Wagnney Fabiano Claims Injury Led to Loss - Zuffa to Meet With WEC Fighters
What do you think was your mistake on this fight?
My mistake was to fight... I was passing by problems, I didn’t want to say to don’t keep giving excuses, my mistake. He got me on the triangle and I don’t know when was the last time that someone got me on that position in Jiu-Jitsu and Sumission’s career, even in training. Nobody ever caught me on this position because I stand up fast. Because of a little injury, my rib cracked when I was going to stand up and I came back. My mistake was to fight, but he did his work and I congratulate him.
-Wagnney Fabiano speaking to Tatame about his loss to Mackens Semerzier.
It's never a comfortable thing to hear a fighter claim that an injury led to a loss but the upset was so major, especially in the way it ended that it is hard to not fully believe Fabiano that he was battling some sort of injury. I think in order to fully grasp the meaning of the fight we have to follow Semerzier's career going forward and see what kind of fighter he truly is. Maybe this was a case of an injured rib contributing to an upset or maybe this was a major coming out party for a major star in the division.
But, he does join the list of fighters and writers to discuss a possible UFC/WEC merger. From the same interview:
I have two more fights on the contract, now they’re taking all the athletes to Las Vegas, there’s gonna be a meeting with everybody, and suddenly, we’ll have some surprise from there. They said they’ll talk about the athletes and the event’s future, they may want to take some athletes to the UFC, I don’t know. We don’t know anything until November 1. They talked to me that, when I’m better, they want to put me to fight again, they want me back as soon as possible.
I'm not sure how to read that. Does he mean that the UFC said they may want to take some athletes to the UFC? Or is he simply assuming that could be one reason that the meeting is going to take place? Either way the WEC's future remains up in the air.

Hmm...
He seems to suggest that all of the fighters are being summoned to Vegas for a meeting with Zuffa. That seems like a really big deal. Could it be anything short of a talent merge?
I STILL poop rainbows.

you are the golden boy that legends spoke about, the one to bring about the merger of 265 pound fighters and 135 pound fighters, and for this, we are all eternally grateful.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Observer reported in last week’s edition that Zuffa is planning to hold a seminar for all of its contracted fighters sometime in November:
The company is going to be bringing all the fighters under contract in (about 250 in all) for a series of seminars in November. The seminars are about lifestyle, behaving as a professional, financial planning, taxes, performance enhancing drugs, dealing with the media and also going over specifics of the rules of combat, such as injury time outs, what constitutes the back-of-the-head, what happens in regard to a match stopped on a foul and at what point they go to the cards. Fighters will be brought in several different groups.

awesome. i made a comment post suggesting something similar to this… i think after some fighter was complaining about being ripped off by their agent. good to see them going in this direction.

Sounds like the rookie seminar the NFL does every year. Good idea.

Trying to translate his (translated) words may be fruitless.
I wouldn’t look to find any definitive hint as to future workings of Zuffa here.

The line move late on this fight indicated injury to Fabiano. People in the know made a shit-ton of cash. Leland, Fagan? any comment on the gambling side of things?

I actually made a very late bet on Mackens due to someone hinting to me that Wagnney was hurt, although I heard he may have the flu as well… so I don’t know. I didn’t make loads of cash or anything because I was skeptical of the rumor, and I didn’t think it’d make a huge difference either. I still thought Fabiano would win. But I’d heard some things about Mackens being highly underrated. I only bet 10 bucks.

Fagan has some solid advice for most UFC events. I haven’t done it in a while because I’ve been doing the previews plus my own stuff. Gotta disconnect at some point, ya know?

Wow, there was a reason behind why a fighter lost—Imagine that!
If you haven’t yet, download and listen to Jordan Breen’s Sermezier interview from last Thrursday.

It’d be cool if they were sending them to Vegas to tell them that UFC is starting the 145 and 135lb divs.

Another guy crying about injuries after getting beat, what a shame. Here’s a little tidbit Wagney, no injury excuses getting caught in a triangle a minute into the fight when you’re a black belt in bjj. It’s pathetic to hear these fighter crying after the fact when they get dominated, i’ve lost alot of respect for Fabiano after this.

Why don’t you go and join Wagney and Nog in making more excuses to justify them getting embarrased, since you probably the type of fanboy who eats this crap up.

You got me, Raker. I just love hearing about nagging pre-fight injuries. Nothing gets my blood going like fighters talking about broken ribs and staph infections.

He is explaining the specific reason for him suddenly dropping back down in the middle of pulling out, which is exactly what happened in the fight. He is not whining about losing, just giving more information. More information is always good.

Exactly
Some people make it seem like injuries should have no effect at all on a fight.
Maybe it was the interviewers fault, they should stop asking fighters about past losses, because anything a fighter ever says about any fight is apparently just bitchin’ and moanin’

Explains what happened, and still gives the winner credit, perfect example of giving a reason and not an excuse. Good man

There is absolutely no reason to even mention that you were injured after the fight you lose.
If you want to say something, say it beforehand. If you take the fight, it is your decision so dont come out after you lose saying you were injured.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.

What if you were injured, and somebody asks if you were injured? Should you lie?

Maybe you should just be quiet & not say anything,
just like you did before you lost.

Haha, OK, what is the interviewer supposed to do?
Interviewer: Did you have any injuries coming into your last fight?
Fighter: [eerie silence]
I mean, if they say “no comment,” people are going to infer that they had injuries and don’t want to talk about it, which amounts to a mention of injuries. I guess they could fall all over themselves talking about how they never make excuses for a performance and bah blah blah, but at that point I would just prefer honesty.

There is a big difference between an explanation and an excuse…people should really learn the difference.

Indeed. The rage that greets every instance of a fighter talking about an injury is amazing to behold.
