Kimbo Slice: I'd Beat Roy Nelson in a Rematch

3975363078_9d4ea2a9d8_medium Mike Chiappetta interviews Kimbo Slice and Steve Cofield points out the following:

Kimbo says he will beat Nelson if he gets another fight with him. The former International Fight League champ was the only guy left on Rashad Evans' team that would've beat him:

"When he picked me to fight Roy, I felt like, okay, anyone of his other guys, he knows I probably would've beaten them hands down. They probably wouldn't be able to hang with me. Hands down Kimbo would probably mop everybody else."

Not quite the humble Kimbo that everyone has come to love so much in the past couple of weeks.

Know what I'm saying, I think Kimbo would lose again, know what I'm saying?

If you were unfortunate enough to listen to the audio you’ll know what I’m saying. Know what I’m saying?

First, if I hear Humble one more time I might vomit. Second, there is nothing wrong with a little confidence in combat sports. If he said, “I would have lost to all those guys” then he should hang it up and go home. I think his phrasing on this is bad, but confidence can not be faulted until it gets rediculous, this doesn’t pass that.

First: humble humble humble

Second: indeed. His job on the show is to show the softer side of Slice. But in the real world he’s got to promote himself. And shit: outside Roy it’s not like a talent fountain in that house…

Kimbo, Kimbo, Kimbo

You proved anyone with even an iota of ground game has a good chance of beating you, I’m sure Roy isn’t the only one on Rashad’s team who would be posting a W against you

by proflex on Oct 2, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

Roy is a BJJ blackbelt and has competed in the ADCC, how would one deduct that “anyone with even an iota of ground game has a good chance of beating” Kimbo?

Don't argue for the sake of arguing....

by Screwface on Oct 2, 2009 3:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He has awful positioning and some of the worst hips I have ever seen. Thats why and that stuff is hard to teach and can only be aquired with time.

by szucconi on Oct 2, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Roy made Jeff Monson look bad on the ground, too. So can anyone with an iota of ground game beat Monson, too?

by Screwface on Oct 2, 2009 4:32 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Because that’s about all Roy has for a ground game. Lay on top of him and pray to god Kimbo doesn’t find a way to stand back up. He’s a joke…..

by coachbarbour on Oct 2, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

wrong wrong wrong. Dead wrong. sorry about you being so wrong. Roy has a pretty great ground game. He plays it consivitive, but his BJJ is pretty great.

Roy Nelson

has beaten Frank Mir in a grappling contest. He’s probably the best pure grappler in the heavyweight division outside of Nogueira and Monson.

I would agree to that. It is just disappointing in that he could likely be much much better if he trimmed down the weight. It is his choice and I can respect that, but he has to take the consequences along with it, and a really big one is public image.

Although I keep getting this mental image of some scifi combination of Tank Abbot and Royce Gracie…

None of the Gracies count. They are, for the most part, on an entirely different level of grappling.

any time i get bored, i go back and watch any of the Sakuraba Vs. Gracies in Pride. Unbelievable fights!!! My favorite is Sakuraba’s use of the standing Kimura after allowing his opponent to take his back. he would immediately pick an arm and lock in the Kimura position, then use that for either a hip toss takedown or just start cranking on the arm like he did to Renzo. it;s something that i see very few fighters use today…the Diaz Brothers use it also, especially Nate.

by erogers72 on Oct 2, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know, both of the times Roy lost to Monson, it was considered controversial.

I’d at best say the two of them are a toss-up.

Funny thing, Roy didn’t get his black belt until after TUF finished filming.

by iiowyn on Oct 2, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He was, at the time, still a better grappler than at least 85% of the HW division. Which would easily make him the best grappler of this season.

But that’s good info.

Don't argue for the sake of arguing....

by Screwface on Oct 2, 2009 5:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

What's funny about it

Are you insinuating that Renzo simply gave him gave him an advancement that he didn’t deserve?

I would deduct that

simply because Kimbo’s ground game sucks, not because big country is a black belt, a white belt could have beaten Kimbo.

by proflex on Oct 2, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo didn’t even make a basic attempt to stop the mount. Or the side control. or anything… all he managed to do was move his arm around and delay getting put in the crucifix for a few seconds.

But he’s not good looking so…

And this is why they had Roy Nelson fight Kimbo, so that they could keep the hype alive that if it was anyone but Roy “Best Fighter on the Show” Nelson Kimbo could have won.

by John Nash on Oct 2, 2009 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know, I doubt that. Nelson was probably the worst matchup possible for Kimbo, I’d think they would have rather had him fight someone he had a good chance of KO’ing and make it through to the next round. Also they’d probably have had him fight a couple weeks later.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Oct 2, 2009 5:44 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I thought the same thing until I read the interview between Roy and Mitch Ciccarelli where he mentioned the producers asking him to fight Kimbo. I’m thinking they weren’t confident he could beat anyone so they decided it was best that he lose to Roy and then they still would have the potential to put him on a ppv card.

how can anyone take Kimbo seriously at this point? Any time he’s gotten anywhere near anything resembling a real mixed martial artist it results in him losing. Ive come around a little on Kevin Ferguson the man, but will continue to laugh at Kimbo Slice the fighter. at least he knows hes no mixed martial artist and admits it. I just wonder when people are going to wake up and realize that beating James Thompson(despite getting handled in the early portion of the fight and being given a racquetball sized ear to pop) , Ray Mercer(Thank you Ray for what you did to Tim Sylvia), and Tank Abbott(In my opinion the biggest loser to ever step into the octagon) does not make him unstoppable. it just means that he can knock a dude out who stands in front of him.

What us the appeal of kimbo… Why do so many fans support him… Is it the beard? The kimbo name? The weird groomed chest hair. I don’t see it. And I’m tired of the argument, gotta love him cause he’s humble… Bullshit… He’s humble cause he isn’t worth a shit in the cage. I doubt he wins a single fight in the ufc.

Here is the full quote by KIMBO :
“I fought Roy with caution. I did go for the kill one time, but I knew to be careful because Roy will bait you, that’s how good he is. He can look rocked, but the minute you go in for the kill, shwoop! You know what I’m sayin? He’s a smart fighter. When I felt like I rocked him I went in for the kill and that’s when I made my mistake. That’s when I realized, ah, this motherfucker was slick. But in the midst of the fight I had to figure that out. By the second round he figured out how to get in, how to play possum and get me down to the ground. That weight was hard to move. The crucifix is not my favorite position. I been in that position with James Thompson and was stuck. Roy had me also in that same position. That’s a position I would really like to know how to get out of. I know some shit on the ground. It’s not like I get down there and I don’t know nothing. I have some skills. I’ll beat Roy next time around. You’re only gonna beat me once. If I fight anybody and they beat me that one time, that’s it. You gave me your best. You didn’t beat me at my best. Now I know how you’re comin’. You ain’t beatin’ me twice. Damn right I’d rematch Roy.”
