Anderson Silva: "I think Lyoto won all five rounds"

Talking to Tatame after UFC 104, in which he joined Lyoto Machida's corner, Anderson Silva had the following to say about the fight:

It was a competitive fight (...) Shogun fought in his rhythm and was very well prepared, he's very experienced, but Lyoto's technique is far superior and he won in an undeniable way. (...) This fight is in the past now, he's the champion, a great person, and a great athlete (..) In my opinion, he won all five rounds. Shogun had a nice strategy attacking the legs but it wasn't enough. It's not the trainers that decide the outcome of fights but the judges. Lyoto won well, now its time to get back to training as soon as possible.

Umm... I'm a HUGE Lyoto Machida fan, that guy is actually one of my heroes, but even I don't think he won all five rounds man, come on. Is this just the Spider trying to support his team mate?

Maybe Anderson Silva’s value as a training partner is overrated when it’s Lyoto…… (In contrast, look at what Okami said regarding his training before the loss to Chael Sonnen.)

I can see it going for Machida (within the time limit, anyway) and I STILL wouldn’t give rounds 4 or 5 to Machida.

doesn't really surprise me

anderson is a guy who is obviously all about loyalty

by yngjzy on Oct 27, 2009 1:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

This is Anderson supporting his buddy, nothing else.

yea i actually think thats pretty cool, i really like the nog/anderson/lyoto team and how they back each other up no matter what

He's good friends with Lyoto

and angry with Shogun about fighting a former teammate. It was predictable.

This is not surprising. Anderson also thought his fight against Thales was awesome.

THAT FIGHT WAS AWESOME!

The part where Anderson puchched Thales legs was the most awesome thing I have ever SEEN!!!!

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

Well that settles that

I’m with Anderson. Discussion over.

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

No need to really look into this as anything more than a loyal friend (Anderson) supporting his buddy (Machida). I really hope that others don’t put too much stock into this quote.

Exactly. I’d do the same for my close friends too. It’s so hard to be impartial in situations like this.

a good buddy/friend will & should tell the truth

i don’t put too much stock into what anderson says b/c i don’t give a crap what he thinks frankly; this only makes me like him a little less b/c of all his other crap (of which i have previously posted re: his hemming and hawing about who he will or won’t fight and thinking he put on a good performance against leites and cote). i used to be a big fan of his and still respect him as a fighter but everything else not so much any longer.

if you’re a good friend to someone and/or a good coach-trainer, you shouldn’t just “support” your good buddy/student. you need to tell the truth about their performance and mistakes, etc. swelling their heads w/ false info will not do them well in the future imo.

again, this remark by him isn’t a big deal in so much as i really can’t stand anderson lately and my annoyance at him is just coming out w/ my comments about it. but truth be told, u don’t speak in half truths to your training partner when his future depends on his own improvement as well as strategic and technical advancement. i hope machida says he’d fight anderson already.

FWIW

Lyoto claimed that both Anderson and Yoshizo talked to him after the fight backstage about what he did wrong… I just hope that Anderson’s advice was actually valid/useful for the rematch and that he told/will be telling Lyoto something completely different in private.

This comes off as a strange parallel of “Rua’s corner according to Kevin Iole.”

by Chortles on Oct 27, 2009 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You’re reading too much into it.

A good teammate would tell the truth in private but absolutely defend them in the public. Saying he won all 5 rounds is a bit over the top, but it’s crazy to think anyone from his fight camp would come out and say Shogun won the fight.

What else was Anderson going to say? “I thought Lyoto lost that fight and didn’t win all the rounds.”

Could have just said

“I thought that he won, but at the same time I can see why people thought he didn’t, and we’ve since discussed what went wrong in that fight and how he can improve and win the rematch.”

by Chortles on Oct 27, 2009 3:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Polarity

You honestly expect him to say that he can see why people thought he didn’t win? That’s poppycock. Maybe you could say he should have conceded a round or two or something, but come on d00d..

Okay, snip that part and the remainder (“I thought he won, but I’ve advised him as to what he didn’t do right and how to win the next fight”) would have been perfectly fine.

Anderson > Shogun in Muay Thai

If Machida can get some extended training time with Silva leading into the rematch, that’s going to help A LOT, especially now that they’ve seen Rua’s strategy.

Poor Shogun.

After hes done with Machida and has the belt Anderson can be next
WAR SHOGUN
he has shown he pwns counter strikers

I hope so...

Shogun beating Machida and then fighting Anderson would be just plain awesome.

In pure Muay Thai, sure

but I tend to think that Rua would hit takedown after takedown, and wouldn’t get subbed by Andy either

What could rua

do in the takedown department that henderson or Marquardt couldn’t or in grappling that leites, lutter or jeremy horn couldn’t?

The fight would come down to standing and A Silva would win. Unlike Lyoto who had unanswered questions Anderson has had an extensive career and he has had a much more active last three years against opponents who mattered much more when he was fighting them. Anderson wins that fight, please don’t let your bias toward him and a great fight on shoguns behalf blind you to the fact that you will be lucky to see another striker like anderson in the near future.

The only other fighter who awe’s me like anderson is St. Pierre. Shogun is a hell of a fighter, but his power wont scare anderson, and his sub par takedowns wont be enough to stop anderson from any position.

Anderson Silva Thinks Lyoto Beat Shogun
Anderson Silva: “I think Lyoto won all five rounds”

But you also think that you were in no way at fault for that abortion of a match against Thales Leites, so maybe you’re not truthful 100% of the time.

I think it’s just a little thing they have going on, Anderson tells Lyoto he wins every round no matter what actually happens, and Lyoto tells Anderson that he looks fantastic in fluorescent pink jumpers.

by Barry619 on Oct 27, 2009 9:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Obviously he’s going to back his friend up. I don’t see why people take inter-friendship evaluations into consideration.

by Ahhhoki on Oct 27, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Backing him up and saying Machida won the fight is one thing and fully expected, saying he won all 5 rounds in a public interview just makes him look crazy.

by Barry619 on Oct 27, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh that’s just a teammates job. Like if you’re in a guy’s corner, you’re obligated to say his opponent is tired after the first round. It’s just one of those rules in life.

Things like this are the things that make me hate Silva.

Seriously, he has gone from being someone I was neutral about to someone I cannot stand. Great fighter, seems like a real jerk to me though.
