Heavyweights Leading the Way in Knockouts (Tapology)

Brian-bowles1_medium Brock_medium

According to new data published over at Tapology, Heavyweight fighters have been consistently delivering more finishes due to strikes in professional MMA bouts over the course of the past two years. The data, while inconclusive, supports the commonly-held opinion that lighter-weight fighters head to decisions more often than their heavier counterparts. What is unclear, however, is whether this trend is a result of an apparent skill gap between the weight classes--with the lighter weight classes possessing more skill, therefore being more difficult to finish--or whether it is simply the result of a lack of concussive power possessed by fighters under the 170lb limit.

Weight Class Fight Count KO/TKO Submission Decision
Bantamweight – 135 lbs
43 21% 28% 51%
Featherweight – 145 lbs 82 27% 19% 54%
Lightweight – 155 lbs 205 27% 32% 41%
Welterweight – 170 lbs 135 40% 21% 39%
Middleweight – 185 lbs 157 35% 36% 29%
Light Heavyweight – 205 lbs 92 55% 15% 29%
Heavyweight – 265 lbs 91 65% 22% 13%
Super Heavyweight – Over 265 lbs 6 50% 50% 0%

They’re bigger with more mass and momentum, and a head is still a head whether its on a HW or a LW.
