UFC 104 Results: Cain Velazquez Dominates, but Takes Gift Stoppage Over Ben Rothwell
Steve Mazzagatti thought what we all thought: Rothwell was getting butchered. But then Mazzagatti lent credence to Dana White's criticism that he's also on his own program when it comes to refereeing.
The story of the fight is the relentless wrestling onslaught from Velazquez that saw the overwhelmed Rothwell simply unable to keep up. Velazquez used a wide array of single leg takedown variety to tear Rothwell to the floor over and over. Eventually the American Kickboxing Academy product was able to weave in strikes as he kept Rothwell on his back or trying to wall walk.
After a clear 10-8 round for Velazquez in the first, a wobbled Rothwell came out in the second hanging on with toughness and a desire to see the fight to a finish. Velazquez picked up where he left in the second looking close to stopping Rothwell with punches as Rothwell attempted to stand against the fence. Referee Steve Mazzagatti steps in to ostensibly save Rothwell from further punishment while the Miletich product was changing positions from kneeling to standing. A clearly upset Rothwell protested to whoever would listen as a clearly not pleased Joe Silva congratulated consoled him nonetheless.
Cain Velazquez looked good, but the dish wasn't underooked. The fight ends in the second at the :58 mark.
[Editor's note from Luke]: I have no idea why I wrote Joe Silva congratulated Ben Rothwell. I believe I meant to write console, although I'm not sure that's accurate either. Whatever the case, the look on Silva's face didn't seem to corroborate Mazzagatti's decision.

It looked like Mazzagatti went in to stop the fight prior to Ben trying to get up. Not a totally bad stoppage.

Im sorry, but....
That was a late stoppage as far as I am concerned. After the 1st round, and the condition that Rothwell appeared in. I would have stopped it at the end of that round. The 5 straight punches to the face that he could not defend was a bit extra that I didn’t feel was necessary. I will never understand why you guys want to see more unnecessary damage done to a fighter that has no reasonable chance to win even an exchange, much less a round or the fight.
oh also...

Because sometimes those fighters come back and win.

I don't disagree with the stoppage.
Frankly, I don’t think Rothwell should have come out for the 2nd round. Steve clearly warned him prior to and when things picked right back up, Mazzagatti stepped in and stopped what was going to be a savage beating.
I have no problem with it.
Cain Velazquez Dominates, but Takes Gift Stoppage Over Ben Rothwell??
how is it agift stoppage if he was dominating him?? thats tantalizingly close to being an oxymoron. he was mauling him. rothwell was gifted an early shower i think is what you could have wrote hehe
