The Winner of Wanderlei Silva vs Yoshihiro Akiyama Will Be the UFC
Today Yoshihiro Akiyama confirmed he'll be facing Wanderlei Silva in his next UFC bout, a fight that was first reported by our own Luke Thomas.
Steve Cofield comments:
The matchmaking possibilities are limitless for a guy with the appeal of Wanderlei Silva. Silva is what's great about the way mixed martial arts book its fights. It's not about the records or an unbeaten streak, it's about the action and appeal of the fights. Silva could go 6-6 over a 12-fight period and people will still pay just like they did until Arturo Gatti's career ran out of gas.
Silva, trying to reinvent himself as a middleweight, looks to be headed toward a fight with Japan mega-star Yoshihiro Akiyama in February. ... It sounds like a perfect fit for the UFC's first event in Australia. Not a bad 10-hour jaunt for Japanese fight fans.
The Silva-"Sexyama" fight may not capture the imagination of the casual American fan but it's a huge international fight with some good questions going in. Can Silva actually get down to 185 pounds and not be gassed two minutes into the fight. And can Akiyama, who looks to be carrying some excess beef at 185, take Silva's punch? Akiyama may find out he needs to slim down and head to welterweight. He was nearly carried out of the cage after his win over Alan Belcher at UFC 100. Belcher is a really good striker but doesn't bring the thunder like Silva does.
I don't agree with Cofield about the fight not having appeal to U.S. casuals. Silva is an established UFC star. His bang-it-out style has won the hearts of UFC fans even though he's lost more than he's won in the Octagon. His epic bout with Chuck Liddell and KO of Keith Jardine struck a chord.
Akiyama also has an excellent chance of catching on with American fans. His dramatic entrance to open the UFC 100 pay per view caught people's attention and his balls-out Fight of the Night winning performance against Alan Belcher won them over.
But Cofield's analysis is largely correct -- this fight will be (even) bigger in Japan than in the States. Silva's years of headlining PRIDE cards made him one of the most feared fighters in Japan. And Akiyama is one of the biggest stars MMA has produced in Japan. Headlining their first Austrailian card with Silva vs Akiyama is very smart. For one thing, there's only an hour time difference between Sydney and Tokyo. Japanese fans will be able to watch the fight live and they'll want to.
From a match-making perspective, the fight is also sheer genius. Wanderlei's loss to Rich Franklin prevented his immediate entrance into the middleweight ranks as a contender. But if Wandy KO's Akiyama in dramatic fashion, he's instantly in the title hunt. If he loses, he'll be perfectly positioned to face Vitor Belfort (should Belfort lose to Anderson Silva that is) in a rematch fans have waited a decade for.
As for Akiyama, a high-profile win over Wanderlei will catch the attention of the casuals and get him one step closer to a title shot. I would expect that Akiyama would only need one more win after that to find himself fighting for the UFC title.
If Sexyama loses, Cofield has hit the nail on the head. Time to cut down to 170lbs and get in the welterweight hunt. I find the mere hint of GSP vs Akiyama to be very intriguing.
In sum, this is just brilliant match-making. Not only is the fight itself compelling to both casual and serious fans around the world, every possible outcome creates other intriguing possibilities. Well done Joe Silva.

The sexiness would be overwhelming.
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.
I thought Akiyama was hated in Japan for his “greasing” against the even more beloved Sakuraba, but was still loved in Korea because of his Korean descent.
I don’t know if Japanese fans would go gaga over anything other than seeing Silva KO Akiyama.
“I don’t know if Japanese fans would go gaga over anything other than seeing Silva KO Akiyama.”
Doesn’t matter. At that point they will already be watching, mission accomplished.
True
But the premise the Akiyama is a draw in Japan may not be true IMO.
oh he's a draw
he’s #1 in the “man the fans love to hate” category in Japan. They want to see him get KO’d but if he doesn’t they’ll tune in next time hoping that he’ll finally get what he deserves.

This is true...
Akiyama is definitely a dra. Here’s an example at DREAM 6 the most watched fight was Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Masanori Tonooka. Which is a feat considering Shinya Aoki vs. Todd Moore, Alistair Overeem vs. Mirko Filipovic and Gegard Mousasi vs. Ronaldo Souza were also on the card.

Akiyama is a huge draw in Japan. Just look at the Dream cards he fought on the highest ratings peak was during his fights.
He only fought twice for DREAM and he wasn’t the highest draw at DREAM 5. He was however, the highest draw at DREAM 6.
Well I guess you can say 3 times if you count Yarennoka becasue it was held under FEG flag ? Anyways from my info Akiyama got the highest ratings for bolth the shows. Dream 5 The ratings peaked at 13.9 during the Akiyama-Shibata fight and for Dream 6 they peaked at 13.4 during the Akiyama vs. Tonooka fight.
GSP-Akiyama would be a slick bit of matchmaking.

GSP would not be able to fight through his groin issues this time around, though.
No man, woman, or small farm animal can resist the unbridled sexy of Akiyama.

I had to read the title several times myself.
I kept expecting a conclusion, like "The Winner of Wanderlei Silva vs Yoshihiro Akiyama Will Be the UFC…
..Flavor of the Month"
…#1 Middleweight contender"
…Sexiest Man Alive"

took me a while
lol. I literally had to read it out loud.
Did Akiyama..
..Sorta try and get the crowd going during the Belcher fight? Similar to Silva?
This could be a slug fest! Me likey
Akiyama = sex
Wandy = violence
Having a fight containing sex AND violence? Amazing.
This will be the greatest fight in the history of MMA.

Akiyama is precisely the kind of opponent that a prime Wand used to feast on. Prime Wand would have crushed him in an ultraviolent fashion, but I think Wand has slipped enough that this fight will be very competitive.
A bit of the old ultraviolence, eh?

I could be down for that.

I don't know about that
Akiyama has much better stand up than Wand’s old victims. He throws straight, crisp punches that should connect repeatedly while Wandy’s looping hooks are still winging in.

Win or lose, the Sexy One should drop to WW I think. If he made the cut and could handle it ok, it would be much easier for him to get a title shot than it would be for him at MW. The WW division is crying out for new contenders, and someone with appeal like Akiyama could find it quite straightforward to fight GSP. There’s also a few interesting matchups for him, Parysian, Kim and Yoshida come to mind for obvious reasons, and I think he could beat them all.
Agreed.
If the weight cut works out for him, I think he’s an instant contender, probably top contender after a win over an AKA guy or someone along those lines.

Saying fans dont care about losses in Wand's case isn't a good thing
He should retire and if he loses it should cement that. He’s taken far too much punishment on top of being ko’d cold 3 different times. He’s past it and should just ride in the sunset
He really loves what he does. He still remains competitive, even when fighting the elite. If medical professionals clear him to fight, who are we to say that he shouldn’t?
Sorry, he Jason Bourned me.
And he said, sort of ironic because I think it was before the CroCop fight in ‘06, that the win doesn’t matter as much as putting on a show for the fans.
He can still eat mid-tier guys and maybe even make one last run for gold at MW. I love the guy, and will watch him fight Ross Clifton if it comes to that.

I think it might not be a bad idea to feed him a mid-tier guy...
the smell of blood on an opponent could unleash the inner Axe Murderer. Seriously, the guy’s fought nothing but the best for years. Feed’im a can for once, so he can get rollin’

yeah, we agree
He prolly shouldn’t be in the octagon with Anderson, but he can make guys like Quarry bleed. I think Silva/Belcher would be a great fight.

After seeing how Wanderlei look depleted at 195 against Franklin, I’m leery about how me might perform at 185, particularly his first time out. Akiyama being a small middleweight means he’s guaranteed to be comfortable, plus Aki can strike a bit and is probably a better grappler. I don’t think this will be an easy one for Wand.
Oh, and also
Not a bad 10-hour jaunt for Japanese fight fans.
Are Japanese fight fans in the habit of taking long, expensive flights? This seems kinda like saying that a UFC event in the UK is “not a bad 10-hour jaunt for east coast Americans.”
plus also
Silva could go 6-6 over a 12-fight period…
He’d actually have to beat Akiyama just to accomplish this right now.
...
There are plenty of Japanese in Sydney mate. No flight needed.
This could be really huge. Wanderlei obviously will have a fan base wherever he goes and I’m guessing Akiyama would be big with the Japanese/Korean communities (i actually have no idea about this…is he known to the average japanese person or just in fight circles?).
Regardless i think if the UFC comes to Sydney it will sell out the acer arena, no problems.

I don’t really find Akiyama/GSP all that intriguing. He’s really worse at everything and has no discernible advantage, would end up getting beaten up on his back the whole fight.
Awesome
War Wanderlei!!!!!!!!
Get him!

Wanderlei Silva Gameplan:
1 Grit teeth and swing for the fences
2 Knees
3 Repeat
Keep firing Assholes!
Never trust a man with no shirt on.
That's the old-school Wand ...
New school Wand doesn’t believe in step #2
I think Akiyama is a little closer to the camera than Dana, so the perspective is a bit skewed.
That said, who wouldn’t have a big head if they were as sexy as Akiyama?

Holy Shit. I never realized how huge Ishii’s melon is. Good thing for Yoshida he won’t be able to head butt.
His giant head rivals Tito’s.

Why did you have to mention GSP vs. Akiyama! I am having a Sexy overload now!
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.
I like it
I am having a Sexy overload now!
But is it truly practical to yell out in the act?
I STILL poop rainbows.
