Alistair Overeem at the DREAM.12 weigh ins. Certainly not doing anything to tamp down rampant rumors about his abuse of "spinach."

I mean,. there’s just no way he went from fighting Liddell a few years ago to now being this unbelievable beast tearing through the HW division. I just don’t buy that he’s doing that because he’s eating “spinach”. Unless that spinach is coming from a needle..

Have you seen who he's been fighting?
Meh… He hasn’t beaten too many MMA HW’s that are good…. not even close to the level of LHW competition he lost to.
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.

Alistair Overeem's Spinach
I’ve seen a Bloody Elbow staffer admonishing folks for having the temerity to suggest that Overeem may be using performance enhancing drugs. Since this has been posted by the founder of the site, I figured I’d ask:
Is it ok to claim that someone is using gear as long as you only speak metaphorically? Because I’m cool with the “spinach” one you’ve got going on. I mean, I eat spinach every day and darn it all if I’m not adding on pounds of lean mass, but what the hell can you do?

I didn't make any claims or accusations about what Overeem is or is not doing
He’s the one wearing a frigging Popeye shirt that makes a joke about spinach.
We try to be fair, but if a fighter is going to wave his “spinach” flag, we’re going to have fun with it.

Oh come on. “Spinach”? What is that if not at the very least an intimation that Overeem is on gear?
Not that I care, you understand, I just think it’s silly to have staff threatening users because they are putting two and two together. It’s kind of tough to blame folks for being cynical about using performance enhancing drugs in 2009, especially when the fighter in question seems so inclined to fight anywhere but the country in which there is drug testing. It’s a reasonable speculation, I think, even if it is not a proven fact.

we are just trying to police the community
so people can have a pleasant, polite and informed conversation about MMA.
I’ve articulated the difference between front pagers and commenters before, but here it is again:
BloodyElbow is high profile enough that our writers have to stand behind what we say about the fighters. We have to deal with the MMA community in all kinds of ways and people know who we are and what we say about them.
We’ve been sued, threatened, emailed, called and jawed at in person by people who didn’t like what we wrote.
The comments are a different matter.
Essentially we don’t allow ad hominem attacks or unfounded allegations of criminal activity in the comments.
Deal with it.

Deal with it? That’s real mature when someone is trying to understand some obvious hypocrisy from a site admin. Better explanation please. You owe it to yourself.

He owes nothing. He is walking a legal line. I think he made that clear. I am sure Brett accepts that.

I don’t get what’s so hard to understand.
If one of the writers on the site slanders someone, they get sued. If someone in the comments slanders someone, the writers get sued.
It doesn’t take that much common sense to figure out that they get to play by different rules because their names/asses/reputations/bank accounts are on the line.

The comments are a different matter.
Essentially we don’t allow ad hominem attacks or unfounded allegations of criminal activity in the comments.
Does it count as criminal activity of the alleged activity is being conducted in a country in which the activity is not illegal?
We’ve been sued, threatened, emailed, called and jawed at in person by people who didn’t like what we wrote.
So, I would think that it would be wise not to use spinach as a euphemism for steroids, but clearly you understand the risk (or lack thereof) associated with doing so. Frankly, if legal action is being taken over such a post, it’s shameful…not that my feeling on the matter makes your job any easier.
Deal with it.
Oh please.

here's the deal
I could be sued if I posted something that said “Overeem uses steroids” as a blanket statement of fact.
I have no proof so I don’t post that.
Our commenters would and do post stuff like that all the time.
In the absence of hard evidence it’s no different than an ad hominem attack.
Remember guys we do this as a hobby and are making things up as we go along. Running a site that gets a few hundred visitors a day is very different than running a site that gets thousands of visitors an hour.
We’re doing our best to maintain the feeling of community and civility that has distinguished us from the beginning.
And you’ll note I’m not the one using “spinach” as a euphemism for anything. Overeem’s the one flexing his muscles and wearing a Popeye shirt. I’m not going to hide that from the community.

NOT TRYING TO START SHIT:
What confuses people – and you obviously get this enough that a) it’s confusing a lot of people, and b) you’re probably sick to death of talking about it – is that in our minds you guys are doing it in a way that seems backwards.
Over at Slashdot, they have this at the bottom of the page:
Comments are owned by the Poster. The Rest © 1997-2009 SourceForge, Inc.
They do their best to keep the things the editors themselves post as free of libel, slander and lies as possible, and then in the comments they let the users go to town.
And here’s the thing: Slashdot gets so much more attention than this site, and has such worse comments (seriously: I couldn’t handle the level of discourse!), that it’s hard to understand the difference in policy. Obviously I am not a laywer (I’m Anderson Silva’s big brother who speaks better English and is far too dangerous to allow in the cage), and you’ve talked to your own counsel, but can you see where the average user is confused?
(Not that I don’t appreciate the level of discourse, and 99% of the comment moderation that goes on here. I REALLY do.)

I'm not worried about getting sued
because of some dumbass slander you post, or any other commenter. The law is crystal clear on that.
I’m saying the writers have more latitude than the commenters because we are held responsible for what we say — by the commenters, by the fighters, by the lawyers.
For the commenters, the only thing between you yobs and Sherdog is us, walking that Thin Blue Line and policing you guys. We don’t want ad hominem attacks in the comments. Not on the fighters, not on the writers, not on the other commenters.

I have noticed two things on this subject.
1) Much depends on what kind of mood certain staff members are in.
2) If staff thinks it’s funny then it is okay but if staff does not think it is funny you might get your hand slapped.

I should try some of that spinach, maybe then i’ll be able to launch myself out of the cage every time I try a knee.
In all seriousness, he just made Sylvester and Thomson look like clowns. Wish him well in the K-1 GP, and here’s to hoping the Fedor fight materializes. Because it’s looking like if all goes according to plan, Fedor will have beaten Rogers and Werdum on network TV in the meantime

Everyone loves to say that the AO’s size gain is impossible to take place in a 1-2 year time frame. Myself personally i don’t believe it, from personal experience approximately 6 yrs ago i got into bodybuilding temporily in which without any supplements outside of Creatine i put on 40 pounds of muscle in about 7 months. Looking back i didnt know what i was doing and regret it now as i got way to bulky for my body type and have some scars to show for it. At that time i was walking around 200 lbs, today i walk at around 155.
AO’s has said when he fought at 205 he would never do any weightlifting plus you can see his cardio showed for it. But naturally with age he was bound to gain weight and decided to weightlift as can be seen by his size increase. Plus he is gifted with good genes. So i call shenanigans on those that accuse him of being a steroid user w/o any proof what so ever outside of his size increase.

Maybe he just clicked on one of those “don’t pay for creatine”/“don’t waste money on protein shakes” ads.

Here's the thing
I don’t know anything about you, and none of us can verify what you’re saying (pix!), but AO was already a top-level athlete back then who was training year round. He may have amped up his weight-lifting, but it’s not like he went from, “guy who never does any activity,” to, “guy who works out for 7 months and puts on 40lbs. of muscle.”
Instead, he went from, “guy who is a top level athelete,” to, “guy that may as well have gotten horse testicle transplants from the amount of testosterone flooding his body.”
You see?

Yea I do understand where you’re coming from. But I still err on the side of caution when it comes to believing he did steroids. Of course u don’t know about me. Myself I wasn’t any top level athlete. I was in HS football, wrestling and track. Though I wasn’t a top athlete by far I had at that time just come of a torn mcl and wanted to get back in great shape. Part of it i think might have been muscle memory and the other was my efforts. I no longer am close to what I became at that time I am just a lean dude now. But it wasn’t like i just got of the couch after eating a tub of ice cream and then gained that size I was in decent shape going in.
