DREAM.12 Post Fight: Is Marius Zaromskis the new Mirko Cro Cop?
In news that's getting lost in the fold from all the Machida vs Shogun controversies, DREAM Welterweight Champion, Marius Zaromskis (13-3) made waves by continuing his streak of vicious head kick KOes. His latest victim, Myeon Ho Bae. From the DREAM.12 live blog:
Zaromskis comes out guns blazing, but backs out after being tagged by a Bae punch. Seconds later, the DREAM welterweight champ tags the iron-jawed Korean with the trademark head kick that took him through the WWGP finals, putting Bae down for the count. Unreal.
The finish came at just 19 seconds into the first round. This year's Welterweight Grand Prix winner, now has five wins in a row, and three straight via brutal head kick knockouts, which begs the question, is Marius the new Mirko?
Other thoughts:
-I'm scared for Sakuraba's health, the sub was good, but he can't always take those kinds of beatings.. He better call it quits soon. It would be sad if something really bad happens to him inside the cage/ring.
-Alistair Overeem almost jumping out of the cage with that flying knee was shocking, but the quick victory wasn't. Here's to hoping he fights better competition after he finishes his K-1 obligations.
-Poor Chase Beebe.

I'm going to discredit his record = win
His only victory against a quality opponent is Sakurai. I’ll admit that I’ve watched and enjoyed many of his fights. He’s got big power and what he lacks in his striking compared to Cro Cop he makes up for with his moderate knowledge of ground work. However, I think it’s premature to say he’s the next Mirko.
dispatching all the guys he fought in the WWGP easily is no joke..
and yeah could be too early to tell. but he’s getting there..

Yep, those last two are easily what make Cro Cop the most badass.
Get elected, Marius, then we’ll talk.

without directly answering the poll question, i will say… what kind of opponent gets KO’d in 30 seconds with a head kick when that’s the #1 thing he should have been looking out for in preparation for this fight.
dream has some great fighters, zaromskis being one of them, but their matchmaking is a joke.

their matchmaking is horrible but they might be giving zaromskis some easy fights to build him up. plus he already ko’d sakurai, one of japans biggest welterweight stars.
Not to mention giving Jason High the Ragdoll Physics Treatment

I find it crazy that a lot of people who probably just saw Myeon Ho Bae for the first time last night are so quick to classify him as a can or an easy fight.

2 separate items.
first one i’m asking, without calling him a can or an easy fight (i didn’t say that), is how did he not know the HK was coming? did he watch any video or what? it’s pretty disappointing. it suggests he was not prepared for this fight.
second issue is a broader comment on dream matchmaking. it’s no good. i find myself increasingly looking forward to sengoku shows, but increasingly turned off by dream. it’s all spectacle and hardly any sport.

Not a very good argument. How come Sherk’s, Hughes, Cain, GSP, etc opponents don’t prepare for being taken down. How come Kampmen didn’t take Paul Daley down, he should have known he was going to strike with him. All fighters should know what’s coming. Easy to say, apparently hard to do.
Sakurai and High should have known as well, etc.

I don’t think he was saying he should be ashamed that he lost by headkick, just the fact that it happened less than a minute into the fight was disappointing.
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

comparing general takedown defense with not stopping a high kick knockout inside of 19 seconds? when your opponent won his last two fights with high kick knockouts? come on.
no disrespect to the guy, but let’s get real. zaromkis just won the ww grand prix, he should be fighting world-class competition now.
anyway this is just a tangent. the point is dream has become my least favorite promotion.

Mirko’s opponents knew a headkick was coming too.. what happened to most of them?

Holy s**t. No matter who does it to whom, a KO like that is always a pleasure to watch.
Is Marius the new MIRKO? Too early to tell.
Will MIRKO be the “old Marius”? Time will tell, but maybe, maybe…
