Bernard-hopkins-10

Bernard Hopkins compares MMA to gay pornography:

"Everybody is different. I don't want to watch two grown men wrestling with panties on. I'm from the hood, we don't play that. To me, I'm not buying a ticket to watch two grown men with panties on, sweating, [with] nuts in their face. That's not me. To compare that to boxing is ludicrous. It's a porno. It's an entertainment porno," Hopkins told BoxingScene. "I'm not wrestling a guy with panties on and his nuts in my face, and they call that a sport."

"I'm not criticizing people for what kind of entertainment they like. I think most of those people have chains and masks in their closets. There is something out there for everybody. I can understand if 90% of women were going to those things but I can't understand a grown man sitting there with a couple of guys watching two grown men with panties on, sweating. That's just my opinion. It's not a good look," Hopkins said.

Panties = spandex shorts?

Spandex shorts = better quickness/range of movement

Board shorts = better for the male viewer, not necessarily the female viewer

Result: Wear spandex to win your fight and get laid (see GSP)

According to Hopkins High School wrestling, by his description of gay, is way more gay then MMA. I have worn a singlet and can attest that they do not turn you gay. In fact, they may breed homophobia. (See Brock Lesnar)

Japan used to squeeze 70+ thousand people into their arenas during the Pride days , I bet there are millions of fans in Japan alone. Boxers, and boxing promoters...

(Hopkins, Arum, etc.) continually embarrass and disrespect themselves and their sport. As a fan of both sports (MMA+boxing), I find myself torn when I listen to the idiots that my entertainment dollar supports. Don’t get me wrong- there are idiots on both sides- but primarily it’s the boxing mouthpieces that spout garbage regarding the other sport.

by faybio on Oct 15, 2009 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

There are a lot more mouthpieces in boxing

The mouthpieces are relatively consolidated in MMA. THE mouthpiece of MMA, who actually gets real news coverage, spouts stuff out. Dana White saying something has the same effect as 10 Bernard Hopkins running around and saying it, because he doesn’t have a collective action problem in trying to find a consolidated message that the sports media can latch onto. I guess Arum and Hopkins aren’t any less influential than the next guy in boxing, but there are 20 or 30 others with a similar level of regard who don’t say anything, and a bunch of them (Shaw, King, Jones, etc.) have even tried their hand at promoting MMA and failed pretty miserably.

If Oscar or Floyd starts talking shit about MMA, then get more worried.

Historical remnants

I wishthere was a good way to fix it, but there isn’t. There really doesn’t need to be more than 12 weight classes, tops, and people are just a lot bigger now in general than they were 130 years ago when the original 7 weight classes were set. Heavyweight being 175+ really stifled things in that regard.

In a way, it’s a perfect comparison. Gay pornography is attractive to homosexuals and bisexuals and isn’t in and of itself, better than, or less good than straight pornography. Much like MMA is attractive to some people and isn’t in and of itself better than, or less good than boxing. I know this isn’t what he meant – but it does fit.

Ok, my money is on Anderson Silva if he were to box B Hop for 3 simple reasons.

1) Anderson is by far the most accurate striker in MMA.

2) Hopkins hasn’t knocked anyone out since he KO’d an undersized De La Hoya over 5 years ago.

And

3) B Hop is 44 freakin years old and has lost to some less than reputable boxers in the last few years.
