UFC to Counter Strikeforce with 2-Hour Special
via Sherdog
Headlining bouts from UFC 101 through UFC 103 will air Nov. 7 on Spike TV at 9 p.m., the same time and date that Strikeforce will be making its debut on CBS.
Spike TV announced Wednesday that it will air the UFC 102 main event between Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the UFC 103 main event between Vitor Belfort and Rich Franklin, and UFC 101’s featured bouts between Forrest Griffin and Anderson Silva and between B.J. Penn and Kenny Florian. The bouts, which have not appeared on cable, will be part of a two-hour telecast titled “UFC Main Events.”
Meanwhile, on CBS, No. 1-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will meet an undefeated Brett Rogers. Also on the Strikeforce/M-1 Global co-promoted card is a middleweight title fight between Jake Shields and Jason "Mayhem" Miller.
Reactions? Reading around the internet, some people are pissed while some are excited. Personally, I'm in the latter group, as these fights were going to make it on free TV anyway, so the earlier the better.

I guess people are pissed their $200 will be shown for free on Spike in a 2 hour block.
=)
I’ve heard it around the blogs as well. Mixed reaction.

Yeah...
I don’t get it either. Don’t buy the PPV if you will regret it when they show it on SPike a month or two later…LOL.

It’s funny, I didn’t hear anyone pissed that the fights they spent 50 bucks on for Affliction wound up on FSN or on commercials on CBS either.
Oh, that’s right, only the trolls are pissed.

Who on earth would complain?
YOU GOT TO SEE IT LIVE AS IT HAPPENED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who fucking cares if it’s on TV 2 MONTHS LATER.
By that logic you should be pissed if you get tickets to ANY NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB game because it’s on Free TV at the same time.
Anybody who complains about this is a complete QUIM.
The idiots who think: “well this will only get people not to buy UFC ppv’s and just wait for them to air on spike months later” dont realize if that were true HBO wouldnt be re-airing there PPV’s just a week later…. Infact ever since Zuffa started re-airing ppv events on spike BUY RATES HAVE GONE UP!
This counter is not for the “Hardcore Fans”. If it can get over 2 million viewers its a success. If it can get over 1.5m it did its job in not allowing showtime to piggy back on Zuffa’s Fan Base. And yeah… the hardcores will be flipping back and forth even though they saw the fights :)
The bottom line is to the casual fan this Line Up crushes the CBS show and more importantly it helps dilute any traction the CBS show hopes to make.
It’s simple math: by Zuffa limiting them from piggybacking onto the UFC fanbase the CBS show becomes a net plus for Zuffa because UFC will end up being the biggest beneficiary from any new fans CBS generates.

The BE community restores my faith in humanity lol
Reading a lot of the other forums and all the people complaining about this, I just shake my head in disbelief.
which one will the casuals watch?
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Randy Couture from UFC 102.
Vitor Belfort vs. Rich Franklin from UFC 103.
B.J. Penn vs. Kenny Florian from UFC 101.
Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin from UFC 101.
on Spike?
vs
Fedor vs Rogers
on CBS?
Most have said Fedor on CBS Live. DVR UFC on Spike.

If they're smart, they'll do that..
but i have the feeling casuals will want to watch those fighters that they know.. It’s not like the casuals have watched all those main events before..

The trick will be if enough informed ’tastemakers" direct their acquaintances to the CBS fight. Most casual UFC fans probably have one or two people who keep them aware of UFC cards, and/or instigate them to watch it with them. Strikeforce and CBS are counting (hoping) enough of these tastemakers get their less ardent friend to tune in to this unfamiliar product.
The Casual fan has no idea who Fedor even is not less that he’s fighting on November 7’th. This is a great move by the UFC putting on several of their big guns a week before UFC 105, this is going to hurt SF’s final rating and help build momentum for their next several shows aswell.
Dana and company continue to be a step ahead when it comes to moves like these, they know that their brand draws eyeballs the UFC 100 replay drew great ratings and it was announced with less than a week before hand. They now have several weeks to pump this show up on TUF and make sure to give Spike a nice ratings boost on what is usually a week day for them on Saturday.
Which one will you be watching? And more importantly, which one will you advise your friends to watch?

I’ll probably watch SF because i’ve already seen those 4 big fights, my friends who only watch their big shows like UFC 100 will be watching UFC Main Events on Spike.
“If you have never seen this guy named Anderson Silva, turn to Spike around such and such time to catch that fight”
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
Anyone who watches a replay over a live Fedor fight is probably a stinky jerk who I don’t want to be friends with.

I s’pose I’d watch the Silva Forrest fight again, just for the slow mo replays. The Couture/Nog fight would be great to see again, but nope, this ain’t gonna sway me in the slightest.
They better time it out right
Or everyone will be able to catch Silva/Forrest during a commercial break.
I STILL poop rainbows.
Yes… Zuffa wants guys like you (hardcores who visit mma blogs) to simply flip the channel every once and awhile.
You know like when Frank shamrock starts showing that freaky looking animation… or when quadros starts measuring his dick…. during commercials, etc…
You mean the EA Sports MMA footage debuting on the 7th?

Dammit, I wanted them to do my cool “Future of the UFC” idea.
Wouldn’t a special with Bones, Todd Duffee, etc. be awesome??
