Not if there are no challengers at the weight class

Which after 5 more wins I think there would be.

Rule Ez hurt the Art...

Machida vs. Brock and Silva vs. Fedor

I see Machida thinks like me…

This fight doesn’t have to be for the title Brock can go back to being the Champ after he loses…

But seeing Machida on TUF would be interesting and i wonder if he would bring any fighters from his Gym to fight and be on his team.

lmao i can’t do it either Rampage is a weak coach

by AfroSamurai on Oct 16, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like your thinking...

this is both a realistic possibility, and would be awesome. Maybe Machida will fight Rampage, but that’s all way up in the air right now. If Randy beats Vera, I’d expect this fight to happen next anyway. Rematches with Thiago Silva and Rashad probably won’t come for a few more fights, if they happen. Mostly, I just really want Machida on TUF so we can see more of his training methods. Maybe Yoshizo would come along as well!

I’d really like to see exactly how Lyoto would plan to defend against a 800-pound brocklesnar shooting. Then again, if he does manage to elude it, it’d be kinda fun to watch the same 800-pund brocklesnar crash through the cage and wipe out Goldy and Rogan. New annouce team, hooray!

by lhasafi on Oct 16, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Machida would just side-step the take down and go for a foot sweep. Then KO him with a dragon punch, shuryuken style.

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

by Bandaka on Oct 17, 2009 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The most interesting thing to take from this is that he put himself up against Rampage in his Brazil dream card. Some of the most substantial evidence that he wants that fight. I’ve been saying all along that there’s no better title fight at 205 (and a year ago I said Machida/Rampage would end up having a historic trilogy). I would definitely travel to see their first fight.

I STILL poop rainbows.

As much as I love ‘Page, it’s hard to have an epic trilogy if one guy were to go 3-0.

by pitbull187 on Oct 16, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wrong. When the bullfighter slips a bunch of guys come flying out from the side and distract the bull who then runs away and then someone comes and helps the bullfighter to safety. When the bull messes up, he’s got spears with hooks prying open his flesh between the shoulder blades. Then he gets a sword stabbed into his back, right next to his spinal column, if it doesn’t go all the way in he’s stabbed repeatedly until it does. As he lays there helpless a guy comes out with a long dagger-like knife and plunges it into the back of his neck over and over until his limbs are stiff. His tongue hanging out, his bloody corpse lies there and a team of horses come out and hooks the body up and drags it off, smearing blood all over the ground while everyone boos.

by Dooda on Oct 16, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well ive seen videos of bulls goring matadors into oblivion so i guess it all depends on how fast your help is and how pissed off you made the bull.

Right. I’m sure it’s plenty brutal when the fighter gets gored, but I’ve been to the bull fights and it’s plenty plenty brutal what happens to the bull. Way worse than being gored.

If you clean out your division,

you should be able to move up and keep challenging yourself. If Anderson would just move up it would create a ton of interesting match ups at middleweight. The key is to prove yourself as untouchable at your weight class before moving up.

Machida's take down defense is very good

This matchup is a great matchup imo . Machida is very hard to take down . Size wise Machida can easily be bigger than Randy Couture. And we’ve seen Machida can hit like a truck. I’m not saying he’ll definitely win but I do give him a fair shot. And comparing Machida to Mir …I think Machida would murder Mir .

“He was the runner-up in the 2000 Brazilian Sumo Championships in the 115 kg division”
he probably had some fat on him back then but still , I don’t think he’s such a petite light heavyweight . He kinda dwarfed Rashad Evans for example , and didn’t look smaller than Ortiz or Thiago Silva.

I DISAGREE

. . . with just about every comment that thinks this notion is dumb or may be a “Think scale version of GSP/BJ.” (I like that by the way)

Size is a factor but it is not the end all, be all. Royce Gracie proved that a long time against many bigger fighters. Styles make fights. Take a look at a really big Bob Sapp and how many different fighters approached fighting him.

Like baldspot23 said, “if he defends the belt 5 times then what the hell”

the problem with the gracie comparison is

that he was pwning people who had no clue what the f*** bjj was. nowadays everyone trains in a variety of fighting techniques. maybe machida vs. a non-mma trained, strictly wrestler brock would have huge advantage, but this brock has trained somewhat in how to defend against bjj techniques, not leaving himself as open as he did in the first mir fight.

by kanodogg on Oct 16, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did Gracie win? Y or N
Yes, it proved that you can beat bigger guys with technique.
-—-
Want more examples of smaller guys beating bigger guys?
 - Rashad Evans vs. TUF 2
 - Couture vs Sylvia, Gonzaga, Lesnar (his size didn’t bother Couture, it was the 8" inch reach advantage)

 . . . there’s more.

you pay no attention to what i'm saying

small guy + technique beats big guy with less technique. small guy with technique equal to the big guy gets smashed. we all see now that brock has great technique, was able to nullify a bjj expert like mir with relative ease. the only way imo that machida can win this is if he can avoid being taken down, and we all know how good brock is at taking fighters down.

by kanodogg on Oct 16, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This assumes that Brock is anywhere near Machida in terms of technique. Has Brock ever faced anyone with even a remote resemblance to Machida? What’s a wrestler with a couple of years of mma training compared to someone who’s devoted his life to it since he was a toddler? Brock is good at getting slow guys not known for speed down. How would he be at getting Machida down, someone who’s speed is heads and hands above his own division, or even a middleweight, much less a heavyweight. Speed, in my opinion is the greatest skill. There’s no substitute for it.

by Dooda on Oct 16, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There’s no substitute for Power or the Athletic ability when you’re the size of Brock EITHER.

If Lyoto is going to attempt to just stick and move(or is it kick and move?) Brock, he might get caught in a take down eventually. Brock is not stupid.

A fight between them would be epic but I see Brock taking this. Why? ‘Cause Machida’s punches won’t affect Brock at all.

by BNTHIS on Oct 28, 2009 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hear you kano,
I just think Machida’s techniques are definitely far better than Mir’s for sure.
Mir admitted that his wrestling technique is not that great and he was quick to change his tune concerning skill versus size. He’s now focusing on weightlifting for the first time in his career. His takedown defense was horrible. Herring was controlled by Lesnar because he simply has no answer for wrestlers, we saw that against O’Brien.

Against Randy Couture? Skilled and undersized against skilled and super-heavyweight?? We all saw the first round. It was great, exciting and competitive. Now imagine if Couture possessed Machida’s sense of timing and distance. Who knows?

what would you call him then, a bjj amateur? i’d say his bjj is amongst the best in heavyweights.

by kanodogg on Oct 16, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s amongst the best in heavyweights because he hasn’t really faced too many well versed bjj guys in the HW division. When he did, he got handled by Marcio Cruz and didn’t want no part of Big Nog.

the problem with this comparison is...

that he was pwning people who had no clue what the f*** Machida Karate was or how to defend it. nowadays everybody trains the same fighting techniques (Muay Thai, Wrestling and BJJ).

See what i did there and what the problem with your argument is?

by AfroSamurai on Oct 16, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Forget about that argument, in the end . . .

Size is a factor but it is not the end all, be all. There are many examples in boxing and mma that dispels all the hype behind Brock Lesnar the Beast, the 800lbs. gorilla, blah, blah, blah.

Machida doesn’t sound crazy, dumb or stupid for thinking about challenging a fighter who will probably outweigh him by well over 20+lbs.

20 lbs?

i’m thinking 50+ what does machida cut down from, maybe 225 tops… , whereas brock walks it at around what, 285, 290?

Here's the Lesnar mechanic at work;

Guys being big don’t normally get shit for it, because size often equates to a decline in speed. Because Lesnar bucks this trend, critics fixate on his size. Suddenly we need a SHW division and Lesnar is only successful because he’s big.

I STILL poop rainbows.

by Blackout612 on Oct 16, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hear that line of thought often. It sounds like an excuse.
I am wondering how big does he get on fight night? There are many heavyweights fighting around 220 – 230 facing size disadvantages against guys that fight around 250 – 265lbs.

example: Pat Barry 230lbs. vs. Tim Hague 260lbs.
or Pat Barry vs. Dan Evensen 252lbs.

He won (Evenson) and loss (Hague) but he face a significant difference in both fights.

the bigger you already are, the less a marginal difference makes.

If you’re 200 and your opponent is 220, they’re 10% heavier than you.

If you’re 210 and your opponent is 280 that’s 33% of your bodyweight in difference

by IpullguardIRL on Oct 16, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i just realized that’s a terrible illustration lol

it’s more like:

comparing 230 vs 250 is a 9% difference
comparing 150 vs 170 = 13% difference
so comparing lyoto vs brock is an astounding 33% difference

Lesnar : wrestling :: machida : striking. So much of his hype is based off how he looked against Shad… who is not an elite thai boxer. He can stand and bang, but so can high school kids. Watch his fight with BJ and tell me Machida is invincible.

Lesnar could rush Machida and submit him by bear hug without ever going to the ground.

Forget the hype, look how he handle all of his other fights. He incorporates sumo, judo and a bunch of other styles in his arsenal.

Ben Henderson, Jon Jones, BJ Penn, Jose Aldo, King Mo… all guys who have been able to make up what they lack in skill/experience (or fitness in BJs case) with pure athletic ability. (by that I mean reflexes, reaction, coordination, athletic strength, speed, etc) Brock should be in this category. The argument of the more skilled fighter does not always hold water. That was not the case with Mir/Lesnar.

No doubt in my mind that Lesnar would use his size and athleticism to prevent Machida from administering his skills as he did with Mir.

by ryanwk628 on Oct 16, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ was a shorter fighter that matched or exceeded Machida’s speed in a ring. Machida is not invincible, but he is pretty damn close.

Size will be a factor because it will definitely be 50+ pounds…and hey maybe it is a freak show match up but i’d still like to see it lol. And I’d have a hard time figuring out who’d be the favorite in betting lines…

All of this considering defend there titles 5x

by AfroSamurai on Oct 16, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see it...but

I think Brock in two years will have improved more than Machida will have, just based on Brock’s inexperience. There’s a lot more room for improvement. Machida would have a lot better chance right now, than two years down the road if they both are unbeaten in that time. Still, I’d be interested to see it at that point.

by Kwisatz Haderach on Oct 16, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can tell yourself whatever you want, but Lyoto would get the hell beaten out of him by Brock. If you want to bring up Royce Gracie beating bigger guys, look at the Kimo fight. Royce eventually won with superior technique, but got beaten up so bad he couldn’t continue the tournament. Imagine if Kimo had better cardio and could defend submissions.

Most big guys are as slow as shit. Brock isn’t. Machida won’t get a chance to pull out his bag of karate tricks because he’d just get scooped up, dumped on his back and have his face punched in.

The reason I use the GSP/BJ comparison is because a smaller fighter will go up against a larger one waving the flag of “You can do it! P4P matters! No one can defeat your style!” and then get smushed.

Wrestling is a martial art, just as much as karate.

Like I said, there are so many examples through out mma where the smaller fighter was able to overcome huge differences in weight and size.

Yeah, sure Brock Lesnar can clinch and ground and pound Machida to a bloody-Frank Murrhhh-pulp BUT there’s a possibility that Machida may have a trick up his sleeve to deal with Brock’s strengths and weaknesses.

GSP-Penn blah, blah, blah.
Did Penn make their first contest, competitive? Yes.
Did GSP learn a new bag of tricks, got stronger and man-handle Penn in their 2nd contest? Yes.
Was size a huge factor? I my humble opinion . . . not so much.

Size was a factor. GSP had something in the area of 15 pounds of lean muscle on BJ come fight time. GSP was able to overpower BJ’s guard and pass effortlessly.

The time of vast size differences not mattering are coming to an end at the high level. Every pound matters. Being elusive on the feet is not helpful when a 280lb former NCAA has you in a half nelson. Karate is not magic.

If Frank Mir cant get out from Brock’s top control, no way Machida wins when Brock takes it to the ground.

by ryanwk628 on Oct 16, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes it was a factor, but not so much . . . GSP also employed wrestling techniques, striking techniques and some bjj. Then you realy have factor in GSP’s athleticism.

Time will tell if the vast size difference not mattering are coming to an end at the high level.

It is demonstrably true that size differences matter in MMA now.

But even BJ Penn took more than a year to get a purple belt, and I don’t know of any other of Ralph’s students who came along that quickly.

Brock does not have an actual belt because skill and technique are not the only things needed to earn a belt. His ground game was at about purple belt skill level.

He was commenting on his ability. He may not even have the belt now, but he was commenting on his abilities (and that is the quote that is most commonly referenced). Just creating some clarity about when he said that, which is pretty remarkable..

He may have been

I was really just showing people that the constantly referenced “he’s a purple level BJJ practitioner” was derived from a quote that happened a long, long time ago. I don’t believe that he IS a purple belt level BJJ guy, even now, but it proves that Comprido has great confidence in his abilities (learning & natural), regardless of belt level. Let’s be honest; Lesnar’s not about to start arm-barring guys, but if he can have competent defense, he’s golden.

I STILL poop rainbows.

The scale version of BJ GSP has lots of flaws. BJ didn’t have much, if any speed advantage over GSP. He didn’t have a huge technique advantage either. If anything, he only had a power advantage in the striking department, as well as a BJJ advantage, but that was nullified and so didn’t prove to be much of an advantage.

i can understand BJ wanting to move up to welterweight, but I really don’t get Lyoto and Silva talking about challenging Brock, who is huge for heavyweight.

I’ve sparred grappled against way bigger people before (no one my size there that day or something), and it is never fun. I’m worried that I’ll get a fluke injury (more common against people bigger than you and it’s happened to me before), and even when applying proper technique, your opponent can power out of a lot of things.

Can I be competitive? Only if I have a pretty significant skill advantage. If Brock Lesnar kickboxed Lyoto, Lyoto would win, but do you really believe Lyoto will not get taken down for the entire fight?

my fav thing is fighters who are confident but not cocky. he is a good sport and as soon as he learns good English…he would be much bigger star then now 100%. And as far as him VS Lesner …. i would say Machida by UD. (since its gonna be hard for Lesner to catch Machida) they will run around the ring for 5 rounds. and Machida will win for running faster.
