Quote of the Day: The WEC Won't Be Adding a Flyweight Division Anytime Soon
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
WEC matchmaker, Sean Shelby talked to Sherdog.com and said that plans for adding a 125-lb division are on hold:
When I first came in earlier this year, my goal was to build up the divisions we already had. We have built quality depth into 135 and 145, and I am working on 155 now. With the number of fights we are doing now, 125 is just not a viable division for us at this moment.
Every fight we would be doing at 125 would take a spot from our already established divisions. We have worked hard to create the depth we have, and I just don’t want to sacrifice that. We will do the flyweights, but it has to be the right time.
When we feel we can support the division the way it needs to be supported, then we will bring in the best flyweights in the world. We will be doing more shows next year, and, as [WEC General Manager] Reed [Harris] stated, we will be doing pay-per-view as well, so hopefully we will see the 125ers sometime in 2010.

the only way i see this working,
is if they lump all their eggs in one PPV basket..
which would not be good for them also i think.

I agree, don’t think it’s a smart idea

Dammit!
As a 105 lbs pound weakling, I love watching the scrappier little guys go at it. Even if they don’t have a full division, just bring ’em in and let ’em fight as an introduction match-up for the weight class.

Crap!
I’d rather they dump LW (sending the top half-dozen or so to the UFC) and build up FW.
Spending time and effort building up their ‘minor league’ LW division rather than building another world class division to go with the awesome 135 & 145 divisions doesn’t make sense to me.
I agree
Both promotions are owned by the same parent company. They already rolled the best of their heavier divisions into the UFC. Why keep around a LW division when you have so much talent available for a Flyweight division here in the US. It would finally provide some US competition to the Japanese counterpart. I also believe Flyweight will also be crucial for bringing on more Latin American and Mexican fighters which will really help the UFC and MMA make a solid push into that emerging market.

UWC - Flyweights
The UWC will take the lead in this division. Sherdog called their latest Flyweight fight the greatest Flyweight fight to date on this side of the Pacific at their Oct 3rd show. John Dodson and Pat Runez put on one of the best fights this year in any weight class…
The UWC is going to have the BEST Flyweights in the world and give these guys a place to fight.
If you haven’t seen the Dodson vs. Runez Flyweight Title Fight yet log on to http://www.UWCMMA.com and watch it VOD – Video On Demand…
That, I suspect, is Zuffa's plan.
Let the UWC build up Flyweight, and if they fail then they fail and it doesn’t cost Zuffa antyhing.
But if the UWC succeeds, then Zuffa just buys the UWC.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
