He is looking at Shogun like, “dude you better not get your ass kicked in the first 30 seconds”.
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

LMAO. That is a funny observation. I've noticed...
he has the same look during most of the face-offs. You can tell he’s really looking to what their eyes are saying. He mentioned this once in an article…about what he notices at the weigh-ins. He said it’s often his first glimpse of how the guy is going to perform the next day. No secret there. But it is interesting to see the above photo.
Notice Shogun is avoiding eye contact? He’s either nervous or admiring that smart tie.

calm down now, a picture can mean many things, where is the video to see if he’s actually avoiding eye contact?

it’s not because he’s scared, but for a Brazilian to avoid eye contact would be telling, but this was just a pic!

Shogun ALWAYS avoids eye contact. He only looks into his opponents eyes when he shakes their hand. It’s not at all a sign of weakness.

I did, back in pride. he keeps his eyes down and shakes out the arms during the ref’s rules part, then turns into an animal when the bell rings. he never tried to look at the opponent or intimidate them.
by judonerd on Oct 24, 2009 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
just because he’s not trying to intimidate them doesn’t mean he’s avoiding eye contact. He’s always in a state of mind before the bout begins, he’s concentrating trying to not psych himself out. but he’s not avoiding eye contact.

Can Machida do no wrong?
He looks like Ryu, fights like a karate master, and now he styles and profiles like Ric Flair. Shogun, Ninja, Samurai, it doesn’t matter what Rua is, he’s just another notch in Machida’s win column.

I think Sonnen,Schafer and Yoshida are all pretty live dogs thats some good value. IMO Sonnen has some of the best Wrestling out there and usually only loses buy sub and I dont see Okami pulling that off he is more of a GNP’er.

but it’s true though, believe it or not I’m a Machida fan. I’ve been defending the guy forever when he was been called boring. I’ve just been following Shogun’s career since he was fighting in Brazil, I’ve become a huge fan over the years, it’s not easy to let go and I won’t let go, even if he get’s forrest griffened by Machidaness (which won’t happen). But I’ll still be a Machida fan even if he wins or loses to Shogun, it’s a matter of weighing who I like the most.

I don’t think they’ll allow him to get back to 205, but I can still have hopes! Let’s say Quinton loses his next two fights to Rashad and the loser of Lyoto/Shogun, perhaps the UFC could bring Wandy up to 205 for one last fight with Page, that third fight ended too quick, I wanted to see a war :(

A couple notes from the weigh ins...
Brandon Vera, Akiyama and I think Belfort will be doing autographs all day. Shane Carwin bailed on the Q&A, but he did come out and shook everyones hand and signed autographs/ took pics. Carwin is really only 6’2" and I’m convinced Lesnar is gonna murder him. He looks about 250lbs right now. Its ridiculously hot out here, good news is the line if finally moving.
All fighters will be signing autographs and taking pics (some before and after) the weigh ins. Everyone in line hates me because I’m under some scaffolding and wood which is giving me awesome shade. My friends are warriors! They’re in line and not complaining saving my spot of course. More when I’m inside. Peace!

Of course you realize this means
Johnson will be about 195 at fight time. It will be another 15 lb overwhelming ala GSP vs BJ Penn II.
It looks like he has grown himself right into the MW division

Yes...
but generally if both camps are willing they’d rather go that route than try and make a guy make a legitimately dangerous cut. Fighting a bigger guy is nowhere near as dangerous as someone having to fight with a dehydrated brain

How does this work
Fighter A doesn’t make weight, are fighter Bs only options make them lose the weight or accept the fight? What if they can’t lose the weight, is the fight forfeit? How does that work out financially for the fighters involved?

Right
but the fighter a still has to fight fighter b? Doesn’t seem fair, 20% of AJs purse isn’t nearly as big as the extra 6 pounds of muscle he’s carrying to the cage with him

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.
by ufc4 on Oct 23, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly
should be 50% of the fighters purse. nip that shit in the bud. the overweight fighter knows his opponent wont walk away from a purse, make less incentive form him to drain himself. taking more money away from fighters who dont make weight will make fighters get closer to weight level sooner and not wait until the day before, making it an almost impossible siituation. 220lbs is what everyone was talking about a few days ago, but he’ll make weight,no sweat….exactly no sweat. :(
by bdw on Oct 23, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve always thought the overweight fighter should have to hand over his entire win bonus if he wins, although I suppose that could lead to shenanigans if the overweight fighter makes a bunch more money than his opponent.

I think we should be a little cautious about saying AJ can’t make 170 anymore. After his injury he blew up to 220 lbs without being able to work up, and then tried to burn down to 170. He’s always made it before, and I suspect he’ll make it next time.
by Michael Rome on Oct 23, 2009 7:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i’m just speculating, but he’s so young, and its not only his size that gets affected… bone density, muscle density… if he’s training consistently and hard theres no way that a guy with that frame can continue to make 170

No...this is a sport...
the cut is a part of the sport. Yes, Johnson should have made weight…he didn’t. Still…it’s not like he has a history of this and he IS coming off of an injury. There is a long list of great fighters who have missed weight following an injury.

the weight cut adds the dynamic brought in by wrestlers, but Johnson may want to really think about going to MW.. What if all that weight he put on wasn’t slop weight? Maybe he’s just gaining man weight

well maybe if Johnson wouldnt be out using his ex GF as his sparring partners and screwing all the women in the bay area as his cardio he would make weight. Johnson would rather order dominoes pizza and run thru burger king that hop on a damn treadmill. He wasn’t fu*king injured his last fight he just knew out being a movie star in Pittsburgh was more important than prepping for a fight! All that know AJ, knows he has the worst work ethic imaginable. There are a ton of guys that would give up there 9-5 and train like horses to have his opportunity, and Rumble takes advantage of all of it!! Get over yourselves.. lets hope Yoshida takes it to the 2nd and 3rd rounds and sees this fool gas out like he always has!! GO YOSHIDA!!!

They're using a digital scale now? Interesting
Johnson didn’t look too good to me. Wonder if this will pull the line back closer to Yoshida? Or does the extra weight push it more in favor of Rumble?
Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.

Digital is a hell of a lot more accurate
Most go down to 0.1 accuracy. Balance scale? Being off by as much as 0.25 or so is nothing. Now, that may not sound like much…until you’re the one that has to cut it.
