Are you fucking kidding me?
Wow.
I wonder how this fight will end? A KO, perhaps? Maybe?
by toxic on Oct 19, 2009 5:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Definitely KO. The applause from the audience should be enough to knock Thompson down.
I love me some Sexyama!

First Tony Sylvester, now James Thompson
It’s good to see that Overeem is challenging himself.

Watch as Overeem shoots up into most people’s Top-5 after this barnburner!!!!!!!!!

No.
Thompson becomes top 10. Btw I always thought he won against kimbo slice, so he is at least top 100.

But he’s lost 8 of his last 10! I’d say more like Top 150……

I think Overeem should try to KO Thompson by WWE-style clothesline move when Thompson trys to bullrush him, his arms are that big it could happen

I think he should chokeslam him.

As long as they schedule it in Nevada were the test dates are announced ahead of time, anyone on PED’s just has to plan out their cycle properly.
by nottheface on Oct 19, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Passing a drug test is academic, athletes all over America are cycling on and off steroids and not getting caught. That’s not even getting into stuff like HGH you can’t test for.
The point nottheface makes about Nevada is important, and with Cali doing random tests now I don’t expect the UFC to come back anytime soon.

They should get one of those high framerate cameras to show Thompson’s jaw splintering through the air.

Hopefully AO will have mercy and just take him down and submit him.
by JRN on Oct 19, 2009 5:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Are you serious?
Why is this dude not defending his strikeforce belt?? Is it the juice? He looks alot bigger now then when he won the belt. He has a chance to fight Fedor. Whats he doing??

Ya he’s dodging Brett Rogers so he can fight Badr Hari and Remy Bonjansky, that makes sense.
by omigawda on Oct 20, 2009 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He doesn’t “have a chance to fight Fedor”. Strikeforce want to build up Fedor by putting him against other guys before his title shot so the American audience knows who he is. That leaves basically a fight against Werdum which has little marketability.
This year he’s focused on K1, I’m sure he’ll schedule time to stomp Fedor next year.

This would officially be it for me considering Overeem a factor in any way shape or form in the sport of MMA. I’m sorry, but there are legitimate fights in the world for him to take. Tony Sylvester and James Thompson are not those fights.

To his defense it’s Dream’s matchmaker failure more than oveream’s. But with all the talk about “not having the time for this BS” it sure is laughable.

Overeem and Fedor have a lot in common
They really should fight!
by Razzel on Oct 19, 2009 6:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
They have nothing in common, Fedor will fight anyone who is willing to come to him, Overeem will fight anyone who he knows he can beat.

Maybe to even it up AO should let Thompson use his anvil in the match.
Even then, I like Overeem by disgusting KO in R1.

Why is everyone so cincerned about this fighter?
Aside from Buentello he hasn’t beaten any quality heavyweights. He got DQ’ed against Cro Cop, submitted an over-the-hill Gary Goodridge, submitted an overrated Mark Hunt, KO’ed a Korean guy with a 1-2 record, and beaten Tony Sylvester, who has an okay record but was hardly a dangerous opponent.
by KahilBS_Marshal on Oct 19, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Admittedly it’s a bit premature to label AO any kind of heavyweight wrecking-machine, but he is sort of a “new” HW (let the wolves come out…). Prior to that he had some solid LHW wins, although unable to beat the cream of the crop, and has high-level kickboxing in MMA with a fair submission game. If his power really is through the roof with the new physique, he’s easily in the top quintile of heavyweights, while Thompson is probably in like the 4th, lol.

by Robert Downey Sr. on Oct 19, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, well he probably owes his new physique than just that diet of horse meat. My point is he’s feasted at HW because of the underwhelming competition he’s faced.
by KahilBS_Marshal on Oct 19, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hell, I’d pick AO in this fight if he was still at 205.

He’s fought a 6-pack of cans at heavyweight, and it’s perfectly fair to reserve judgment on him before he beats a big name. I’m personally excited because I think at LHW he was losing a lot of fights because of cardio, but was otherwise a well rounded fighter.
Nowadays he’s much bigger and a much better striker, which potentially makes him very dangerous in a division with very few competent strikers (Cigano is all that comes to my mind right now). Fedor or Lesnar would eat shit standing with Overeem, but it remains to be seen if he could contend with the wrestling of Lesnar or keep his hands off his knees 25 minutes deep.
There’s a lot of questions about him, difference of opinion is largely dependent on where speculation takes you.
by omigawda on Oct 20, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And he wasn’t DQ’d against Crocop. He probably should have been though.

This is for the title, right?
At least make it for the title so Strikeforce can save a little face. Just a little.
Surely their own “Champ” doesn’t think this lowly of them?

in the upset of the year. Book it.

Upset of the decade
Not because Overeem is particularly good, merely that he’s so much ridiculously better than Thompson. Definitely a larger ability gap than GSP and Serra.

No Overeem really is very good, but I don’t mind seeing Thompson get another high profile fight even if he’s a colossal underdog.

Alistar is pulling the PRIDE-thing...
keeping very active and fighting lots of fights, except he’s not actually fighting any good competition at any point. At least Wandy, Cro Cop, Fedor, Rampage, etc. were fighting top guys and then peppering in some gimme/stay active/make $$$ fights – he’s just fighting can after can.
