Quote of the Day 2: Chael Sonnen Takes Shots at Yushin Okami

Photo

"He’s a step in the wrong direction. Unmarketable. Not pleasing to watch and a horrible interview."

"He doesn’t do a whole lot (in the cage). If I wanted to stand there and look at him, he would just stand and look at me back. But if you go after him, he’ll engage. If you go to mess around with him, that’s when he’ll turn it on. And he just keeps finding a way to win."

-Chael Sonnen discussing his UFC 104 opponent Yushin Okami via Yahoo!'s Cagewriter blog.  Certainly not flattering words from the WEC veteran.

Is Sonnen describing Machida?

Twitter: @FlyByKnite

by FlyByKnight on Oct 23, 2009 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Not really, Machida is a counter striker and will wait you to make a mistake then punish you for it. Clearly Machida is not as boring as either of these two fighters and will attack but before his last two wins many folks thought that he was just as awful to watch.

I suggest you go back and watch some of Machida’s fights. He is more than willing to engage if his opponent will not initiate the action.

He won’t stand in the pocket in trade shot-for-shot, but he most definitely will initiate the exchanges if that is what his opponent gives him. If his opponent stands outside and waits on him, he’ll gladly come in and smack them upside the head, get out of range before they can counter, and then get back in range and counter their counter before they can reset.

by Steve4192 on Oct 24, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea i said he will attack, just saying the public perception of Machida before his last two fights was that he wouldn’t attack and would just “run” the whole fight.

Terrible quote cherry-picking

Borderline unacceptable, both on Cagewriter and Bloody Elbow. The original article reads as follows:

Asked about Okami on ufc.com, Sonnen said: “He’s a step in the wrong direction. Unmarketable. Not pleasing to watch and a horrible interview.”

The comments may have been tongue-in-cheek. Sonnen was more serious in an interview.

“He’s just a hard guy to beat,” Sonnen said. "He doesn’t do a whole lot. If I wanted to stand there and look at him, he would just stand and look at me back. But if you go after him, he’ll engage. If you go to mess around with him, that’s when he’ll turn it on. And he just keeps finding a way to win.

“So how do I look at him? I look at him like ‘Gosh this is a tough guy.’ He’s got good reach, he’s got good height, he’s strong, he’s big, he’s got experience, you know he’s got a little bit of everything and he can fight everywhere, punch and kick, he can go to the ground, he can do submissions. I think he’s a black belt in jiu-jitsu, so he’s a tough guy. But this is a different fight for him, he hasn’t fought anybody like me, not in the UFC or anywhere else so this is a tough night for him too.”

For that matter, the discussion was apparently with TSN, not with Cagewriter.

At any rate, always click through, folks—because the lure of cropping an extra provocative quote is simply too strong to resist.

In this case, one must click through twice to find the actual statement in context—context that weakens the thrust of Cofield’s post at Cagewriter and transports this post to the unpleasant void somewhere between misleading and inaccurate.

SLIGHTLY edited the post to make it more clear that it wasn’t one continuous quote. That being said, he did SAY the words I quoted. I’m not going to quote the entire article…and it isn’t my place to determine if his comments were tongue in cheek or not.

I'm not trying to break the rule about biting the hand that feeds

Because you guys do good work. It never crossed my mind to complain to Cofield about his equally misleading copy, because who even cares what he’s about.

Additionally I would not expect you to quote an entire article nor spend much time parsing the speech of Chael Sonnen.

That being said, I was disappointed to read such a quote, then follow your link to Cofield’s post, then follow his link to an actual article, and only then find out that the quoted material was merged together from two separate sources and interviews—and that the very next sentence from the second interview excerpted significantly alters the impact of the entire ‘quote’.

That is really sketchy writing. What if we cut and copied all of our articles to make things sound they we want them to? Shoot straight sunshine. Sonnen vs okami may very well be the most boring fight of the year, most of us know he is no more exciting than watching paint dry. Tell it like it is and let the people have their unbiased opinion.

by magneto on Oct 24, 2009 4:10 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I don't see it

I don’t see how that’s cherry picking at all. The quote here is his exact quote pretty much exactly as presented in the article you linked. It’s not like he’s being misrepresented; this article is simply highlighting the more inflammatory remarks because they are what was notable from that interview.

Exactly!

If it weren’t for the fact that most people loathe Sonnen, this article easilly could have been titled “Sonnes praises Okami” and included only the following quote …

"So how do I look at him? I look at him like ‘Gosh this is a tough guy.’ He’s got good reach, he’s got good height, he’s strong, he’s big, he’s got experience, you know he’s got a little bit of everything and he can fight everywhere, punch and kick, he can go to the ground, he can do submissions. I think he’s a black belt in jiu-jitsu, so he’s a tough guy.

But … since most people think Sonnen is a deluded prick, they choose to cherry pick the inflammatory stuff and leave out the stuff that doesn’t jibe with the ‘Sonnen is asshole’ tone of the article.

I shouldn't even have to note:

Combining comments taken from different interviews and displaying them as if they were contemporaneous is typically not best practice.

Maybe not the most laudatory words, but they are accurate in describing Okami and his struggles to move up from the undercard.

Kinda like how He and Filho just stood there and looked at each other.

Sonnen so easily could have KO’d Filho anytime, but he just stood there with Filho. That was one of the worst fights i’ve ever seen.

I dunno. I think it’d be hard to be in his position. Do you finish a guy who is clearly out of his mind?

Yes. Absolutely.

Even if you mercifully tap him out instead of a TKO, you finish him.

LOL at wanting a guy with notoriously bad submission defense to get on the ground and mercifully tap out a BJJ powerhouse. Even in a barely conscious hallucinatory state, Filho would still tap out Sonnen. Chael would have been a frigging idiot to go down to the mat with Paulo, especially in light of how their first fight went.

by Steve4192 on Oct 24, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re suggesting that Sonnen should have followed Filho to the ground… and tapped him out.

Wow.

by Shaun32887 on Oct 24, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

You completely missed my point.

1. I was speaking in a universal sense – not just to Sonnen/Filho 2.
2. I said even if you submit him, meaning it’s not the only option. A RNC is arguably safer than pounding a guy’s face in, so it’s like a mercy killing (See: Diaz/Smith). For Sonnen/Filho 2, obviously Chael shouldn’t have followed him to the ground.

by Scott C. Broussard on Oct 24, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

We were talking about a specific case, if you’re going back to universal ideals, you need to specify it. And yes, a RNC is safer for all parties involved than a GnP TKO, but I can’t think of any way that Chael could have “mercy killed” Filho without putting himself at significant risk, especially in light of their first fight. So while I usually agree with you, I think Chael did the right thing in this case.

by Shaun32887 on Oct 24, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, I figured when Brent went from Filho to “a guy”, it moved away from particulars.

it's probably b/c he saw that paula filho was on drugs whether they were street or prescribed

i could see it in his face. he looked very spacey. after sonnen new he would win the fight he took it easy on him. he could have done some serious brain damge to p.f. paulo filho did not even show up for his dream matchup and don’t give me any zhit that it was a visa issue. even mousasi called him a donkey on steroids. everybody in mma knows this. he career is over. yes it was a boring fight but c. soonen did the right thing.

by wolfmanshowlforever on Oct 24, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't blame him for that

He looked confused, just as I would have been. Filho was clearly out of his mind, I’d be hesitant to engage someone like that.

He’s right you know.

I like Sonnen. He’s pretty funny and he spices up otherwise fairly boring fights.

Loosing both faith and interest

I am getting more bored and even more suspicious about the reporting/ writing that this site is promoting lately. Anyone else think it’s caliber has dropped? If not, and I am the only one who is bored with the same repititve bashing fighter type articles, I will just keep to myself. Not sure if the facts of these stories are getting thru to the casual fan and even hardcore alike. Getting nervous that this site maybe controlled by one particular camp or bias towards certain fighters and events.
