Dana White Says Dan Henderson Wants to Be Highest Paid UFC Fighter
"We're at a stalemate right now," White said. "The money that [Henderson] is asking for would make him by far the highest-paid guy in the UFC."
- Dana White speaking to MMAJunkie about the Dan Henderson contract negotiations.
If this is true it's an amazing revelation. Dan Henderson has never proven to be a huge draw and we can't accurately gauge where he stands in the eyes of the PPV drawing public after his stint as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter since the blow-off fight for the season was on the loaded UFC 100 card.
Dana goes on to explain that Dan is welcome back to the UFC but only on the contractual terms that the UFC offered. Also, White ran into Hendo's lawyer and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker having dinner together in L.A. It's hard to believe that if money is truly a motivating factor in Dan's decision making process that Strikeforce will be able to offer the kind of deal that the UFC can. We'll just have to continue to monitor the situation and see where it leads.
While I put a lot of blame on Anderson Silva for the middleweight mess yesterday, it'd be dishonest of me to not admit that Hendo may be deserving of a good chunk of blame when it comes to his own situation.

Does “a good chunk of the blame” mean “all of the blame”? If so, then I agree. I have no idea what he thinks makes him worth that much money. He hasn’t been impressive in the UFC yet, and his KO of Bisping was nice but had more to do with Bispings ridiculous strategy than Hendo’s “Me gonna punch ya!” tactic.
Goodbye Dan, good riddance. Now we can hopefully have some contenders who want to fight.

Dana is probably lying/parsing words. He does this all the time. I bet Dan is asking for a big upfront amount that would make him the highest paid in some way for a short period, but not over a long haul. That or hes asking for the biggest signing bonus ever.

Yea i am in total agreement with you. This is negotiating 101 put out a story that makes the other party seem greedy and way out there and make yourself seem like the reasonable one. In this situation all the observers turns against Hendo (in this case) for being so unreasonable and force Hendo to reduce his demands otherwise he gets a black eye to his image and probably hurt his future drawing power.

Yea i am sure that he is asking for the biggest possible deal he thinks he can get. I just believe that what Dana is saying is just a little misleading. As i feel that chances are being that this probably is the last contract he’s ever gonna sign therfore he probably wants more in guaranteed money than one that is dependent more on PPV %. And Dana probably rather have a contract more tied to the PPV %. Therefore reducing as much $ liabilities for the UFC.
by pRoXiMo on Oct 22, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, Dana is definitely being a little misleading, but I think Dan is also asking for a lot more than even he knows he can get so I don’t understand the point. If you want to negotiate then do it, if you just want to sit there and pout unless you get a 400% raise then just go home and quit wasting everyone’s time.

Well thats the thing with negotiations you always start higher than you feel you’re worth and then you negotiate down to the reasonable offer. While Dana is supposed to Lowball Hendo and work his way up. But i get the sense that Dana is sticking to his lowball offer (which probably is a slight raise maybe $150K- 200K guarateed) and Hendo is probably looking for $300K. Just my feeling on it.

..If Dana is being the least bit truthful on this, Dan would have to be asking for at least 500,000 per fight guaranteed. To make him the “highest paid fighter” he would have to top Brock and GSP and there pulling down like 450,000 something to show or something like that. Dan is a great fighter and always brings it but he is not worth that kind of money IMO…his fan base does not dictate that kind of pay.

“The money that [Henderson] is asking for would make him by far the highest-paid guy in the UFC.”
Another possibility he is excluding ppv cuts since it is not guaranteed. If Hendo was asking for $500,000 a fight he would be the highest paid fighter, since, I believe, Brock and a few others make around $400,000 guaranteed. But of course when you add ppv profit shares to him or GSP it can go over a $1,000,000. So Dana is being technically true, but also very misleading.

sometimes you place a pawn out in the open to see if the other side is willing to expose themselves and lose their queen…
Its a no lose situation for Zuffa whether he does or doesnt sign. Hendo is the perfect type of fighter to burn your competitors budget with.
Tim Sylvia was released to burn Afflictions budget, initially so it would be easier to re-sign arlovski… but not only did affliction lose their queen they basically submitted their King as well when bidding went so far and they had to sign arlovski to a more than 3 million dollar deal.
If Affliction didnt sign Tim or Arlovski and some other useless guys they could have signed Tito.
If strikeforce signs Dan… A bunch of people at Zuffa will be smiling.

why don’t they try to work out an incentive where his percentage of the PPV goes up per 100,000 buys? That way, if he is a draw, he makes progressively more money, and if not, then he doesn’t. I definately think Dan should be paid for his contributions to the sport, but lets face it Hughes’ retirement contract is because he’s one of the most recognizable fighters in the world, same with chuck and randy. They made the UFC what it is today while Dan fought in pride, and then got bought out into the UFC, where he hasn’t won a title. I know i’m probably repeating whats been said and what everyones thinking, but I’m a huge Hendo fan and I think he could probably go the distance with any fighter in the Middleweight or LHW division right now, barring an out of nowhere RNC.

i don’t know why i thought that thought process was completed, but this just seems out of character for what Hendo’s been known as. He deserves to get paid, but maybe they can work in a finishing bonus into his contract so he’d HAVE to finish fights devastatingly like Bisping. Like 250,000 g up front, .25% of PPV or something, a win bonus of 200, and a win bonus of 300,000 if he ends in in awesome fashion

File this under
too much information Dana. Why does White constantly need to make everything public; with the hopes taht the fans take his side and hate on Henderson for being “greedy”. Insane stuff. Negotiations should be kept private. Super, super unprofessional to go public with this stuff.
This is why people hate on Dana and will come back to finally haunt him. While there is no denying all the acomplishments Dana has made to the sport, I honestly cant see a bunch of multi-million dollar investors feeling comfortable investing in the UFC (buying shares) with such a loose cannon in charge.

I highly doubt Dan Henderson said he needs to be the highest paid fighter in the org. I really, really doubt that. We know Dana made 350k for his last fight and has said he feels he is worth more than that. If we are talking base pay, the top guys get not that much more than that and Dave Meltzer has reported that Dan is looking for a “major signing bonus” as well.
Obviously not deal is going to net him the 2-4 million dollar paydays that guys like GSP, Lesnar and Couture have made, but it is likely we are talking about a base pay with bonus deal that would pay him over 500k a fight on the average. If true, it would be the biggest deal of any current UFC fighter.
It is worth noting that Soko was initially asking for huge money to sign. This was back when he danced with several companies before coming back and doing a deal with the UFC.

Of course $100,000 was for KO of the night bonus and not part of his actual contract.
Sherdog has some interesting points:
http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/henderson-denies-whites-contract-claims-20492
Highlights:
Dan understands and we have a certain belief on where he stands in the hierarchy. Certainly there are champions and former UFC champions that deserve to be paid more than Dan."
Crecy added that Henderson’s counteroffer to the new contract presented to him last July likely wouldn’t even place him among the top 10 athletes in the organization in terms of pay.
Recent Internet rumblings have suggested the sides are stuck on a seven-figure signing bonus the fighter had requested. The UFC has issued signing bonuses to a handful of athletes in the past, though that information is never made public.
"The only reason we spoke with Strikeforce, if I’m not mistaken, was because Dana suggested we do so, at a time when he said the UFC wasn’t prepared to pay Dan what he’s asking, and that’s fine," said Crecy.
If I had to guess, nothing will get settled until after Nov 7th. If Strikeforce has huge numbers and Gegard looks great look for Dana to go running after Dan. If the opposite happens, Dan comes back with hat in hand.

Aaron Crecy, Henderson’s friend and business partner, on Thursday afternoon disputed the idea that Henderson was pricing himself out of the market.
"Based on conversations we’ve had with other fighters and managers, we don’t believe that to be the case," he said.
Crecy stated it was the second meeting between Fagan and Strikeforce, the first being an informal coffee meeting two weeks prior.

The problem is Dan isn’t worth as much as those other guys so asking for that kind of money is stupid.
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

Dan should have tried his hand at fighting Nate, if he won he could have asked for more money.
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

You can’t fight without a contract and the UFC isn’t gonna give him a one fight deal.

Negotiation theory :
BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement) – in this case, Strikeforce, by showing he has alternatives he strengthens his negotiating power. Dana white counters by basically saying his BATNA is to let Henderson go and that’s more desirable to him than paying out.
Anchoring point: – basically the opening offer, whoever controls this statistically gets a better deal, hence its advantageous for hendo to set a really high number
ZOPA (zone of possible agreement) – The zone between the maximum the UFC will pay and the minimum hendo will take. Since negotiations fell apart we can conclude that their numbers don’t overlap thus they have no ZOPA.
