i can’t stand that voice-over guy.

I don’t like any of them. This guy or the “only on payperviewwwwww” guy. They try to sound hardcore or something. What happened to a classic sports voice? Do they think we are all extreeeeeeeeme and drink Mt Dew all day?

If they don’t want to use subtitles, then they should just translate what he says, and get somebody that doesn’t speak in broken English to give it a reading. As it is, the guy emphasizes all the wrong words and it sounds ridiculous. Ed Soares to the rescue ffs.

Shogun: “I have the dream of getting the lightweight belt around my waist…”

Watch out, B.J.!! The man is prepared to do some serious weight cutting.

Glad to have helped you out with the proper grammar for that my Brazilian friend =D

Nice to be in a good natured fan competition for once =)

You English is infinitely better than my Japanese and lack of Portuguese. It is only significantly better than my Spanish though.

I love knowing just enough of a language to get into trouble =D

Close fight but I’m still picking Shogun! Counter-punching FTW.

Those statements directly contradict each other.

I can see why you might think that. I’ve made my case a couple times so I’m just gonna say we both have to wait and see.

by Ahhhoki on Oct 2, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

The “counter hooks” thing? The biggest thing for that is distance, and judging and maintaining distance is one of the biggest things Machida has going for him. He has stated that the looping hook Nakamura hit him with was the hardest he has ever been hit before. With how much he talks about fixing mistakes after each fight I think he will have worked on avoiding shots like that and the ones Rashad touched him with.

I think Shogun’s clinch and ground game is the more dangerous thing to worry about.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

by iiowyn on Oct 2, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Does Shogun really have a better ground game than Lyoto? Does Shogun have a black belt in jiu jitsu?

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

by Bandaka on Oct 2, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

yes he does (have a black belt)

and so does Machida, but I’d say Shogun is much better at BJJ than Machida (as Nog is to Mir :P)

Didn’t Machida get his black belt from the Nog brothers? Who did shogun get his from? Does having a black belt from the Nog brothers get any better?

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

by Bandaka on Oct 2, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Shogun has the better accomplishments. Machida did beat Rafael Lovato Jr. in a grappling contest before, but it was done on a take down and top control defending against Lovato from the bottom.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

by iiowyn on Oct 2, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Contrary to what many think, Machida does not train with the people at BlackHouse (he does occasionally, but not usually). Shogun got his BB from Joe Moreira (who also gave it to wandy and Anderson Silva). But like iiowyn said, Shogun has more accomplishments in BJJ than Machida (to be fair, Machida never really pursued a career in that area, but still).

Can we factor in the Sumo skills of Machida giving him an edge on the ground?

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

by Bandaka on Oct 2, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

That is more of the clinch game. Machida’s clinch game against Shogun’s should be an interesting thing to see.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

by iiowyn on Oct 2, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

truth

The Sumo shouldn’t add to the ground skills, but to the clinch game. It’s going to be hard to take Machida down if Shogun is losing the stand up game.

Machida got his from De La Riva.

Lets just asume the “Shogun of Old” comes in that night, I think hands down, if this were in Pride, Shogun would face stomp Lyoto. But this is UFC and I don’t think the Muy Thai can overwhelm the Dragon Machida Karate style without the foot stomps and soccer kicks.

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

by Bandaka on Oct 2, 2009 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

The ring would be Shogun’s best weapon, he would have a better chance of cornering Machida. However I think that soccer kicks and foot stomps would favor Machida more so. How often has he ended up standing over an opponent after sweeping them to the floor?

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

No foot stumps needed when you can drop punch someone’s head off (see Shogun vs Overeem and Shogun vs lil’ nog)

My personal KO of the year, and I am epicly disappointed that the diving punch into guard cannot KO an opponent in Undisputed 2009.

The context in the fight card was pretty huge as well. That card was a decision-fest until Machida of all people saved it.

If I remember right there was a ton of split decisions as well (my memory was pretty hazy since I was in the arena and we spent about $250 on drinks.)
