danger. If Machida had just been willing to pull the trigger, he would have at least not let people argue he lost the early rounds, if not finish it.
What Machida needs to learn is that sometimes he can’t just keep sniping until the perfect opportunity comes along to finish it. He’ll have to take chances next fight.

You beat me to it. So many people are quick to turn on Lyoto. I don’t know why, but it’s not Lyoto’s fault. It’s not like the judges were his family or anything. He fought. He won. Did he look like the Lyoto from the last few fights? No. But that’s due to Shogun’s great strategy and ability to implement it. But Lyoto is not at fault. It must be hard for him to see some of his newfound fans turn on him so quickly.

I think the so called “intelligent” mma fans that float around the comments here and the various other blogs and message boards put way too much stock into what the fighters say to the media.
Maybe 5 years ago when there was no money and no one cared they could all be truthful and “real” but now it’s a game of pr. Everything said in public needs to be taken that way. And that’s not even to mention the amount of confidence that is necessary to be a good fighter.

It seems as though the only way machida can win a fight now is if he only gets hit once every 2.5 rounds…… I this being the Anderson Silva syndrome when Anderson didn’t knock out someone in Highlight reel fashion, it was unacceptable and he was starting to lose it and he shouldnt be considered top 5 p4p anymore

I haven’t bothered commenting alot lately since people are so serious about this subject. I thought Lyoto won rounds 1-3. I also think it was extremely close and it was foolish of him to just give Shogun those last two rounds, where Lyoto pretty much just stopped doing anything of note. I’m a fan of Lyoto, yes, but I’m no fool. The way people judge fights in their minds varies from person to person, so yeah, I could see how some people would say Shogun won every round, and I can definately see how Shogun could have won the fight period. But I agree in Lelands assesment that although Shogun was stalking, some people may have taken that for “aggression” but how I’ve explained it to people is this. You can’t just walk forward, into a guy who is notorious for using lateral movement and making his opponents come at him, and then counter with one kick while he lands 2 or 3 shots.
In my mind, just moving forward, but not pulling the trigger, is simply a man walking around a ring. Not octogon control. Especially not against Lyoto. Now this is not to say Shogun never initiated an exchange, he did, but Lyoto had to use that (left?) straight many times to start off an exchange, and one thing I’m suprised people overlook is how often and accurately Machida would throw that punch.
No matter who won that fight, the rematch is likely to be Epic. Shogun is going to come out like a man with a purpose, knowing in his heart that he can’t just let this fight go to the judges again. Lyoto is coming back to prove that he should be the champ, that he can defeat shogun decisively. Thats good enough for me.

I’m more of a Machida fan than a Shogun fan, but you’ve got to be excited that Shogun proved himself and then some. Prior to this fight 90% of MMA fans were treating Shogun like he was irrelevant to the 205 division. For example, the hosts of Sherdog’s beatdown radio shit so much on Shogun that when Lyoto’s manager Ed Soras appeared last week, they made him make the argument for why Shogun could win.
Agreed
After getting choked out by Forrest and his ridiculous fight with Coleman, I was one of the people who thought this was a gimme fight for Lyoto, and laughed at Shogun thinking he had a chance. Boy was I wrong!
And I am very excited for the rematch, and hope that we actually get one.

Oh no, thats not what I mean at all. Obviously this was caused by Shogun, but Lyoto virtually stopped anything he had been doing in previous rounds. Even the telegraphed straight Lyoto had been using rather effectively disappeared. Definately not trying to discredit Shogun, he fought the best fight anyone ever has against Machida, and win or lose, needs some serious praise. He went from losing to Forrest, then that iffy preformance against Coleman, to KTFO’ing Chuck and solving Machida. Thats a helluva come back.

This post is right on..
Very well articulated IMHO. I struggled to come to terms with Machida losing. And I feel he did lose. It was extremely close. I kept feeling myself wince as Machida’s left landed on Rua, only to have Joe Rogan comment that Rua’s leg kicks landed to Machida’s body at the exact same time. I started to have the sense that I was not seeing the fight as it was, but how I wanted it. I need to re-watch it. Machida’s only chance may be to try and take him down, or move laterally to his right. Or maybe he needs to employ tsuru ashi dachi and go Macchio on his ass.

I don’t mind the conspiracy theorists, since believing in conspiracies clearly helps them enjoy the sport more. I just wish that when their conspiracy theories are definatively disproved, they’d man up and admit they were wrong. For example:
The UFC is protecting Rich Franklin
The UFC is protecting Anderson Silva from Okami
The UFC is trying to screw Machida out of a title shot
The UFC will never let two non-Americans fight for the title
The UFC will rig TUF so that Kimbo fights at the last possible moment
The UFC will rig TUF so that Kimbo gets an easy fight
How has the Okami conspiracy be definatevily debunked?
