Is Anyone Else Annoyed With Anderson Silva?

I guess the crown sits heavy on the king these days, no?  Anderson Silva is by far the most devastating, exciting, and creative fighter there is.  For whatever reason, he hasn't caught on the way fighters like Tito Ortiz, Forrest Griffin, and Brock Lesnar have.  His victories are numerous, one-sided, and oftentimes brutally short.  To feed his talent, for awhile Dana White was forced to shove guys like Patrick Cote and Thales Leites and James Irvin to try and get him just on cards.

But there is something about Anderson Silva now that is bothering me.  These seems to be games  with him and the UFC, first rumors of retirement, then did he get elbow surgery or not, then refusing to fight either Dan Henderson or Nate Marquardt.  And while this kind of stuff would normally piss fans off, he drops a performance on us like what he did to Forrest Griffin at UFC 101 and all seems forgiven.

Part of this is the UFC's fault, who indulge Silva's moods by moving him up to light heavyweight when he gets bored.  I guess I always compare Anderson Silva to Georges St-Pierre, and I visualize GSP standing in the middle of the octagon with his title over his shoulder, gesturing with his hands for the next fighter to challenge him, no matter who it is.  Right now, I don't want to say that Silva is ducking people, but with the recent news that he doesn't want to fight Vitor Belfort because Belfort might not make the 185 limit is pissing me off.  This is a fresh fight at middleweight against a legitimate contender for the first time since he fought Dan Henderson.  Is Silva ducking Vitor?  What does he want?  The Hendo-Nate winner?  Does he want to move up?

A decision has to be made.  If Anderson Silva doesn't want to defend his middleweight title, then vacate it and let a newly resurgent middleweight division with Hendo, Nate, Franklin, Belfort, Akiyama, Silva, Belcher, etc take over.  I won't even hate on Silva if he does it, he cleaned out the division and has every right to move up to fight Frank Mir, Chuck Liddell, Rashad Evans, whoever he wants to fight and the UFC should let him.  I would LOVE to see Silva and Mir fight, to be honest.  I actually think its the best way for Silva to cap off his career is to find super fights that allow him to float around weight classes.

But this stuff that he and Soares keep putting not only the UFC but the fans through is garbage.  People want to see Silva fight Vitor Belfort.  Its fresh and exciting and a real test again for Silva at 185.  So a decision needs to be made, be middleweight champion or don't be because the division has been rebuilt fairly well and there are plenty of fighters and great fights to made for that tile among guys like Nate, Hendo, Franklin, Belfort, Wandy, Okami, Kang, Bisping, Akiyama, and even youngsters like Simpson and Rosholt are meaningless right now.  As the saying goes, sh*t or get off the pot.  Its not fair to anyone that Silva holds this division hostage like this.

Below the jump is my proposal for what I would like to see done

Star-divide

1.  Anderson Silva vacate the title.

2.  Build up a super six round-robin tournament or a straight-up tournament around Nate Marquardt, Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson, Vitor Belfort, Yushin Okami, and Michael Bisping similar to what Showtime is doing with the super middleweights in boxing.

3.  Let Silva ride out his three fights  against Frank Mir, Georges St-Pierre, and then someone like Brock Lesnar or Fedor (by this time, I would hope Fedor had cleaned out Strikeforce, wised up, and come to where he should be).

I don't know if the UFC can go for a super six, it takes time, but I'm really excited about it in boxing and would love to see it apply to MMA.

Nothing Silva does bothers me. His performances in the Octagon make it clear he wants a challenge and will rise to the occasion, and he’ll make a mockery out of opponents that he shouldn’t be fighting at this point in his career (see Leitas and Cote).

I think he primarily wants a challenge, but he also realizes that significant challenges for him at this point in his career are also big money fights. Keep in mind that Silva is 34 and is seeing many fighters not too much older than him in serious decline (Matt Hughes, W. Silva, and Chuck Liddell come to mind immediately). He knows his career is most likely coming to an end relatively soon, and he’s proven he’s among the best ever.

I won’t search for the links now, but it’s definitely been talked about on Bloody Elbow (especially fan posts) about the possibility of Silva vacating the title. It’s unlikely the UFC will let him do so, since it means he escapes the Champion’s Clause and an automatic renewal of his contract.

The only thing Silva is “ducking” are lower pay days than he thinks he’s worth. And, frankly, he’s right. He has made it clear he’ll ridicule outclassed middleweights (which is not crowd-pleasing to see), yet he’ll put on exciting headliners against top fighters in heavier weight classes (I don’t even need to say his name here).

I want Silva-Mir. If Silva loses, Silva-GSP and Silva versus a top LHW (Shogun if he wins, which I find unlikely). Otherwise, Silva versus the top two heavyweights in the UFC… I’m guessing Lesnar and hopefully, by then, Fedor.

Silva’s in a different class that Hughes, Liddell, and Wanderlei because he’s still in his prime. Those three guys are suffering from physical declines from aging and a lack of diverse skillsets.

Anderson may have some nagging injuries but he’s taken minimal damage since his 2006 UFC debut. His body is probably in pretty good shape. He just wants some big paychecks before he goes.

I like the idea of Anderson abandoning the MW belt to focus exclusively on superfights, or the LHW title (yes, Machida could lose).

Good response

Also with the vacating the title, how legit will the new champion be? If Silva vacated, it would be like an interim champ. Everyone would know that Silva is the best at 185 and the new champion would just look like a place holder until Silva decided to put him in his place.

Silva definitely wants the big money fights and he wants Frank Mir because it’s both a big fight and stylistically extremely favorable toward himself. Mir’s size and skill on the ground would be very dangerous for Silva but how likely would it be for Mir to take Silva down? And Mir is too slow and not nearly as proficient in the standup game as Silva. If that fight ever happens Silva will eat Mir alive.

I agree on Mir. His real problem is that he’s convinced he’s an elite striker.

I think you’re missing the point that it’s the UFC that doesn’t want him to vacate the MW title because it keeps him contractually bound to them through the champion’s clause. It’s why Couture never was able to vacate the HW belt… which would have greatly improved his legal position.

Vacating the belt, fighting anyone but Machida at LHW or beatable guys at Heavyweight leaves him in the best possible bargaining position when his contract is over. He’s not bound to the clause, he’s beaten former champions like Griffin and Mir and lays claim to the p4p throne without being undercut by the champion’s clause.

I guess its the refusal to fight Belfort that pisses me off

Silva wanted a challenge at 185 and Dana White went out and got a guy who’s starched both Matt Lindland and Rich Franklin. And he’s still balking.

Yeah, that is just ridiculous

There whole argument is that his fight vs Franklin was at 195. C’mon man! I agreed with Silva and Soares about Hendo, but this is just getting silly.

Silva’s ego is massive. The UFC wants to claim they have the best fighter in the world, so they fed Anderson Cote and Leites. They move him up to LHW because if he loses he’s still the best p4p fighter. I remember the whole affliction counter programming on spike, where it was all “see the best p4p fighter on spike” because of fedor. Now that affliction is done Dana doesn’t need Anderson. Dana thinks Vitor will beat Anderson, and Anderson’s eaten up the hype machine, thinking Vitor is a nobody.

Why shouldn’t it be? He toyed with griffin just to show he could and demolished him with like 8 strikes and little effort. Vitor may have some hands, but his footwork isn’t near andersons, I’ve got anderson taking him down 3/4 times.

I’m not mad at silva, he’s clipping the best in the world at will and only getting peanuts for it compared to other fighters.

If I have to put up with a bit of bitching from silva for me to see his skillset at its best I’d happily do it. Besides, hendo didn’t really impress me in his win over bisping(anderson would have made him pay for telegraphing a week in advance) and I’d rather see marquardt one more time against a tough guy like belfort.

I agree with you on marquardt. Like to see that rematch.

The UFC brass doesn’t like tourneys. Also, a six man round robin tourney? Injuries would destroy that thing

by HighNoon on Oct 14, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nope, not annoyed with Anderson Silva…

and why would any mma tourney be super 6 with two groups, when you can just do 8 man tournament…

by Reaser16 on Oct 14, 2009 9:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not annoyed with Anderson at all. The irritation many B.E. posters experience because of him just makes me like him more. And he didn’t even refuse to fight Belfort, he just (reportedly) expressed the view that he hadn’t earned a title shot.

by JRN on Oct 14, 2009 9:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the problem is that he's been so dominate

that the regular rules don’t apply for who gets a title shot, and they never really have with the UFC. But since Silva is so dominate, he’s beaten everybody, so when an exciting fighter like Belfort steamrolls a legit fighter like Rich Franklin, he gets a shot.

by mason_beer on Oct 14, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d love to see him fight GSP, then Frank, Then Fedor or Brock…

And yes i admit i am starting to get annoyed but only because i want to see him fight…

I want the Silva/Belfort fight...

and there’s no reason to think it won’t happen. I just think this is all about money. Silva, for several reasons, isn’t a huge draw, yet as Dana has said a hundred times, he’s the pound for pound greatest fighter in MMA. So if the boss thinks that, I can understand some frustration on Silva’s part with his paydays. Maybe he should just get guaranteed money and leave it at that. It’s frustrating for us too, but the only thing that SHOULD really frustrate us is the fact that Silva’s so beyond everyone in skill that we can’t think of a challenging fight for him except at heavyweight. It’s not his fault no one can even come remotely close to challenging him. Apart from Machida, Fedor or Lesnar, I can’t think of someone I honestly think could beat him. So any fight that shows off his skills is fine by me. Mir, Vitor, Nate, Dan, Randy, whoever. I hope the UFC pays him well, promotes him tirelessly as the greatest fighter who has walked the face of the Earth since T. Rex died out, and we get to see these fights, because while no one outside of Fedor or Brock or someone may be able to beat him, at least him fighting more often would show us more of his art. Honestly, the Griffin fight was amazing, but in doubt for only about 10 seconds…If that’s the best we’re going to get, he might as well go fight K-1, sideshows, circus animals or whatever, as long as it pays. The fault isn’t his…

I wish the economy didn’t suck so I could pull some Silva/Fedor of my own in the job market

by IpullguardIRL on Oct 15, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

no saying I should dominate in the job market, but the way things are sure suck! And if you have negotiating power you should always use it to your advantage

by IpullguardIRL on Oct 15, 2009 2:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WTF???

This post is stupid and senseless, Anderson Silva is the BEST fighter in the world, when you are the best in the world u can do whatever the hell u want(Lebron James, Floyd Mayweather, Tiger Woods, Get it???) Love to see him fight, as Forrest said he makes good fighters look bad.
