WHAT?  YOU GUYS DON'T WANT TO SEE HUGHES-ST.PIERRE IV, V, AND VI?

"I don’t have any problems with Koscheck or Swick. They’re just guys who want to beat someone who has been in the sport for awhile, to beat someone who has held the belt." - Former UFC welterweight champ Matt Hughes (Heavy.com)

"There are plenty of older guys out there with big names who can fight, too." - Hughes, like Carlos Newton, Dave Menne, and Renato Verissimo, right?

"I like to take fights where I’ve got something to win. If I take a fight against Mike Swick or Josh Kosheck, I’ve really got nothing to gain from that fight besides a paycheck and beating somebody up." - Hughes.  Who are you going to fight then?

"Royce Gracie was a big fight, you know? It was a huge name, a guy that had won the old tournaments in the beginning." - Hughes

"Those are the kinds of fights that gets me into the gym ready to train and work." - Hughes.

Star-divide

THIS WEEK IN HEAVYWEIGHT SUICIDE WATCH

"I was very, very disturbed after the loss to Dos Santos."  - Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, commenting on his loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 103. (Fighters Only)

"I was in such a state that I wished to hang myself in my hotel room so I would be gone." - Filipovic.  Someone needs to make sure Mirko and Andrei Arlovski do not get within 50 feet of one another.

"I am seriously thinking about hiring a psychiatrist to help me out. I have already made some calls about it." - Filipovic.  Probably a good idea.

"If someone offered me millions of dollars to quit my career right now I would not accept it. [Fighting] is my life and I don’t know any other way to live." - Filipovic.  What about the fishing trip?

I BELIEVE IN RESPECT BY DISRESPECTING YOU

"I feel like I have paid my dues and so have a lot of fighters waiting for their shot." - Heavyweight contender Shane Carwin, who's set to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 106. (Five Ounces of Pain)

"Brock is what they call a ‘Draw,’ he sells tickets, I am what they call a ‘Fighter,’ I fight who I am told to fight the way my coaches train me too." - Carwin, who will find out the hard way that Brock Lesnar is also a "fighter".

"To me this sport is as much about respect and honor as it is paychecks sound bites." - Carwin.  Please live up to this ideal and stop giving interviews.

TITOWNED

"The only thing Coleman is afraid of when it comes to Tito is contracting swine flu from that dirty ass d-bag." - Mark Coleman's trainer Mike DiSabato, defending Coleman after comments were made by Tito Ortiz.  Coleman pulled out of their UFC 106 bout. (Fighters Only)

"We all know where he lays his head down at night." - DiSabato.

"Tito wants to get personal with a legend? OK, let's get personal - we can all go to our porn collections and watch what Tito sleeps with night after night." - DiSabato.  Unfortunately, there's such a disconnect between Jenna now and Jenna then, that it really ruins the whole process.

WHITE NOISE

"I don't remember being pissed about the Kimbo stoppage." - UFC President Dana White (Bloody Elbow)

"Then Roy jumps up and looks at me like 'What the [expletive] Dana?' Like I'm up I'm over there telling the ref, 'Don't stop this fight'. Like I have input or something. That was my first beginning of getting [expletive] irritated with Roy Nelson." - White, not Jared Shaw.

"Then he runs over and asks me to go get him a [expletive] Whopper. That was my second starting to get [expletive] irrated with Roy Nelson." - White, walking a line dangerously close to Brock Lesnar's Bud Light fiasco.

PARTING SHOTS

"It looked like a couple of high school kids, a barroom brawl.  The fat biker dude took his vest off and put ranch dressing on his (chest)." - UFC Heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, commenting on the Kimbo-Roy Nelson fight.  I have Lesnar actually watching the fight at +350. (Yahoo)

"I was never a Fedor fan. ...He is just another man to me. I'm just going to go in there and I'm going to smash him." - Brett Rogers, good luck with that.

'The UFC only has like three top lightweights: Gray Maynard, BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar, so this way I can fight most of the top fighters in the world outside of the UFC." - Jorge Masvidal.  (Tapology)

"Is there anyone better than me? For sure, but we don’t know where he is." - UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.  (Fighters Only)

"Do you know who I am? I will kill you and rape your family." - Junie Browning, everyone. (Las Vegas Review-Journal)

I love how people defend Brock, saying he’s just “playing the heel,” he knows how to play “the villain” and knows that people will pay to see him fight in case he gets KO’d.

How is what Carwin is doing ANY different? He’s playing up the babyface angle, trying to turn it into a showdown of GOOD© against EVIL® and trying to make more money for himself by promoting the fight that way.

Yet the people who defend Lesnar always seem to be the ones screeching about Carwin. Maybe that means he’s doing his job well?

by gzl5000 on Oct 11, 2009 8:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I believe it has more to do with Carwin contstantly contridicting himself than being pissed that he’s trying to play babyface.

Well, for one, Fagan nailed it pretty good with the “respect by disrespect” thing. He’s also saying Lesnar is a draw and he’s a fighter, yet the entire point of what he’s saying in these interviews is…to try and draw fans into watching the fight.

Assuming you’re right and he is lying in order to draw in fans, instead of honestly answering questions that someone asked him – where does the constantly come into play?

It’s the same reason people hated the Rocky Maivia character. It’s boring. Annoying. Self-righteous. Brock Lesnar may hunt down homosexuals in his backyard, but at least he’s entertaining.

So it's OK for Hughes to beat up on a past-his-prime legend, but not Kos or Swick?

But it was Royce Gracie! and besides, Gracie wasn’t losing matches when he returned to the UFC, he was still winning and very competitive.

He's Matt frickin Hughes

The fact that Gracie is a legend doesn’t explain why Kos or Swick can’t get their crack at Hughes which was the original point.

by hlebtasic on Oct 12, 2009 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because Hughes vs Gracie was a mega fight while fighting any AKA member is not, he doesn’t want to be a stepping stone and he shouldn’t have to be.

Besides is there any point to this damn division? I mean soon 3 out of the top 5 will AKA and they will continue to duck each other.

True stuff, everyone is just fighting for 2nd place right now, only way they can beat him is if all three fight him at the same time.

Betting odds would still be GSP -220 AKA +175

I guess my point was that Hughes used Gracie as a stepping stone, why can’t the AKA guys. Rashad used Chuck, Franklin used Shamrock, Brock used Randy. That’s what happens to legends when they die. I didn’t really voice that well.

by hlebtasic on Oct 12, 2009 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hughes was already a Hall of Famer, the Gracie win was just the cherry on top. Liddell was coming of a big win and if he won against Evans he would have been in the title picture again, same goes for Randy (to stay champ) and Shamrock.

The biggest difference in the names you mentioned to whats going on here is that both guys had something to gain from there fights, in this case there is no reason for the fight.

Good points, but I think it just brings up the fact that Hughes has absolutely nothing to gain from any fight anymore.

Besides Dennis Hallman of course, revenge is always a good reason to fight someone. Besides that then no not really, not sure why he is even still around to be honest.

Well actually maybe Hughes vs Serra II, but that’s about it.

He should have told them that he would fight one of them, but only the best of the three, so they should fight to determine that.

Hw wants a huge name. Ok well who is huge name to you Matt? Ken Shamrock? Tank Abbott? Do you want BJ to come up to WW again?

I think Matt realizes that he is too old too hang with Fitch, Swick, Koscheck, Alves, Condit etc..

I guess we could always see if Lytle is available again.

I think he’s angling for a fight that was offered to him but didn’t end up happening. A middleweight title shot against Anderson. When they couldn’t find a main event fight for UFC 105, they asked Matt if he’d take the fight and he said yes. Anderson said no.

by bigdmmafan on Oct 11, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention

I don’t think Matt would have time to put on 15 lbs of muscle, and Silva probably can’t come down much further than 185

by Shaun32887 on Oct 11, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they’d attempt to sell it on the myth that Anderson’s one weakness is wrestlers. You’d think that beating Hendo would have put that to rest, but apparently not for some people. It might have got some casuals to tune in, but hardcores would shit all over it.

http://www.fourouncestofreedom.com

by Beer Monster on Oct 11, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hendo did outwrestle him for an ugly first round. However, I don’t think Hughes is as big or strong as Hendo, nor was his wrestling a factor in the 2nd round…

…and Hughes isn’t nearly as good of a wrestler as Hendo.

by Ask Jeebs on Oct 11, 2009 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus, as pedestrian as Hughes’ striking is, he has nothing with which to try and set up take-downs against a much bigger and more athletic fighter. At least Hendo’s big right hand can keep Silva somewhat honest.

Rogers has a BIG mouth

It’s one thing to not let your opponent inside your head, but he’s getting ridiculous. I’ve almost convinced myself that he genuinely doesn’t know who Fedor is, and his handlers are keeping it that way.

by Shaun32887 on Oct 11, 2009 9:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think that’s taken out of context a bit. He’s not saying he dislikes Fedor, simply that he doesn’t follow him and doesn’t know a ton about him.

http://www.fourouncestofreedom.com

by Beer Monster on Oct 11, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not just here

any time he talks about Fedor, he sounds WAY too confident. Again, I understand that you need that going into a fight, but he’s taking it to a whole new level. The fact is, Fedor is a dangerous opponent, and you need to show him some respect; Rogers is making it sound like he’s fighting a can.

by Shaun32887 on Oct 11, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really don’t think Rogers knows what he’s up against. He’s confident because he’s like an ostrich with his head in the sand.

Lest we forget

It wasn’t too long ago that Rogers was changing tires at a local Sam’s Club. He doesn’t exactly have a storied history in the sport, so why are people shocked that he doesn’t know much about a heavyweight that mostly made his name years ago in Japan?

by lowellthehammer on Oct 12, 2009 2:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so why are people shocked that he doesn’t know much about a heavyweight that mostly made his name years ago in Japan?

Because he’s fighting him. It seems like it would be a good idea to know what you’re up against.

by Shaun32887 on Oct 12, 2009 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So it would seem, but you can’t tell me you don’t know of a handful of fighters who make it a point that they don’t research or gameplan in particular for specific opponents. Koscheck comes to mind.

And didn’t Rogers say this same kind of stuff about Arlovski? Seems to me that all of the hardcores are just pissed off that Rogers isn’t making a giant deal about fighting their hero.

Not commenting on effectiveness

I’m just saying that it isn’t like he’s intentionally being disrespectful, he’s just saying he doesn’t know much about Fedor and everyone acts all pissed off about it as if he’s some cocky asshole. Plenty of other fighters do the same thing, it just seems like Rogers gets a bunch of hate because he doesn’t know about the internet community’s favorite fighter.

by lowellthehammer on Oct 12, 2009 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It just sounds a bit ridiculous that’s all . If Belfort said he didn’t know a lot about Silva and he’s gonna smash him wouldn’t it sound weird ? This is the same . Rogers doesn’t have to be Fedor’s fan club manager but that same cockiness blew up in Sylvia’s and Andrei’s face…

by JoelMan on Oct 12, 2009 3:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Would it also be a good idea to tell the world exactly what he’s doing for training and his gameplan for the fight?

by Phildo on Oct 12, 2009 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, time scale is no excuse

I’ve been an MMA fan for a little over a year, but I’ve seen most of Fedor’s big fights.

I would expect an opponent to make a similar effort

by Shaun32887 on Oct 12, 2009 2:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would say Rogers probably prioritizes training over watching tape, or lets his trainer watch the tape for him and form the gameplan. Personally I wouldn’t think this isn’t the best decision, but it has worked well for him thus far so who are we to tell him otherwise?

by lowellthehammer on Oct 12, 2009 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

bleh , training over watching tape ? they train 6-8 hours a day , he could’ve watched all of Fedor’s fight in one day if he wanted to. My guess he did btw , this is all talk.

I dont think Rogers or Carwin have a chance at beating Fedor or Brock. Maybe I will eat my words and be wrong but I just think both men are getting too much hype.

Especially Fedor/Rogers I could easily see this going like Fedor/Sylvia. Rogers has no ground game and Fedor is one of the best in the world on the ground.

As for Carwin/Lesnar I dont think Lesnar will want to stand with him and so if it goes to the ground I just hope Brock can show us some of those new submissions.

Lesner Shmesner

It’s just funny to me… Lesner has gotten a lot of soft fights going into the UFC, and I’m sorry but Randy Couture is washed up, and I don’t think he’s nearly the “figther” so many fan boys are making him out to be.

Carwin has gone the hard road, and fought real competition away from the big lights.

by Machida Hadouken on Oct 12, 2009 12:32 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Lesner has gotten a lot of soft fights going into the UFC

First of all it’s Lesnar, with an A. Second of all, that’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. Name me another fighter whose second, third, and fourth pro fights were against guys anywhere near the caliber of Frank Mir, Heath Herring, and Randy Couture. And Carwin has faced tougher competition? Was that a joke?

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

Real competition like Sherman “The Tank” Pendergarst. LOL, OK! XD

I’m consistently surprised by how hard people’s opinions have switched on Brock Lesnar by watching him beat Frank “I beat Wes Sims” Mir.

Before the Mir fight, the entire internet community was basically saying Brock was going to lose and how he was a joke and his wins were flukes. Now after the UFC 100 hype machine he’s the best HW in the world and nobody can beat him? It’s pretty amazing.

Even the author of these week in quotes deals keeps throwing little “BTW CARWIN IS GOING TO GET WRECKED” comments after any Brock/Carwin quote in the last few weeks. I’d love to see his write up on why exactly he thinks that is. At best I’d say this fight is very even, as Carwin nullifies pretty much every advantage Brock has. How did his amazing NCAA Div 1 wrestling fare when he was facing a Greco wrestler who was 60 pounds lighter than him? But now he’s going to just steamroll a guy who’s an NCAA Div 2 champ and just as big?

Have at it Fagan, what’s your breakdown on how Brock is going to “destroy” Carwin? I’d love to hear it.

Maybe because he does everything Carwin does, only better?

You think he’s going to put him on his back and grind out a decision or GnP with those weak little hammer punches he uses to say “REF, STOP IT BEFORE HE GETS UP!”?

Or a KO with the super slow and sloppy “hope one of these hits” strikes he throws?

Interesting theory

by Jason H. on Oct 12, 2009 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't get ridiculous now

Lesnar has only ground out one decision “with those weak little hammer fists.” He’s stopped both Randy and Mir.

Not saying Lesnar isn't the favorite

But Carwin might have better hands and enough wrestling to nullify Brock’s advantage.

by hlebtasic on Oct 12, 2009 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Randy fight showed that when facing another wrestler, Brock’s wrestling is no longer an advantage. So when you turn it into a striking match, which guy has the better striking? Watch some tape on either dude, it’s pretty self explanatory.

by Jason H. on Oct 12, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Which guy has the better striking?

Lesnar easily. Carwin was getting tagged left and right by Gonzaga and got rocked badly, before his miracle punch. If it was Lesnar, he would have been out cold. Gonzaga also got Carwin to the ground with ease.

Carwin’s striking looks great against the Neil Wains and Sherman Pendergarsts of the world. Perhaps you should consider watching some tape as well.

by Scott Haber on Oct 12, 2009 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Easily?

Gonzaga is a better striker than anybody Lesnar has faced. I think both guys have similar striking games. KO power in both fists but a little sloppy. If Carwin keeps it standing he has plenty of ability to knock Brock out.

by hlebtasic on Oct 12, 2009 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gonzaga is a better striker than anybody Lesnar has faced.

So what? Carwin was eating punches throughout that fight, if he doesn’t do a lot of work on his defense he is going to get KTFO’d.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Oct 12, 2009 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably. I don’t think Carwin has great striking either. But using the Gonzaga fight to compare Carwin’s striking to Lesnar’s is misleading, which was the argument. Neither of these guys have great striking. Both of these guys have power. Carwin has a decent chance.

by hlebtasic on Oct 12, 2009 1:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm still not sold on Gonzaga as a "striker"

Does the guy have KO power? Definitely…but all he does is wing bombs and head kicks. Technically sound he ain’t.

Gonzaga is a better striker than anybody Lesnar has faced.

I’d argue that Mir and Herring are both better strikers than Gonzaga. Is Gabe more capable of knocking guys out? Perhaps, but Mir and Heath are much more technical with their stand-up.

by VegasBatman on Oct 12, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brock was winning that fight with Randy. Couture was doing a great job preventing the takedowns, but he was always on the defensive. Brock also has tighter striking, maybe not 1-punch-ko like Carwin, but he also won’t get tagged as often.

Brock beat Herring and Mir using nothing but his size and strength advantage. Both guys are mid-level gatekeepers for the HW divison…Mir was the champ during the weakest era in UFC’s HW division in 10 years, when all the decent HW talent was in PRIDE. He beat Tank Abbott and Wes Sims to get a title shot vs Tim Sylvia, then came back to lose to Marcio Cruz and Brandon Vera.

Herring has been a gatekeeper since the early 2000’s, the guy who’s good enough to hang on top level but not good enough to be a champ.

Brock has a legitimate win against Couture, but that was a fight he was losing until he caught Randy with a big punch. Take away Brock’s massive size advantage and what exactly does he have over Carwin or anyone else in the division?

by Jason H. on Oct 12, 2009 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

for real?

take away anderson silva’s speed and power and what does he have over the rest of is division. duh!

by bdw on Oct 12, 2009 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

his speed is what makes him able to use his technique so effeciently. he doesn’t have the best takedown defense. his technique alone would not get him past hendo or marquardt. i’m not bashing silva, but saying that brock is only good b/c of his size is redonk. if that where the case, bob sapp, choi, zulu and giant silva would be dominant cahmps. brock’s size and strenght help make up for the lack of decades of experience his opponents have over him, and herring and mir both weigh around 250+, so they are not exactly pipsqueaks. brock has good skills and technique for someone with as little fight experience that he has and amazing speed for someone his size. :)

by bdw on Oct 12, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not saying that Brock has no skills and is size only. Just wanted to point out that Spider besides speed and power has technique, flow, accuracy, instinct (talking about striking) and a lot of other stuff.

Talking about Brock…it’s obvious that he has skills…and I agree with you.

This was in Brock’s SECOND AND THIRD PRO FIGHTS. Name me anyone else who has fought that caliber of competition so early in their career. Anyone?

He beat Tank Abbott and Wes Sims to get a title shot vs Tim Sylvia, then came back to lose to Marcio Cruz and Brandon Vera.

And you conveniently leave out his recent victory over Minotauro Noguiera.

Dong Sik Yoon’s first four fights were against Kazushi Sakuraba, Makoto Takimoto, Rampage Jackson, and Murilo Bustamante.

Quickness, Head-Movement and Footwork.

Brock has all of these over Carwin in the striking game, and he gets better in these areas with every fight.

His quickness coupled with his reach was the beginning of the end for Randy.

Remember that first punch against Herring? I don’t think Carwin has the ability to hang with that quickness.

If Brock goes out there with a “stand and bang” mentality, Shane has a puncher’s chance.

I think Brock will keep his distance with his quick jab, avoid Carwin’s power, circle, and eventually land bombs.

What a Fashion Don’t! That’s like your dick wearing socks with sandals.

Look at TUF; these guys are as big as or bigger than Brock and don’t have shit. It’s not even worth arguing with these types that still recycle this tired argument that Brock is somehow a cheat because he’s big and strong.

by Blackout612 on Oct 12, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t consider Brock a cheat, I just think that he’s overcome serious skill deficits in fights with just his size. So when you put him up against a guy who’s the same size as him, it nullifies a lot of his advantage. Seems a lot of people here think Brock has some great technique going…I suppose we’ll see in Nov.

“Matt Hughes was a big fight, you know? It was a huge name, a guy that had won the old tournaments in the beginning.” – Hughes

“Those are the kinds of fights that gets me into the gym ready to train and work.” – Hughes.

Hughes is the Franklin of the WW Division, he exausted that fight and now has nothing to climb towards in frankly the only division he is built for.

Now what does he do? Hope GSP dies.
