Brock Lesnar Pulls Out of UFC 106 Title Fight With Shane Carwin

Kevin Iole has the story:

UFC president Dana White confirmed the news to Yahoo! Sports. White said Lesnar has been ill for more than three-and-a-half weeks and unable to train. With the bout at UFC 106 less than a month away, Lesnar was forced to postpone the title defense.

"He said he's never been this sick in his life," White said. "He said it's been going on for a long time and he just hasn't been able to shake it."

Dana White is having a terrible autumn. Between Rampage Jackson walking out on UFC 107, the ugly outcome of the UFC 104 headliner, and this it really looks like someone's voodoo curse on the UFC has taken hold.

That or the UFC would rather save Lesnar vs Carwin for their New Year's Eve card.

Salvage possibility

If Lesnar is out for an extended period of time, I wouldn’t mind seeing Big Nog step in to face Carwin at 106 if he can get ready in time. This would be a great fight for #1 contender (something Carwin should have done anyways against Cain).

by neyvit on Oct 26, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Carwin vs. Cain for the shot? Nog vs. Carwin interim (as suggested above)?

Or just move up with Shogun/Machida rematch and make that the main event?

by gzl5000 on Oct 26, 2009 4:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Theres no way Machida will be ready to fight Nov. 21. He probably can’t even walk right now after those leg shots, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is medically suspended for a while (for precautionary reasons).

by neyvit on Oct 26, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Machida deserves time off

I don’t need to see the same fight with the same game plan. Give Machida some time to see if he can think of a way to solve those leg kicks. Do the Machida Shogun fight in January or something.

That's a buzzkill

Maybe Dos Santos/ Carwin title eliminator, for after Nog/ Lesnar?

If they could get Brock/ Nogueira for the End- Of- Year show, that would be huge. And JDS/ Carwin would be a great scrap. In the meantime, let Cain keep improving- maybe Velasquez/ Gonzaga?

but Dos Santos wouldn’t have to wait too long, even in that event IMO. Nog looked great against Randy, and very well could have 1 last title run in him, but I truly think that he’s in the falling action of his career

I’m of the opinion that this is a dream come true for the UFC in some ways. They WANT to establish the new years card as the yearly mega-event and they are lacking true mega main event for the card that will draw major casual interest. They can probably just bump this back to Jan 2 and have them go then.

by Brent Brookhouse on Oct 26, 2009 4:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh...

and I seriously doubt they’re going to do any sort of title eliminator. I’m sure this is something that he’ll be able to shake in another week or two. I’m 99% sure they’d rather just reschedule the fight than put it on the shelf entirely for a title eliminator.

Thats what I thought about the Machida/Shogun decision fiasco. The re-match would be a good addition to the New Year’s card.

"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"

by Warhand on Oct 26, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was actual my thought…although I took it a step further. The end of the year card was looking particular weak. A. Silva wouldn’t sign on and the next best fight was the rumored match-up of Rashad vs Thiago….extremely weak. Now if you add Brock vs Carwin to that card not only does it give it a main event casual fans will tune in for it almost guarantees Anderson signs on because of the pay he would get for being on the card. Making the top 3 fights much more comparable to previous years.

Not to mention UFC106 is a pretty deep card and could afford the cancellation compared to if say BJ and Diego were removed from 107.

I will personally question the validity of Brock’s illness if this fight appears on the end of the year card. It seems like a great business move and all they needed was a reason.

Exactly. Not taking a flu vaccine is one thing. Unless you are very young, very old, or have a weakened immune system, the flu just sucks. It’s not going to kill you though. It’s the people who decide to forego childhood vaccines for measles etc that are endangering all of us and doing so out of ignorance.

These new outbreaks of measles are extremely troubling, particularly while some members of the public continue to listen to celebrities and internet conspiracy theorists instead of people who have spent their lives studying infectious diseases.

Yeah, I get not taking flu shots, etc, unless your unusually susceptible to diseases like that. I’m fairly robust, so I don’t bother. But measles, meningitis, etc, are scarily real & I’ll roll up my sleeve for that. Vaccines are the reason we don’t worry about small pox.

But I always get my cootie shots.

I like all the dream matchups

to throw in the ring with Carwin, but why in the world would Carwin agree to any of them? He was just about to get a title shot. Why fight another guy to get back to the title shot he was just training for?

by rzor on Oct 26, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Carwin has no pull in the UFC. He is not a PPV draw at all. The only people that can pull the “I fight who I want to” are the Anderson Silvas of the world. Do you really think there would be any uproar from fans if someone else got a title shot instead of Carwin?

Not from me – Big Nog, Mir, Cain, Dos Santos have just as valid claims to a title shot IMO.

I don't get why people think Carwin would still fight next month?

Unless — a big unless — Zuffa threw a lot more money at Shane, why would he fight anybody next month? He seems like a guy motivated by becoming champion. He’s been training for Brock, not a super-striker or a sub expert. If he took the fight and lost or became injured, he’ll lose his chance to compete for the title this year, and possibly, most of next year.

I see the UFC moving up one of the matchups from the next UFC. Or maybe signing another HW like Arlovski. Who else could do it? Maybe the twitter chatter from the other HWs will be informative.

the only variable is Brock will pull better on a year end card than he would on a november card.

so if he would have pulled 800k-900k on November against Carwin – he will pull 1m to 1.2m plus on the year end card.

I made it as simple as I could so you would understand I guess Rome was right it was still too complicated.

But luckily for my liver function, I don’t.

I can get cream of crab at the double T on sunday, so I am awesome.

Dude, have even had a double double?

There’s no comparison here.

Yes, it is great. I am not comparing that with cream of crab. But it relevant because Cream of Crab is the scrapple of the crab. I have it over this past summer when I was in san deigo on vacation. A great burger and I was confounded when they asked me if I want onions on it.

In Canada, a double-double is a coffee with 2 cream and 2 sugar.

In Soviet Russia, double-double is two shot vodka and two Belomorkanal cigarette and two Feyodor armbar.

Also in Maryland you got OLD BAY? did not think so.

Of course we’ve got Old Bay. In fact, it’s illegal to not put Old Bay on everything.

Side note: It makes drinking water fun!

Yeah, it’s not like Old Bay was created in Maryland, named after a Maryland body of water by a Maryland company headquartered in Baltimore and enjoyed by people throughout the state…

Too bad 106 isn’t a bit farther in the future…surprise return of ’page to fight ’shad….too soon though, and wounds are still open.

So this event is still going to be PPV?

by DirtyML on Oct 26, 2009 5:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Obviously yes. Tito-Forrest is a much bigger draw than Machida-Shogun or Rich-Vitor and those were.

by Michael Rome on Oct 26, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tito-Forrest is kind of a worthless fight, especially given Forrest’s terrible performance last fight. But I understand their casual appeal, just does not seem like a very good card without further additions to me.

by DirtyML on Oct 26, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Look, after a loss like that...

…Forrest deserves a shot at somebody much less skilled.

Move BJ/Diego to this card and put Shogun/Machida on 107 oh yeah.

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

It’s only a month away, I’d be shocked if they found a way to get another big fight on here. The names just aren’t available. Anderson fucking with the UFC is becoming a regular part of what he does. When I saw how fat he was this weekend I knew he wasnt making 185 in 2 months, he looked 240.

Maybe Silva will fight a HW

Overweight A. Silva vs Gonzaga

by MMA_Messiah on Oct 26, 2009 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A. Silva vs. Shogun is an interesting possibility if Machida is as banged up as rumored.

As a Machida Lover

That was the only consolation I had as the 5th round came to a close….until the scores were read.

Why would you want to see him all busted up like that?

I really don’t like that unless you get something unbreakable that says Silva has to fight machida if he wins. No point in wasting Shogun after what he did this weekend.

Excellent point. That would really suck if Shogun loses.

UFC site has confirmed that Tito vs Forrest is the main event now. No mention of any replacement fights though.

by rabrown on Oct 26, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Rumble vs. Kos for UFC 106 main card anyone?

with Lesnar/Carwin being moved to 108, UFC.com is reporting that Ortiz/Griffin II has already been pushed up to main event status for 106. That’s fine, but now the main card needs another awesome fight to make up for no Fitch/Almeida or Carwin/Lesnar. Neither Anthony Johnson nor Josh Koscheck took any damage in their last respective fights. These two would definitely put on a barnburner.
