Quote of the Day: "Shogun Rua Will Show the World How to Beat Lyoto Machida"
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
Lyoto Machida, has said that come October 24th, he will have Plans A, B and C. Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua's camp calls this and raises them with Plan D, a blueprint of how everyone can beat Lyoto. Andre Dida, Shogun's coach, spoke to terra.com.br (translated by Fighters Only) about it:
"He is very confident. He’ll face a striker and he is trained for it. It won’t be only a stand-up fight but Mauricio is ready to surprise everybody. Shogun is well-trained. We worked knowing that Lyoto is an athlete who moves very much. We know how this fight will go and have A, B, C and D plans. Shogun will know all the moves from Machida"
"For the pace of fighting that Lyoto forces, always looking for the knockout, I think this fight won’t go past the third round. Shogun will knock out him in the 3rd round for sure. Shogun is going to be the unique guy to show the world how to beat Lyoto. Everyone will learn how to beat Machida so on"

Shogun is the one Light Heavyweight in the world who can truly beat Machida. He has the tools and skills that will give Machida problems at times. It’s up to Shogun whether or not he can capitalize on the openings Machida gives him.

Is he suggesting that Lyoto is always looking for the knockout? Or am I misreading this quote…?

Plan A: Come out aggressive….. get owned.
Plan B: Sit back and try to catch Machida coming in…. get pointed to death
Plan C: Try to clinch with Machida and knee him…. get sumo tripped and crushed
Machida wins.

I think Plans A, B, and C
were from Machida’s camp. Plan D involves Shogun throwing a wild overhand right, then getting clipped by two counter punches.
by rzor on Oct 14, 2009 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that would fall under Plan A.

And Shogun will surprise you when he is still standing after he gets clipped…the question is what will happen when Lyoto gets clipped by punches or a kicking combination or one of his ribs gets crushed from knees…etc
by oousty on Oct 14, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ortiz was standing most of their fight after getting clipped.
didnt bother lyoto much. He just continued embarassing the guy..
Dont know why Lyoto wound be pissed by that.

Here’s the problem with your theory. Shogun’s not the fastest striker in the world, and you can’t hit what you can’t catch. So, the probability of this happening is slim to none.
People are stupid.

If Shogun has the patience for this
I would love to see him play in Machida’s guard for a while, drop some bombs from top. It’s prolly his best chance.
Shogun back at 100%, I feel like this could be as good as his fight with Nogueira.

Shogun's only chance is landing one of those looping hooks while Machida is backing.
And that seems pretty unlikely, but possible.
Still, I can’t see Machida falling here.
However, as much as Machida is growing on me, if he does lose…then we could easily see Anderson come up to LHW and fight for the title…and REVENGE! ;-)

It’s the same Dida that recently lost to Kikuno, and got owned by Buakaw (after 2 good rounds). I don’t believe him.

I know how to beat machida!!!!
Skill!!!!
I hate how people talk like Machida needs to be found out. He is just a skillful fighter. Unorthodox, but skillful as shit! He’s got the wrestling, the jiu-jitsu and the striking. And he fights like a proper MMA fighter i.e. he will play to his opponents weaknesses. He’s not a con man, or a trickster, he’s just a very skillful fighter who has worked very hard and for a very long time.
That said I do think that Shogun will be a huge test for him, and probably the toughest test he could face in the UFC.
by Ilias on Oct 14, 2009 11:57 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, no...
Machida doesn’t fight like other guys, so the usual techniques don’t seem to work on him. He’s a puzzle that needs to be solved, you can’t just use “brute force and ignorance” approaches
by Shaun32887 on Oct 14, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shogun is not a meat head, sometimes I think many here haven’t watched any of his fights from Pride. He’s a very intelligent fighter, that will change pace if the fight is not going his way. What you described here is Wanderlei’s style, not Shogun’s.

Wasn't saying that's his approach
I was just replying to the quote that
I hate how people talk like Machida needs to be found out.
I’m saying that there NEEDS to be a thoughtful, calculating process to beat him, and that usual techniques simply applied better probably won’t cut it.
Can Rua do it? That remains to be seen, but I certianly haven’t counted him out.
Sorry if it came off like that though

Tito did stand in the ring for three rounds and is not even close to a MMA fighter as Shogun.

Now Expecting Big Things... Machida DVD
I wasn’t expecting much but a quick fight with another highlight reel Lyoto Machida finish, which still may happen.
But hearing how confident they are and considering the Machida DVD that is out Shogun may have really learned a defense against each of Lyoto’s moves
Shogun is well-trained. We worked knowing that Lyoto is an athlete who moves very much.
by AfroSamurai on Oct 14, 2009 1:25 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think it has more to do with the fact that they recruited a few Karate fighters to help him prep. I think watching Lyoto’s fights instead of his DVD’s would make more sense too, instructions are not always executions…

When Machida said “[Rashad] cannot defend my style. No one can.” he was being serious. He studies his opponents with his father and finds the moments where they are vulnerable and unable to defend properly and attacks then.

Shogun has got to do something to damage Machida’s legs. Leg kicks would be the recipe to slow down most fighters, but can Shogun’s MT catch up to Lyoto? I could see Shogun getting Lyoto on his back just to slap some kicks in time before the ref stands Machida back up.
That, or slicing his Achilles tendon “Hostel”-style.
