Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua Try To Out Nice Each Other on UFC 104 Conference Call
Today's UFC 104 conference call featured Light Heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida and challenger Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Anyone hoping for a personal feud angle to build the fight had to be sorely disappointed. From MMA Fanhouse's Twitter feed:
Machida says Shogun is a down-to-earth person. Says Shogun has done a lot in his career to make Brazil proud.
Shogun has trained with Lyoto before during Chute Boxe days. Shogun likes Machida. Thinks he's a great guy and a great fighter.
The one bit of information I hadn't heard already had to do with Shogun's training for the fight:
Shogun says his entire training for this fight took place in Curitiba, Brazil with Ninja, Andre Dida and old trainers/team from PRIDE days.
Machida also talked a little bit about his unique karate style (first is from Fanhouse, next two are from Mike Chiapetta):
Difference between Machida Karate and shotokan? Machida brought back the original karate moves that were eliminated from sport karate.
Lyoto says 1 reason his karate works in MMA is because he brought back previously used elbows & knees that no longer used in sport karate.
Lyoto says he's happy to bring traditional martial arts into the cage, but has worked on adapting his karate for MMA for a long time.
As much as I like both of these fighters, it's hard to get too pumped about this fight because Machida is such a prohibitive favorite. Shogun is coming off of back-to-back wins over fighters who are on the edge of being put out to pasture. Before that he had two massive knee surgeries. So he's not what he used to be, and even if he were, it's not clear that he would be that formidable a threat to Machida.
Fortunately the event features a #1 contender's match between red hot heavyweight prospects Cain Velasquez and Shane Carwin. Oh wait, between red hot heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez and UFC-newcomer-coming-in-off-a- loss-win-in-a-meaningless-tuneup-fight Ben Rothwell.

I don’t think there needs to be a feud between the two to hype the fight. Shogun used to be the number one ranking guy for the LHW and Machida is a guy no one has figured out yet. This is how the UFC is selling it, and I’m pumped for the fight regardless. This is going to be a war, people here are looking past Shogun, but this fight is going to be more competitive than ppl think. I know I have been saying Shogun will take this decisively, but the truth is that I’m just pulling for Shogun because I’m a bigger fan of his than Machida, he can win and so can Machida, but if it’s Machida that will end up victorious, it’s not going to be an easy fight as many ppl seem to think. Shogun will be no doubt Machida’s biggest test to date.

I think Shogun is going to surprise a lot of people on the 24th. He is far from done, and I think we need to start looking past his battle with Coleman — Mauricio is way better than that.
He will hit Machida, and it will be a great fight. I certainly don’t see this being as one-sided as most people think.

What makes you so sure Rua can hit Machida? Because he hit Grandpa Liddell? Shogun was ranked #1 three years ago in a different environment under a different set of rules. Machida isn’t invincible but Shogun sure as hell won’t be the one to prove it.

The best fighter Machida has fought is BJ Penn. I realize BJ was fighting way over his weight but that doesn’t change my answer. He also gave Rich Franklin his first loss. Lately the best guy he has fought is Rashad who I’d pick to beat Shogun right now. I don’t think any of the top contenders can beat Machida right now but by late 2010/early 2011 I could see Jon Jones or Gegard Mousasi beating him. Silva probably could beat him but that fight isn’t happening.

to me Shogun can crush BJ, Rich and Rashad. I can see your point with Gegard, but don’t keep your hopes up with Jones hehe. hey, if Shogun either wins or gives a really tough fight, will you do a 180 on the matter or will he still need to prove himself to you?

I think BJ and Rich were both more dangerous when Machida fought them than they are now. I don’t think Shogun would beat Rashad and according to my MMA calculator I’m right because Shad beat Forrest and Forrest beat Shogun.
(That last part was a joke obviously but I do think Rashad would win)

BJ might be better than Rashad in a P4P sense, but not in a real fight sense.
Shogun might be the best test to date, but on the other hand not too long ago he was barely able to put Mark Coleman, and they were both breathing like beached whales. Knocking Chuck out isn’t nearly the deal it was once upon a time, so I really haven’t seen anything recently to indicate this is the greatest challenge ever. 2006 Shogun hardest test ever? Ok. 2009 Shogun? Maybe, maybe not. The maybes are making a fairly sizable leap of faith.
by toxic on Oct 15, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can accept your argument.
Not the greatest fight against Coleman, even though he was coming off two knee surgeries and a two year lay off. The chuck fight was not that impressive because Chuck was already KO’d twice and one of them pretty bad. But that was the fight they gave him and he did his thing. Hopefully people will look at him differently after the Machida fight :P

I’m kinda kidding here, but really, look at the list of people that beat him in the past decade, he could easily be Randy Couture had he stayed in the UFC. Mark is old, sure, but he’ll still give a beating to most mid-level fighters such as Jon Jones (I put that there to piss you off hehe). Coming off two knee surgeries and ring rust going against an old but a legend in the sport who also had a ring rust, I don’t see the problem…

so you don’t think injuries can affect the outcome of a fight? ok, I say they can, and there has been quite a few instances of that happening. You can be the best in the world, but a bummed knee that kept you out of training will affect the way you fight even against lower competition, ie shogun vs forrest, silva vs lutter (even though silva still won, you could tell it affected his fight with lutter).

I get that you’re defending Shogun, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to question whether he’s got the sauce to do much right now, going off his recent history. He ended up knocking Liddell out, but most of the shots he threw were wild hooks and he ate plenty of punches along the way.
I’m not saying he won’t do well against Machida, and I always hope every fighter fights to the best of their abilities. But the cold hard truth is that Machida is an excellent fighter who has been looking great and getting better, and Shogun hasn’t looked that good in a long time. Whether that’s because of an injury or not won’t matter if he doesn’t get a lot better, and fast.

I accept the fact that people are looking at Shogun through his past few performances which aren’t that great, and I get that Machida is a great mixed martial artist (big emphasis on great) and that Shogun still has lots to prove inside the octagon (I actually did not agree with him getting a title shot already, I felt he needed another win at least against a top fighter). but I wish people wouldn’t look past him, it seems like 80% of the MMA community thinks this will be a cake walk fight for Machida and that Machida is on "another level". You have to take into consideration that two fights back (from Machida), 80% of the MMA community was calling him boring and that he hadn’t fought any legit competition and that he’d fall at the hands of any experienced fighter, now most of the same people are in his ship. I actually have always defended Machida because I myself have always enjoyed his fights, I am a fan of both fighters, just a bigger fan of Shogun. This will be Machida’s biggest fight however and soon people will realize that :P

It has nothing to do with his win over Chuck ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Liddell.
But you know, sometimes you just get a feeling.
I just don’t see Shogun getting knocked out, and I don’t see him getting Submitted. I can’t tell you who will win the fight, but I certainly think Shogun will be his best, toughest, and most dangerous test to date.

His toughest and most dangerous test to date doesn’t really make much difference because Machida is YEARS AHEAD of most fighters (Silva©), remember?

by goodbones on Oct 15, 2009 5:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
As far as these two hyping this fight up, I believe that their personalities and just that they authentically seem to be friends (or good acquaintances at least) will make it difficult to really hype this fight. There’s no real rivalry here, and the only thing that is making them fight is the Title. I have to go with Machida on this (even though I am extremely biased because he is my favorite fighter). If Shogun wins, it will most likely be by some sort of unorthodox strike (like the one he did on Liddell), or a possibilty of a submission. However, Machida can do the same.

Nate, you’re really not excited about it because Machida’s a huge favorite? In my opinion, Machida’s in the same class as Fedor, Anderson, or Pretty Boy Floyd. They’re so damn good, I look forward to watching them fight anyone. The fact that Machida is (in all likelihood) so far ahead of Shogun, who’s a damn good 205er, is very intriguing to me.
