Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Will Face the Winner of Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin for the UFC Heavyweight Title

Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

Thumbnail_crop_php_mediumAccording to reports, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will be getting the next shot at the UFC Heavyweight Championship:

Inside Fights has confirmed a Wrestling Observer Newsletter report that Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will face the winner of the Nov. 21 Brock Lesnar/Shane Carwin fight.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who is coming off an impressive victory over Randy Couture, will have to put his desire for a rematch with Frank Mir on hold, since it seems that he will be getting the next shot against the winner of Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin. No date or event has been announced yet, but they say that it will probably happen early 2010.

Nogueira will get destroyed

He can’t take shots from Carwin or Lesnar like he did with Couture and still be conscious. Plus I doubt he’ll have the power to knock either down or the wrestling skills to put either on their backs. As long as the winner of Carwin/Lesnar doesn’t immediately shoot and work from Nogueira’s guard this should be a relatively painless win for them.

Sapp relied on being big and strong. Carwin and Brock also have skill…

Question is would Nog be standing and throwing like that if he was fighting against Lesnar? I would like to think that he would the only reason he was leaving his chin open like this is because he knew he could take those shots and I doubt he would leave the same opportunity for Lesnar.

Exactly.

Does anyone think that Nog planned on taking shots from Randy because he didnt think Randy’s power could hurt him? Doubtful considering those tiny gloves & it wasnt like Mir was exactly known as a power striker prior to their fight. Nog has really never been “elusive” when it comes to avoiding damage & he would likely be in for a short night w/either Lesnar or Carwin.

I will acknowledge that I am biased, but this has more to do with me being a long time fan of Big Nog than he being Brazilian. Second, I really do think Nog has much more experience to beat an inexperienced Lesnar (who hasn’t shown he can really be all he is made to be by ppl here on the blogsphere to keep the title after one defense). People are jumping on Lesnar’s ship just because he is big and strong. I still think technique beats strength any day of the week.

being bias is understandable, i’m a little bias but usually only if i’ve never heard of the guys. my favorite fighters are from all over the world. no offence meant but it seems brazilian culture is much more blindly nationalistic than the US (brazilians not liking to fight each other, etc)… just wanted to get your input, thanks! and how can you not like thiago silva?!

by cagefightonacid on Oct 2, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Thiago is a playboy, and I hate playboys

The thing about Brazilians not fighting one another is a myth though, usually people from the same camp don’t like fighting each other (you guys have that problem too, ala AKA), sometimes also people that used to train together and no longer does (such as Shogun and Wandy), would also not fight against each other. I accept this reality, because I wouldn’t want to see a fight where both guys are not giving their all, and I’d be afraid they would keep things back should they fight. Brazilians fight each other all the time, smaller Brazilian shows are a prime example if you can find them on youtube (Bitetti, Jungle Fight, Fury FC, etc). We (in general), do like match ups where a Brazilian fights a non-Brazilian in an international venue such as the UFC, it is more exciting to us in general (but for Brazilian hard-core fans this doesn’t really matter, it can be Brazilian against Brazilian). Sorry for all that I wrote, just typing as the way I see things from my perspective, we can get lost in words sometimes :P

Unfotunately Nog fights like that against everyone

His chin ego is his most vulnerable aspect. If he focuses with Anderson and Machida on defensive head- & foot-work, then maybe. But otherwise this is unfortunate.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Brock & the team are already training to fight him standing and avoid the guard pulls>sweeps and throws.

But man, I hope I’m wrong. After his dismantling of Handy he could be in for some serious success in the UFC since many fans will believe he can beat almost anyone. The Brock fight should do big numbers even moreso than just the Lesnar stamp would.

Look how that fight went, sit in half guard, hulk smash. He went down into guard once and immediately stood up. he knows what his weaknesses are, the best way to avoid guard sweeps is to avoid guard.

I’m not saying they’re 100% the same, but his gameplan against mir, of staying out of the guard at all costs, is probably a similar gameplan that he’ll take against Nog.

by Phildo on Oct 2, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think

Lesnar will have a choice, if the fight hits the mat. The guard/ half guard is the base for almost all of Nog’s game, and Lesnar (or Carwin) will have to be VERY careful inside there. He may have a good base because he’s a wrestler, but so does Randy, and Nog flipped him over like a little girl with his guard sweep.

Brock/ Shane’s best shot against Nog is to employ a Fedor-esque strategy, where you punish him with big shots while Nog tries to put together his crisp combos, and when he clinches up, toss him on his ass, posture up, and rain down bombs (or else just stand up out of his guard) and beat him up in general.

I’m not entirely sure that Carwin or Lesnar could beat Nog from his guard like Fedor did, but I do think that they could sprawl/ brawl

I disagree hears why – Maybe the power of bolth Lesnar and Carwin is much much greater but most fighters Nog has went up againstin his career this has been the case. I think if some how Carwin gets passed Brock Nog would be a favorite going into a Carwin fight also ? Nogueira’s pure boxing and foot work is way better then Shanes and Brcoks if he can avoid that BIG shot and I am not even sure that BIG shot from eather on the feet will put him out cold like you do I think he can win a decision on the feet from avoiding there power . Also on the ground Nog is not winning this fight on top unless he pulls of a sweep from bottom so his wrestling means shit. HE is winning this fight like alot of fights he was got a w in from his guard. I can see him Putting bolth Broack and Carwin in a Arm bar with there long arms. Who knows though thats why they fight them its a fight I was happy to hear about and can’t wait to see.

I could see Big Nog submitting either Lesnar or Carwin. But this kinda sucks for Cain Velasquez. He was promised the next title shot against the winner of Lesnar / Carwin. Seems like there has been a ton of backpeddling on who gets which next title shot these days.

It's All about the Benjamins.

Money talks louder than anything else, and right now after that fantastic fight with Couture the UFC can sell Nog more than Cain, Ex Champ vs Champ, Old School Pride vs new UFC Powerhouse etc..

I do wonder what they will do with Cain if he does beat Rothwell, maybe make him vs Mir if he wins or perhaps Gonzaga?

I’m sort of glad Velasquez will get a few more fights under his belt, he’s a tremendous prospect and throwing him in there with Lesnar too early could do far more harm than good.

by Lyrias on Oct 2, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Cain Velasquez, after every one of his wins, always states that he wants more fights and just more time in the Octagon, and I think that is what he needs as well. Even if he beats Rothwell, Velasquez still comes off as somewhat green to me in that he still makes glaring mistakes (i.e. Kongo fight), and we have yet to see his finishing ability against higher level Heavyweights. I am a fan of Velasquez actually, and I hope that he gets more experience before getting a Title shot because I want to see him fight for a Title when he really is ready.

I think Brock’s top game beats Nogs bottom game.. Brock wont leave space to be swept, as evident in the Mir fight.

Brock wont stay in Nogs full guard.. He’ll go to half guard and control his posture and pound on him, if he doesn’t drop him first.. Brock’s wrestling tells me that he dictates where that fight goes.. If he want’s Nog down, he’ll take him down.. If he want’s to keep it standing, he’ll keep it standing.. If he gets to the ground and want’s to get up, he can.. Nog would have to catch him in order to set up a submission.. I dont think we’ll see Brock caught as easily as he was 2 years ago..

If NOg wins then UFC will shut the fuck up about Fedor's case...

But i think BROCKLESNAR will murder Big Nog…and it will be the never ending story!

Dana will never ever shut up, so don’t get your hopes up.

Lets face it, Nog has some of the best boxing skills and he is a beast on the ground, how does Brock win this?

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

Yeah but Mir got fooled by Brock being hesistant and evasive from his striking. I think tht really tripped him up.

We have already discussed that if Mir truly

thought Brock was only going to stand with him then he was an idiot. But if Brock lands on Nog like Randy did it is good night Big Nog.

Mir is not that mentally strong though. He is known for giving up when the fight does not go his way. Don’t get me wrong though because I think that Lesnar would beat Nogueira in similar fashion as he beat Mir (on the ground by GnP), but I think that if Nogueira were in the same positions that Mir was in against Lesnar, Nogueira would in my opinion be more active in trying to escape those positions (Mir seemed to have just given up). It’s not saying much because I think that Lesnar would still win though.

by iiowyn on Oct 2, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

IMO Nog is mentally way tuffer then MIr....

the problem is Brock’s top game is very good, and he shifts his 300 Lb body in such ways that it traps the fighter underneath. i mean look at how Mir could not get out because his hands were trapped, behind his back. i never seen anyone finish a fight in that position. it just shows you how good of a wrestler he is.

by 1WAYtiket on Oct 2, 2009 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

How in the bloody hell is this old man fighting for the title?
Mir destroyed this guy and was then summarily destroyed by Lesnar. WTF?

by coachbarbour on Oct 2, 2009 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Because he’s a top 5 fighter coming off a big victory?

by Phildo on Oct 2, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

He is a year and a month older than Lesnar actually.

In human years yes,

but in fight years he is like 25 years older than Lesnar.

Do you really think he stand a chance against either of those mamoths? I don’t

by coachbarbour on Oct 2, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

He’s only top 5 becasue the heavyweight division is thin right now

by coachbarbour on Oct 2, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

So should the winner of Brock and Carwin siit and twiddle their thumbs for a while?

by Phildo on Oct 2, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

If the UFC wanted to deny people HW title shots because the division was thin, they would be better off getting rid of it.

You partake of recreational drugs don’t you? You never did answer my origianl question; do you think Big Nog has a shot at either Carwin or Lesnar?

1 that’s not relevant.

2. he has just as good of a shot as anyone else, he’s beaten bigger guys before.

3. If you’re whining about a title shot, give a replacement.

Nog is not the same as Mir.

Mir is the type of aggressive submission fighter who likes to go out and grab a limb and rip it off as fast as he can so he doesn’t risk getting his face broken.

Nog is the type of pasive submission fighter who is willing to take punishment on his back for 2 or 3 rounds while searching for submission attempts. Nog also relies on wrist control to control opponents in the guard, and try for sweeps.

Nog is not a good stylistic matchup for SHANECARWIN or BROCKLESNAR. I predict a 2nd or 3rd round stoppage.

More importantly, Nog has a solid defense defensive guard, great sweeps, and gets most of his submissions in transition. Mir has no defensive guard skills whatsoever and spends all his time looking for subs from his back rather than trying to improve position.

So you’re saying Big Nog will will KO eitther Lesnar OR Carwin?

by coachbarbour on Oct 2, 2009 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

learn how to use the reply button.

Why do I have to answer all your questions but you can’t answer any of mine?

When did KO become the only method of victory in the UFC, did they change the rules recently?

Nog is a top 5, former interim HW champion, coming off a victory against another top fighter who is a former HW champion.

That is how he has EARNED the shot. He has as good of a chance if not a better chance than anyone else to beat Brock or Carwin, so that is why he deserves the fight. If you’re saying he shouldn’t be there, even though he’s a top 5 fighter, I’m sure you have someone lined up who has done more to earn the shot and will definitely win, right?

by Phildo on Oct 2, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

This news made my day. I now hope BROCKLESNAR defeats Carwin.

I’m smiling just thinking about the hypothetical celebration in the cage after Big Nog submits Brock.
