I thought Paul Harris was going to face Maia, was that never one or did it get cancelled?

That was never considered

Maia vs. Dan Miller at 109, and Palhares vs. Linhares on this card.

WAR FITCH!!!

Awesome, awesome rematch – I don’t think that Fitch will be able to grind him down and will instead fight or fall. Here’s to the former.

Aha, so it ain't Hughes

This card is so staked, tho. Actually was hoping the Belcher fight would be on the televised card to fill that out… maybe it’ll be a war and they show it since Mir breaks Kongo’s ankle within :30

I’m hoping Rousimar Palhares vs. Lucio Linhares makes it to the broadcast.

Paul Harris vs Lynn Harris.

Good, at least it isnt Hughes fighting Fitch.

Sweet card man!!

I MUCH prefered Almeida, but none the less, this is a card to wait for. Fitch and Alves isn’t the most exciting for obvious reasons (“See which guy who got mauled by GSP can best the other!”) but it’s still a good matchup.

don't forget that Fitch

already mauled Alves much much worse than GSP mauled either of them.

This is true

But Thiago was very underwhelming in his first 4 fights in the UFC. It’s pretty incredible seeing him now and how much he’s come along.

by Zack Gobie on Oct 22, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he’s a different fighter now.

Decided to spare Paulo Thiago. Now give that poor kid a fight he can win.

I STILL poop rainbows.

Alves/Fitch II is a decent fight and should help clear up some of the ranks among the welterweights.

What about Martin Kampmann/Paulo Thiago? If I were Martin I’d be rushing myself back into the cage ASAP.

With Almeida injured, maybe he can match up sometime in the future with Dong Hyun Kim who was also hurt recently.

Thank you. What I wrote was too confusing.

by John Nash on Oct 22, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Thiago has had some tough fights already, and he could be a real force if the UFC decide to build him up properly. Maybe a matchup like Thiago vs Hazelett, and if he get past him, maybe Hughes?

Yea big break for Paulo, starting off his UFC career against Kos, Fitch and Alves is just cruel.

Either the UFC hates the guy or they think he is the next Silva, I’m going with the hate.

Good card but, from a promotional point of view, one with four semi-main events.

by IainLiddle on Oct 22, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

Nice

I wonder if Alves can keep it standing this time other wise he will take a pounding on the bottom like last time.

by J_Maddux on Oct 22, 2009 5:19 PM EDT reply actions

The battle to be the number 1 welterweight in the world……. if GSP was never born.

Sorry, he Jason Bourned me.

by MMAussie on Oct 22, 2009 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

Haha, exactly. This should sort out who the current #2 WW really is (most say Fitch, I say Alves, though I think Fitch will take this one).

I think Alves should be ranked #2, though it seems most disagree at put Fitch there instead. However, regardless of ranking, I suspect Fitch will win.

by JRN on Oct 22, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Just sayin, how you got Alves above Fitch, but Fitch winning?

Or do you differentiate rankings from who is the better fighter? This I could understand

Not only is this what I do, but I think this is the only way to do it.

by JRN on Oct 22, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

That said, I may not be weighing Fitch’s win over Paulo Thiago heavily enough. Paulo became a top 10 guy after beating Koscheck. Perhaps the conventional wisdom on this is right after all.

Home card in Memphis

Disapointed that Rampage/Rashad isn’t on it.

However kudos to the UFC for filling this card in with high level guys.

Sanchez for the Upset. Calling it now.

Alves takes the rematch.

If memory serves me, Fitch won via upkick the first time around. Considering what has happened since then, particularly in the last few fights, and the types of opponents they’ve bested, I think Alves will show that he’s quite a better fighter now than when they first fought. I honestly don’t think Fitch has evolved much, if any, over the past year or two. It’s gonna be tough for him.

Was anyone else excited to see Almeida vs Fitch, or was it just me?

That’s a major bummer.

I was

And I would have picked Almeida, too.

Terrific fight

This is a completely different fight than the first one- both have improved substantially since then. It makes sense in the context of the division as well because then you’re only building up one contender GSP already beat- like Marquardt and Henderson would be.

by BilboMcFonzie on Oct 22, 2009 8:02 PM EDT reply actions

Excdllent, been waiting for this rematch. Fitch knocked him down with an upkick last time, which was pretty cool.

I remember in the commentary for that fight Goldberg saying to Rogan, “Fitch is a big dude, he fought at 185 in his UFC debut while Alves looks like he could probably make 155”.

This shirt is "dry clean only", which means it's dirty.

Should be a great card

Contender match?

Spinning out solid gold, like Rumpelstiltskin.

by Heenan on Oct 22, 2009 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

Will be for Fitch if he wins, not to sure if Alves will get one if he wins, will be hard to sell a rematch with him and GSP with there first meeting still in the back of peoples minds… but then again not sure how you can bypass Alves, should be interesting.

Was wondering the same. Does the winner here surpass the Swick-Hardy winner for next title shot?

If not, who would the winner face in the meantime? For example, if Fitch wins, it would be 3 straight since losing to GSP, and a win over the next best guy (Alves). Not many other matchups he could have in the meantime to help his contender status if you’ve beaten Thiago Alves.

by Hardcharger on Oct 23, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Just a comment

given that this is a rematch, isn’t there an actual weigh-in faceoff picture that could be used?

Who wants to bet that BJ calls out the winner of this fight for another shot at GSP?

by Ubernoober on Oct 23, 2009 10:48 AM EDT reply actions

You know, if BJ is so intent on fighting GSP, I wouldn’t mind seeing him try to just compete at WW. I think he’s only competed 4 times at WW. 2 against Hughes, 2 against GSP. Granted, he did beat Hughes when it counted, but he’s still 1-3. I would like to see if he can hang with Alves, Team AKA, etc. I feel those guys would be a handful for him.

I love me some Sexyama!
