Donald Cerrone says Ben Henderson clearly won the fight:
"I think [Henderson] won the fight. Some people will say it might have gone the other way, but he definitely won the fight."
"I'm obviously disappointed in myself," Cerrone said. "I didn't go out there and show what I had the first couple of rounds.
"I asked my coach, 'What round are we in?' He said, 'Fourth.' I said, 'Oh, [expletive], I better get going.'"

Poor Jordan Breen
This might make him have to change his anime panties, again.

Apparently Lorenzo doubled the FotN bonus.

What does Cerrone know?
Jordan Breen is much more knowledgeable about MMA.

It seemed to me like Henderson’s gameplan and tenacity put Cerrone in a position where he wasn’t able to do anything, not that Cerrone was asleep at the wheel. But props to him for acknowledging that he didn’t deserve the W. A lot of other fighters would do themselves a favor by picking up that attitude. You can’t learn anything from a fight by insisting that you won a fight when your record says otherwise.
I did pick Henderson to win, but I’m not ashamed to admit my unabashed Henderson fandom probably skewed my view of the fight. I saw him fight live in his WEC debut and was blown away by his athleticism and explosiveness. I was honestly surprised to see him move up the ladder so quickly, but I’m excited about the possibility of seeing him take out Varner in the next couple months. After a few more fights in the WEC I’d love to see him in the UFC. He isn’t ready yet, but with time he’s a great candidate for the UFC LW division.

Yeah I've rolled with Henderson....
So as soon as people started sleeping on him in this fight I had to pick him to win. His ground game is nasty. Did anybody catch the part where they said he is 7-0 against black belts in grappling competition? Im suprised hes still a purple belt to be honest.

the betting odds on Ben Henderson were 100% incredible. By the time the line closed he was at a +680. I threw a couple of bucks down and ended up pretty pumped.
Ben did win the fight, glad Cowboy came out and said that. This is what happens when you are a slow starter like Cowboy.

The 7-0 thing threw me too. Beating a black belt or two is one thing, but 7? The only thing I came up with is that he may have won on points each time by using his wrestling to dominate position and avoid submissions. If that’s the case I can understand not moving him up a belt or two since BJJ is more than positions. Also, while he did withstand Cerrone’s submission attempts, he did get caught in them in the first place.

I thought cowboy won…. watched the fight after I read all the articles and went in thinking ’there’s no way this will be controversial’ but in the end I thought cerrone did much more damage

i know, but they should be. here: “but in the end i thought cerrone did much more damage to win the fight”

What did Cerrone do? A couple of failed submission attempts? They were good attempts but they were still failures, fights are judged on overall aspects throughout the fight not just one or two potential finishes.
by who me on Oct 12, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i know how fights are judged, and it’s not overall aspects…. it’s round by round, but i’m sure you know that right? i thought he was more aggressive and think his sub attempts were more significant than benson’s takedowns but i have a feeling you really didn’t want to know what i thought he did.
by cagefightonacid on Oct 12, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ask any pro BJJ guy....puting a subb is easier then getting out from one.
by 1WAYtiket on Oct 12, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that’s subjective. i’m not and never will be a pro but i do roll, take lessons and practice bjj, and in my opinion it depends on too many conditions to lay out a statement like “pulling off subs are easier than escaping one”
by cagefightonacid on Oct 14, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes it’s round by round, the overall aspects part is that they judge according to everything that happens in the fight not just certain specific things, heck guys that are aggressive and going forward tend to score better than guys who are backpedaling and counter-punching because aggression and ring control are two aspects of the scoring. Sub attempts are just another thing that happens in the fight and they are scored accordingly no t to mention that all judges scoring is 100% subjective according to what the judge sees and thinks about the action, that’s is why they have three judges out there(all three judges in this fight scored it the same). Cerrone’s sub attempts were very impressive but honestly there were only two rounds were he got those good sub attempts off and it’s not like Henderson was doing nothing in there, it was a very close fight.
I don’t know where they attitude is coming from here, yes I wanted to know what you were thinking he did, why else would I want to talk to people on the internet about MMA unless I was wanting to talk to people on the internet about MMA. Lets face facts what either of us think doesn’t matter at all to the sport, our opinions are irrelevant we are only here discussing this for our personal education and entertainment.
by who me on Oct 12, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
didn't mean to throw any attitude, sorry.
and i agree, what we say and think doesn’t matter…. it was a close fight that could have gone either way. i’d rather a draw but IF there had to be a winner, i thought it was cerrone. again, sorry about the misunderstanding.

Cerrone's comment highlights a disturbing trend
He asked his coach, Greg Jackson, what round it was and upon hearing it was the 4th, he said “Oh shit, better get going.”
My question to ‘Cowboy’ is… if you ‘better get going’ now, then what were you doing for last last 3 rounds? Cruising? If so, then why try to cruise when you are losing the fight? Were you planning on going the distance with no intentions to finish? It seems to me that this is the case.
I realize a fighter can’t ‘blow his load’ early in a 5 round fight, but Cerrone’s comment clearly indicates that he wasn’t giving it his all until the later rounds… something that was evident if you watched the difference between the first 3 and the last 2 rounds. I don’t see why a fighter would try to ‘cruise’ through a fight that he knew he was losing.
by TDITZ on Oct 11, 2009 2:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think you’re reading into it too much. Realizing it was the fourth round and he was losing probably just gave him a greater sense of urgency, and maybe a little boost of adrenaline. Doesn’t mean he was cruising. I personally chalked up the difference in the last 2 rounds to Henderson slowing down as much or more than Cerrone speeding up.

Yeah, Mir & Douchie were blathering about how fresh Ben looked while he was taking forever to get up and flopping on his back at every opportunity; Henderson was pretty close to gassed in the 4th.

Speaking of Mir
I heard he was VERY unhappy with the scoring of the fight as well. He actually had it 49-46 for Miguel Torres.

Throw out the timed rounds and Cerrone wins this fight.
Old school UFC rules in place and I see Cerrone winning this fight and the Varner fight. Ofcourse it is irrelevant and one can come up with all kinds of scenarios in which Henderson and Varner could have done things to win under old school rules but Cerrone never seems to get tired and the only thing that seems to stop him is the end of the fight.

Well, if we're going old school....
lose the gloves and fight bare-knuckles!
It’s 2009, dude. MMA has used timed rounds for a while now.

Just saying, I didn’t have the live commentary to sway my view of the fight or anything. Of course Cerrone sais Henderson beat him, he’s a class act. I dunno, I just thought Cerrone won. As in, it is my opinion. I love how people can come out and be complete smartasses because theyre behind the keyboard. Chill out.

Well shit, if people were booing then he MUST have won. I can’t believe that people in Texas would be rooting for the guy named Cowboy as opposed to the foreign looking guy, how odd.

How about calling it a draw?
scoring live i had it 48-48, I remember someone in the live comments thread pleading to the BE writers to do a feature on why draws should be called more often. This is an interesting fight to focus on for a piece like that.

BTW,
I had pretty damn good seats. There was this fine little blonde that came and sat down by us before the Eddie Winland fight. She kept yelling “c’mon Eddie” during his fight. I tell my boys this chick must be banging Wineland. Sure enough after his fight Wineland shows up in some torn up jeans, flipflops and with a beer in his hands and sits right next to us. lololol Dude had a huge scratch on the back of his right cauli ear. Crazy stuff.

I’m really disapointed in Cowboy it seems like he honestly doesn’t give a fuck, he should have been all business after his loss to Varner. But instead he looked sloppy and unprepared he’s starting to go the way of Karo a guy who relies on his natural talent and isn’t putting in the hard work that he should in the gym. I hope Greg Jackson gives him a nice kick in the ass for the next fight because, the guy has all the tools to be an elite fighter but he has to want stop bs’ing around for that to happen.
