Don't Blame Rampage Jackson: He Says He Isn't a Coach, Anyway
Rampage takes to his personal blog and gives his side of the story now that he's being revealed to be a very inadequate MMA coach (registration required):
So after that fight I was furious. But I still had one more fighter in the locker room who I had to prepare for his fight. Wes Shivers had a tougher fight lined up, in my opinion, and it was a more important fight for me because I knew Wes could beat James. Also James was one of Rashad's team mates that didn't have to try out for the show, that's why I wanted to take him out so badly. In Wes Shivers evaluation the coaches told me that he had the best cardio out of everybody. He had great stand up and great BJJ so I was disappointed when he got winded in the fight and let the game plan go out the window. But in Wes' defense I think he won that fight, or at least should have gone to a 3rd round, but I was trying to keep my composure because I was already so pissed off at Abe. I didn't want to lose my temper and go crazy. That's when I knew T.U.F was going to be the same bullshit as Season 7. Rashad acts so fake and cocky and he wants to act like he cares more about my fighter than I do and brag about how he's a better coach than I am. But I tried to explain to him that I'm not a coach and I won't be coaching after my fighting career, like he might. So as the fights go on and I end up losing a couple fights in a row, I grew more pissed and I let it get to me. So, the whole time Rashad was being a dick and cocky, I just talked to them back in the locker room, in private. Rashad thought the show was about him, about how good of a coach he could be and how fake he could be. But I knew what it was all about.
The show is called the Ultimate Fighter, not the Ultimate Coach. Rashad is so full of himself, even though he just got knocked the hell out by Machida. It was the worst showing of his fight career. Now that he is a one and done champion he thinks that the show is about him. It was hard for me to do this show because I know how fake Rashad is and what kind of person he is. Most of the real fans can tell too, that's why he gets booed all the time. I liked everyone on my team and I chose my team for a number of reasons. If I could do it over I would choose all the same guys, except next time I WILL choose the camera man.
Look, the editing of the show is designed to maximize drama and even support false narratives for ratings' sake, so making any rigid determinations is probably something we should shy away from. However, we should also not allow Rampage to tell us to not believe our lying eyes. Not only has he littered this season with some the least helpful corner advice I've heard in professional MMA, in both the instances of Wes and Abe Rampage pawns off the responsibility for evaluating them to his coaches Zach Light and Tiki Ghosn rather than take ownership for his failings in how he personally assessed them in training. And rather than accepting responsibility for the loss of his team members, Rampage instead retreats to the "I'm not a coach" canard, thereby saying he can't be evaluated as a coach since he's intellectually removed himself from the running. While Rampage can internally withdraw from the position, the reality is that he is a coach and a particularly bad one in a wide variety of aspects.
And we aren't the only ones noticing from the outside. Team Rashad's Brendan Schaub offers some inside baseball on Team Rampage's training:
I'm glad they showed some of Rampage Jackson's team training and just how ridiculous some of it is. Rampage's team actually had a theme that they refuse to tap no matter what, which is just a lack of respect in training. They showed Zak getting put to sleep in practice , which should not happen, and that wasn't the first time that someone on their team got choked out in practice. On one hand Rampage wants to drill the basics, and on the other, those basics do not include tapping when in trouble.
It shouldn't be a mystery as to why Rampage is not an adept leader of MMA fighters. He abhors training himself and has relied on the diligence and meticulousness of the trainers he's paid over the years to provide an external apparatus of training and guidance for him. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, and Rampage has used this personal formula to a highly successful degree. Who can argue with his success? But asking someone who hasn't really practiced mentoring or developed the organizational skills and leadership qualities of a coach to then take on those responsibilities isn't going to yield optimal results.
It sounds as if Rampage is frustrated with how he's being portrayed by SpikeTV producers and I'm certain he has a legitimate gripe somewhere in the editing, but his shortcomings as a coach aren't all or even mostly television sleight of hand.

There is a part of me that agrees with some of the sentiments in some of the blogs. Rampage isn’t exactly a coach anyways, he’s a fighter. But it is common decency to be there for the fighters that are a part of his team.

His smack talk session near the end of the show was one of the dumbest things I’ve seen in quite some time. The show’s doing a great job of solidifying the uneasy dislike I’ve always had for Rampage :/

I kinda like Rampage because he’s a jackass, he’s always been that way since his Pride days, but even though I feel bad for his team, I still like Rampage for his personality.

Tiki is coming off as Rampage’s personal nut holder. Funniest part this whole show was last episode when after an extremely awkward fistbump he said “tomorrow you’re gonna explode….on his FACE”

Tiki is pretty idiotic in the advice he gives. Hey, let’s chide Roy Nelson because he used… wait for it… this will just blow your mind….

Telling Kimbo that Roy was basically afraid to strike doesn’t help anything. So what? He got taken down and owned.

He is a terrible coach, but the editing to maximize the negative and drama is annoying. I really need to bite the bullet and get a DVR and fast forward through that crap.

Not tapping reminds me of old Lions Den stories.
Another point, Rampage literally used a list given to him by his assistants to pick his team. He might even have taken a nap during the eval period. Is that shitty, yeah. I think he is torn between knowing he is not a coach and feeling like he needs to be a coach. Thats where you get the shitty corner advice and strange team mentality. I think Tiki is awful coach and Rampage is just going through the motions, which is not less bad then just sucking as a coach.

Wes Sims was living underneath an overpass in Cicero before the show. He probably hasn’t been training at all, and he’s well past his prime. And he’s a Hammerhouse guy who simply hasn’t adapted his game.

According to Phil, there really isn’t much room to adapt his game
Interviewer: Are you still training with Hammer House? If so, are you going to corner Mark Coleman again in UFC 100?
Baroni: If he asks me to corner him, I will. He always corners me when I ask him to. We never train together, none of us Hammer House guys. The Hammer House is Coleman’s porch. It has a punching bag on it. I’ve never been to Coleman’s house. I think Randleman stole his punching bag by the way. So there isn’t much of a reason for me to go.

This is most likely
the least competitive (read: worst) season of TUF I have ever seen, and I watched that Tito vs Shamrock season. Rampage’s fighters get into the cage and seem almost confused as to what their opponent is trying to do. This last fight with Wes was shockingly bad.

"I'm not a coach"
And in BREAKING NEWS – WATER IS WET
Like some of you have previously stated you not being a coach has nothing to do w/you being decent person and checking on a fellow fighter who has been put to sleep in the ring…and also happens to be on your team. Have some respect for the people YOU picked dont leave them in the cage in a pool of their own blood, knocked out or wondering where their coach is while you’re making a BK run.

I think it is pretty obvious that he isn’t a coach but then he knew that when he signed up to do another season of the show. Where he screwed up was picking his assistants because they suck at this as much as he does. He shouldn’t be mad at the editing when he makes all their shortcomings so blatantly obvious through his and his assistants actions. It would be very hard for them to not edit the show in a a way that makes him look inept and selfish because that is all he gave them to work with. Even the fighters from the show are blogging about how poor a job they did as coaches.

Take into consideration...
Team Rampage won all of 3 out of 14 fights (15 if you include the finals bout) during season 7. It wasn’t like he impressed us with his coaching nor fight results 18 months ago, so its no surprise he is terrible again in season 10.
On season 7 he brought in Juan, but is season 10 he didn’t bring any of his Wolfsliar teammates or trainers. I know it would have required them to come out to Vegas for 6 weeks and maybe that wasn’t possible, but still seems odd to me. Ever since season 6 I have seen TUF to be a plaform not only for upcoming fighers to showcase their skills and personalities, but also a forum for trainers to do the same; Matt Serra’s academies have made a fortune off his exposure on the show (and of course winning the title, but he practically coached season 4 before he won the title and that was the real 1st pub for his academies), Matt Hughes brought his future HIT Squad teammates as trainers 6-months before opeing shop, Gray Maynard got great pub as a “’wresting for MMA” coach and brought Extreme Couture more good pub, sure we all remember Stanky from season 8, but how much did Master Hanh’s exposure (and of course his student’s improved stand-up vs. Big Nog) do for his gym? Why not give Wolfslair a push? That is more selfish to me than leaving a losing fighter in the ring. Not giving his teammates and trainers a chance to advance their careers is much worse than being ambivalent towards a figher whom you only have known for a few weeks. Not that I condone the latter act either.
Also we need to consider that Heavyweights are the most difficult fighters to find and train. Heavyweight prospects simply don’t bring the same balance of agility, speed, quickness, power, etc that smaller weight classes do. The 60 lbs range allows almost old-school style match-ups where each fighter has complete dominace in one area of a fight and are completely dominated in another area. 240+ lbs men can’t put in the same road miles a welterweight can. My point is of all seasons this is probably the toughest one to be an effective coach on. Not that difficulty excuses a lack of effort, but worth noting.
Sure Rampage is a terrible coach, but knowing that I would have hoped that the show’s Executive Producers would have looked to balance reality tv needs with making sure their 16 prospects got their money’s worth in terms of training. I would have liked to see the Ex Producers make sure ‘Page brought more than himself and his “bag-tag” buddy. Tiki seems like a decent enough dude, he certainly has MMA knowledge, and he really does seem to want to help his fighers, but he’s clearly not the experienced coach that Zach Light is or any of Rashad’s assistants. Not saying Tiki shouldn’t be on the show, its just that another experienced trainer or two should have been added.
But hey give Rampage credit, at least he didn’t bring in a body-builder buddy as an assistant ala Shamroids. So Rampage is still not the worst coach ever.

The Wolfslair guys had just finished TUF 9 when TUF 10 started filming.
I doubt they had any interest in doing back-to-back seasons.

Well sort of…. TUF 9 wrapped filming in February I believe, so there were 3 months in-between. But even if the 3-4 Wolfslair teammates and/or trainers that worked TUF 9 weren’t available, I’m sure 1 or 2 other members could have been available.
I could be way off, maybe ’Page offered spots to 10 guys from Wolfslair, but none wanted to cross the pond for six weeks.

u idiot he is the worst coach ever and after season 7 u think he woulda wanted to be a better c oach after that performance, but he doesnt care about the fighters as much as he says he cares about the dollars and tv time, always saying his gonna talk control back, he talks to much and then doesnt back it up,im still a fan but this season exposes his selfishness and his excuses for everything, lets hope he stays off the energy drinks……

the issue really isn’t that rampage is a bad coach, everybody should have known that from season 7. it’s that he’s obviously not even trying and that he doesn’t really care what happens(other than when it makes him look bad)
by yngjzy on Oct 15, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No one is expecting him to be some phenom of a coach. It seems like he’s not even trying with regards to the important things. His corner advise is less than worthless, he leaves his fighters asleep in the ring without checking on them, etc etc etc.
He signed on to do the show and he should at least fake the part. Maybe in practices off camera he does good, helps and encourages the guys. With policies of no tapping though, I find that hard to believe. Rashad and his guys actually game plan, strategize and encourage…….and I can’t stand Rashad as a fighter. I have to give him his kudos though, he is doing an excellent job.

Rashad acts so fake and cocky
Fine, Rampage. Then why don’t you do us all a favor and agree to fight him so we can watch you knock his cocky ass out? Oh wait…
Rampage really seems to take offense at how Spike has protrayed him. Yeah, there’s editing and whatnot, but Rampage provided the fodder for them to cut apart to begin with. Him chosing not to enter the cage to console his fighters after losing is not something that Spike could edit. It’s not like they told him not to enter the cage. If Rampage can’t take how Spike portrays him, just wait until the tabloids get a hold of him and his family. Being a movie star comes with its share of baggage. If Rampage is ever a successful movie star, he better be prepared.

I’ve actually gone from being a Rampage fan to actively disliking the bloke in the space of 5 episodes. Its a shame that he fails to realise that TUF isnt actually about him, its about the fighters. There are young and inexperienced fighters in that group and not only is it shocking the way that he treats and regards them, its downright negligence.
